REVIEW: With five more episodes to go to finish off JLU to its end, we're given a continuation to the main Legion arc and also a another direct sequel. This time, not the Cadmus arc of the past two seasons, but to a previous episode of the series: "The Cat and the Canary".
First off; before we continue, we're given a cameo to someone who hasn't been seen in a long while. He appears in the sequence of Huntress on her bike, on top of a building with Gargoyles, in his city that I believe wasn't mentioned by name in any of the shows 'til now. Who is this? Well here's the name of the city he's in...
.
SPOILER!!!!
..
This will cause great Geek moments. BE WARNED!
...
Bludhaven (Oh yeah, HIM!)
..
.
Back to the story. Roulette brings back the Brawl that Black Canary destroyed in "Cat and the Canary", only this time its women only in the arena. Oh yes, you guys must be excited.....twice. With the help of Lex Luthor, they don't recruit the female villians, but female heroes from the League
Huntress returns, along witha small appearence of The Question. This time, we don't just see Huntress, but Helena as well as a disguise. Fire also returns fighting Black Canary. Then Huntress and Black Canary fight alongside each other, by force, against Vixen and Shayera. Who would then go and fight each other. Then, well....the four fight...well I have to keep some secrets.
Place your bets!
For this episode, it was good. I don't know if it was the girls fighting (hey, we're men), not an entire break from the Legion arc but still something away from the main plotline of things. I don't know, could be Huntress.
Animation and sound was good. Theres nothing really to say expect it was good to watch.
In case anyone says anything, no I did not spoil anything.
Overall, a fun episode. To which of the sexes best fits as the main audience for this episode? Don't ask me.
RATING: 8/10

This episode ROCKED! imo. Like the majority of this season it essentially comes accross as another "filler" or stand alone episode... but in a good way IMO lol. Like Ive said, every episode so far seems to share a running thread of little gifts of fan-candy. Grudge match is no dif. The plot is razor thin and pretty improbable really, but it simply doesnt matter because the emphasis is once again on FUN and the action and interaction just too cool!
My only complaint is Amy Acker's (Sp?) / Huntress' voice. For some reason the voice just didnt fit the character this time. Far more "youthful" and "girly-girl" than before imo. just threw me off. Much like Red Toprnado's voice in "Brain Robery"... very distracting.
This time out we're treated to several geek-tastic moments....
SPOILERS!..............................................................................................................................................................
1st and foremost... Nightwing! even if barely and only "assumed".. there is no denying this one was "for us".
Along with Nightwing we get Bludhaven! Nice to have confirmation of the city in the DCAU.
Huntress!... and Huntress Vs. Black Canary! Both really get some needed spotlight and fully kick butt! as well as Fire!
Question and he and Huntress' relationship.
Catman!
Vixen Vs. Hawkgirl! and some very creative and cool usages of Vixen's powers.
No one should ever again complain that Wonder Woman hasnt been fully shown as the power house she really is! In this ep there is no denying in the dcau she is on near the same leval as Superman and Everyone in the dcau knows it!

Batlaw, about those voices... I suspect the reason they're sounding different to you is because these episodes were aired (and recorded) in England using the PAL standard. PAL runs ever so slightly faster than NTSC here in the states, so voices one is used to hearing will sound slightly higher. I've noticed it on all the established characters so far.
I recall being in London a few years ago, and I happen to turn on the "telly" in my hotel room to catch Batman Beyond. I immediately picked up on the fact that old Bruce sounded a bit younger and faster than usual.
C.
P.S. This is the second mention of Bludhaven in the DCAU that I can recall. Old Bruce mentions it in Batman Beyond at least once. Can't recall what episode or why, though.

Thanks for the info Cas! that may very well be the case? and I'm inclinded to take your word for it given your (and most all other's) obviously superior technical knowhow Allthough I have to wonder why it would seem to only effect one or two voices? In regards to Bludhaven being mentioned in Batman Beyond... are you sure? Cant believe I havnt seen or heard of that nugget before now if not known of it myself? I would love to find out for sure. the most Ive ever found "officially", is a reference to Dick Grayson having moved to "another city"?. either way, its all cool... p.s... please tell me youre not gonna keep using the term "telly" ?

Was Nightwing's costume the same as in the Batman series or closer to the comic version?

Unfortunately not even enough detail to wager a guess Blocko. I assume the original TNBA under the circumstances since they only pulled off enough for the longtime familiar fans to make the connection and or distinction. Honestly, blink and youll miss it. if this wasnt entirely snuck passed the legal dept. it was only allowed because technically it could be "anybody in a mask". to make a long story short, its just a silhoutte in shadow lol

I wonder if we could get some screen grabs of Nightwing. For all we know, they could have used TT Nightwing. Not that I've seen this episode.

given that speedy appeared in "Patriot act", its certainly possible it couldve been that or "their" version? and I considered that too, but there simply is no way to say for sure. There were screen grabs posted somewhere. ill have to see if I can find them.

