Brad Meltzer is an acclaimed novelist, Green Arrow writer, and writer of the upcoming Identity Crisis story arc!
--------------------------------------
LoG: How did the idea for Identity Crisis come about? Did DC approach you, or was it the other way around?
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] They actually approached me about it. I had just finished work Green Arrow, and [DC Comics] knew i wanted to do a JLA arc sometime in my life...I just didn't ever have time. As crass as it sounds they wanted to kill off a character and came to me thinking I'd be the best person to do it. I thought 'I don't care about killing that character doesn't make sense.' The last thing I want to do is kill a character for no good reason to sell some books...As a reader I despise that and don't want to be a part of that as a writer'
So, I spent a month thinking about it trying to develop a reason WHY
the why it hit me a couple week s after that. I pitched them the entire storyline of Identy Crisis I finally had what made me care about the events
--------------------------------------
LoG: How significant will the impact of Identity Crisis really be on the DC Universe? Is it overhyped?
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] We're clearly overhyped right now. We cant win! It'll be judged by the quality of the story and the art as any story should be. 7 months down the road we might look back and love it, or we may think its total crap.
In terms of impact its different than the Crisis, Where it was truly a continuity change this is not that. its not oh my gosh hypertime is suddently not real or anything like that
you'll see old stories in a new light its a diffetrent take on the dc universe there are things that are just going to change
You'll see a total shift in some of DC's books . Traditionally in DC, the villians is supposed to be afraid of the hero...the readers will now discover why its the villians we should be fearing.
--------------------------------------
LoG: Do you consider yourself a comic fan? Are there any titles you personally read on a regular basis?
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] Am I a comic fan?! If anyone wants to play comic book trivia lets dance! ......did I just say lets dance?
LoG: Yes. Yes you did....
[ackward silence]
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] [laughs] I'm a HUGE comics fan. I read DC and Marvel: JLA, X-Men, Daredevil, JSA, Titans....
--------------------------------------
LoG: How do you view writing for comics, as opposed to working on novels? Does it present more or less of a challenge?
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] Its really just painting with a different palet. In a novel all the words i use are the ones i'll paint the picture with.... In comics I get to use the art in place of so many descriptive words.
I can tell the artist 'close-up on bead of sweat on characters forehead', and he can portray it visually.
--------------------------------------
LoG: Can we expect any more DC related work from you in the near future?
[glow=red,2,300]Brad Meltzer:[/glow] I'm currently developing a tv show for the WB called Jack and Bobby. You never know what DC projects may come in the future.
