He's might be getting a spinoff show from Smallville. And they said DC Comics have asked the JLU producers not to use him or his franchise...Here's the article... www.nypost.com/entertainment/30990.htm"The WB Network and the producers of "Smallville" are said to be holding preliminary talks about the possibility of a spin-off featuring the scaly undersea king, sources said yesterday. Although the show is in its earliest stages, the project got a boost last month when the ratings weren't all wet for an episode of "Smallville," in which a college-age Aquaman paid a visit to Clark Kent. On the teen Superman series, the dorky man-fish was a marine biology student and environmental activist from the University of Miami (played by "American Idol" reject Alan Ritchson), who traveled to Kansas to deal with Lex Luthor, who was testing a new sonar weapon in a lake near Smallville. It was not clear yesterday if Ritchson would be asked to reprise the role. For a long time, Aquaman as a superhero has been seen as kind of a joke among Hollywood insiders and many comic fanatics. But recently, there's been a strange level of buzz surrounding the character — especially last summer when he became the focal point of this season's edition of HBO's comedy "Entourage." Even more telling was the recent revelation that DC Comics — the comic book publisher that holds the Aquaman license — had asked the producers of the animated Cartoon Network show "Justice League Unlimited" not to use the character or any of his related properties in their show. It is understood that Aquaman and characters related to the franchise have been licensed for use exclusively by "Smallville" producers. Officials at The WB and "Smallville" producers declined to comment yesterday."

Yup, Aquaman and his "aqua-family" have been "baned" for a few months now and for the foreseeable future. That is why he was written out of the last episode ("To Another Shore") at the last minute and why Black Manta was re-designed and re-named "Devil Ray" in the same Ep.
It is also reported that should an Aquaman show materialize, its 90% likely the starring role will be recast.
Personally, I think the character embargo's for JLU are all but entirely ridiculous and although I'm open to the idea, I really dont care If Aquaman gets his own show or not. However; I would agree with recasting the star. That particular Smallville episode was "ok" at best and only because of it's novelty.
I dont really expect Aquaman to happen, and would be even more surprised if it were to be a success.?

Aquaman for a long time has struck me as a very weak character whose mere existence strains credulity.
I'm sorry, I just don't see too many compelling storylines involving a guy who swims really, really well.
I can't believe he's been around as long as he has.

Hey, it might be a possibility for a spin-off. I mean, they did a pretty good job of portraying him in "Smallville" and Justice League series. The only thing that will determain the show's success will be whether the spin-off will have a good storyline and great acting.

I know I wouldn't watch Aquaman, I HATE the character I have never been a fan, and I think he is more of a joke than anything. I think if WB were smart they would have gone with the Flash spin off show, when Bart appeared last season on SMALLVILLE, I think he had more buzz...
Maybe with Aquaman getting cut out of shows on JLU and stuff perhaps they are going to can Aquaman all together, my fingers are crossed GET RID OF AQUAMAN!

I think it is a shame that Aquaman is off JLU. I have always liked that when they had a "water problem", they had a guy that they could turn to. Plus it gives a "then and now" of times changing from Superfriends to Justice League. I can't picture Aquaman as having a very successful "solo" career, but I could be wrong. From what I have read, he really didn't have that good of a solo comic book either.

The Smallville episode with Aquaman in was enjoyable, but the character was pretty weak. And the special effects were no good either, like that bubble punch he hit clark with. Aquaman is actually cool in JL, and they should just leave him there.

Well I like and enjoy Aquaman to a degree and he certainly has his "place" in DC. He's just someone who works best in smaller doses and when fitting. His direction and appearances on JLU are the best examples of good usage of the character and he came off just right IMO. Ocational guest appearances and team ups in the books and on the toon are where he shines brightest.

I just think its stupid that it has to be handled this way. Why does Aquaman have to be on only one show? Why cant the Joker and the other Bat-Villains be used on JLU and The Batman? Does Warner Bros. really think we're that stupid that we cant tell one show from another? WB/DC owns these characters, its not like they are leasing them out to another company/show. This just seems like an unnecessary self-imposed rule.

Newsarama had it this morning that an Aquaman pilot has gotten the OK. They linked to a Hollywood Reporter article posted today.

Yeah the "green light" is being anounced all over the place. I think its ultimately a bad idea. I mean, seriously, does anybody actually believe this could be a break out smash hit!? or maintain an audience and go on for multiple seasons? I like the character and of course I like the idea of DC properties getting the live action treatment but this shouldnt and doubtfully will go farther than the pilot.

I agree, Batlaw. Especially when there are so many better DC characters to be had.
This goes back to my original head-scratcher about Aquaman: How has he managed to stick around this long? And why do TV execs historically think he's special (1960s cartoon, SuperFriends, etc.)?

[shadow=purple,left,300]No. I think WB will be taking a huge risk by producing the pilot. I honestly think it's a waste of their time; I doubt it will get picked up for a full season.
Aquaman off JLU? Well, I'm not sure how I feel. I did like the few episodes I saw him in; Otherwise, I didn't really notice his presence.
One thing that I am wondering, though, is why hasn't there been a cutback in Superman-centric stories/ characters? Isn't "Superman Returns" coming out next year? I could have sworn that would have bigger grounds for embargo than some unlikely-to-succeed "Aquaman" soap.
But what do I know.[/shadow]

I don't know about y'all, but I'm not a big of a Comic Geek, so i'm going to give the Aquaman series a chance, just like any other DC based television shows. If this series is to be a big flunk or not, at least DC is beating Marvel in the race of TV Media.

Have no fear, I'm sure the Super-embargo will be in full force before we know it! As I'm sure so will the Flash, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl and probably every other character to have ever appeared... hell, I'm sure somwhere some studio exec's personal assistant had a bowel movement that resembled Elongated Man so he'll be off limits too!?

I'm not very fluent in Aquaman lore, but I did watch Superfriends reruns when I was younger and ever since seeing Aquaman on that show he's been one of my favorite characters. And I've missed every single JLU episode this season (yeah, I don't no how I did that either) but was extremely happy when I saw Black Manta, excuse me, "Devil Ray" in some screen grabs and heard about his appearance. I was hoping that the reason Bruce Timm and the other JLU workers were doing that because they were going to bring Aquaman more into the fold. But noooo. Blagh, you know what WB, you guys really aren't fair. You allow Lex Luthor, Clark Kent/Superman, and Lois Lane to appear on Smallville and JLU, but Aquaman or the Bat-villains can't appear on two shows? You could get a big cross marketing thing going on people! I'm sorry, I just really think this whole "characters can only appear on one show" thing is really dumb.

I actually thought the JL and JLU Aquaman was pretty interesting, even though I don't like the character in anything else. However, I think an Aquaman live-action tv show will be dumb as hell, so I, too, wish they would've kept him on JLU, where he's actually interesting for once(IMO).

It is a shame that Smallville can't have anime characters guest star. Then there would be numerous time slots open for superheroes .

I would be surprised if this amounts to anything real. Aquaman has never been close to many people's hearts. Let me put it this way, there is no Legions of Atlantis. Aquaman hasn't had its own cartoon or movie. I think that if this live action thing goes through, it will be at one end or the other. It will either be taken up as bringing new life to the character, or it will be another failed attempt at making Aquaman a serious superhero.

Aquaman actually did have his own cartoons back in the 70's. I think it was filmations. They were shown in half hour blocks along with cartoons of Superman/Superboy & Batman cartoons. Half the time slot would be an Aquaman cartoon and the other half was one of the other 3. PJ