Ta Dah! Theyve been posted over at TitansTower.com! just scroll down. www.titanstower.com/source/animated/00indexanimated.htmlLike I said, blink and youll miss it. allthough this is pretty much as good as it gets, the final fame that doesnt appear shown here, is a slightly dif angle that highlights enough detail on the mask line and hair Etc. to make the identity known to any long time fan under the circumstances, I'm thoroughly greatful for getting this much! Thanks team!

Great! After looking at both sites, I say that it was TNBA Nightwing. The picture was just a tad clearer on ThatBlockoGuy's site. I saw the infamous mullet.

I guess since we're (or at least me) letting everything outa the bag, you can see speedy's JLU images on that above Titans link as well a little farther down. As for his relationship to GA... Ollie reffers to him as "my former sidekcik". To which Speedy replies "you mean former Partner"!. great stuff lol

BL, I'm positive Old Bruce mentions Bludhaven in a Batman Beyond episode. It stuck in my mind because it was such a DC Fanboy reference. But it didn't stick enough that I could tell you which episode. It's a throwaway line. Bruce is describing a villain's activities from his usual post at the Batcomputer.

I haven't been following TT for a while, so if this debate has already been resolved please let me know. Seeing as how the Speedy in JLU is the older version of the one on Titans and seeing Nightwing on JLU can we now conclude that the Robin on Titans is Dick Grayson...just a thought and that Teen Titans takes place several years before JLU, and probably before the 1st Batman animated series especially since TT Robin's costume does resemble the one Grayson wears in the 1st Batman series.

Hey Blocko, just for the record, the TT Robin is indeed Dick, as his name appears on screen (albeit backwards) when "Larry" appears as his biggest fan.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion, already in progress.

An ongoing debate that has, and now likely wont ever be given an official answer? But it has been made reletively "clear" that it's Dick Grayson. IMO for the longest time (and still) I personally see the TT Robin as Tim Drake, just the impression Ive always gotten, but what bits n' pieces of an "origin" theyve given us all point to it being Dick. The only official comments Ive ever come accross from staff is that... (paraphrasing) "not gonna say. its up to you to decide, but we've dropped enough hints over time that it should be obvious to everyone who it is"... each and every "hint" or tip of the hat I and every viewer has seen, eludes to DTT Robin being Dick Grayson. As for TT's place in continuity, going off what we know and assuming TT does belong and Grayson is TT Robin... the best we can logically place it is sometime between Dick Grayson/Robin's first appearance on BTAS and his first appearance / transformation to Nightwing? or Tech through the end of TNBA. We can also safely assume that at least some formation of the Titans team existed into the TNBA and by all likelyhood and appearances Tim Drake/Robin was a member at that time. Based on everything that can be "nailed down", I place Teen Titans on the timeline in that grey area between the begining of BTAS and it's transition to TNBA... but most likely best fits in the very early days of BTAS before we the viewers really got a good look at Robin.

Personally, I like to think of the two shows as totally unrelated. My brain just can't make the visual styles work together! But, if I had to point to one thing that said they were in the same universe and when, it would be the "origin" epsiode of TT that aired a few weeks ago. In the opening moments, Robin runs down a thug in an alley. The thug says something to the effect of "You're not supposed to be here/in this town/somethinglikethat." And Robin replies something to the effect of "I just moved here." And then "I work alone now." (Sorry I don't have full quotes at hand.)
I had just watched "Old Wounds," so it was fresh in my mind. In it, Nightwing says he "never wore that costume again." So, in my mind, it's possible Dick left Gotham for Jump City and wore an altered costume for awhile, before going around the world and back to Gotham again.
Hey, I didn't say it was a good theory, or that I even choose to accept it!

LOL hey it works for me Cas! Unfortunately, I ended up missing most the final episodes of TT : ( Ive also missed some of the more Robin/Bat-Easter egg episodes : ( but seen enough and learned enough to know whats happened Etc.
Personally, I have no trouble accepting TT into the bigger and more familiar DCAU picture myself.

I thought this episode was alright. Probably the weakest episode of this season so far. I thought it was real funny when Huntress asked Question what he was wearing. And the 32nd flavor was classic for him. I wish Bludhaven would have been highlighted a bit more. I thought the end was lame between Huntress and Black Canary. I thought it was incredible how WW was about to crack some skulls. Loved that part. This is yet another episode that highlights how powerful the original league is. I thought it was funny how Fire had wisps of fire in convenient places. It was great to see Nightwing, but I want more, much more.

I loved it! sure the storyline was improbable and full of holes, but like this entire season, its not about the tales but about the oportunities.
I particularly enjoyed the "Mortal Kombat" music!

I must have missed the Mortal Kombat music. I can't listen to the music the first time I see a show or a movie. I just get too caught up in the story. Anybody notice how mature JLU has gotten in this final season. They've had numerous inuendos and Devil Ray was killed. I say they go to every WB owned channel and try to get them to keep this show on.
