So far, Penguin is no different than in Batman Returns. I just dont like "ozzie" being hip.

[shadow=red,left,300]Excellent episode! Loved it from start to finish! I'll go so far to say that this is the best interpretation of The Penguin ever. Sure he has some similarites to the Batman Returns Penguin (the flippers for hands, the manner which he carries himself), but that's cool with me as I enjoyed that take on the character. Thankfully Matsuda has built on that and made Penguin an actual force to be reckoned with, with surprisingly good fighting skills and a whole slew of cool trick umbrellas. He actually stomped a mudhole in ol' Bats for a bit. His entourage, The Kabuki Twins, wow. Now these are henchmen (or in this case henchwomen). I like how they mysteriously disapeared during Penguin's/Batman's fight. Hope to see more of them! It was great to see Batman doing some detective work in this episode, as well as Alfred doing a bit himself. Nice touch that his grandfather used to work for the Cobblepots, puts a nice spin on things. The ending between Ethan and Bruce was good, especially Bruce's line about he hopes it isn't the Batman that brings these villains out of the woodwork. I love the series so far, next Saturday can't get here fast enough! [/shadow]

[shadow=purple,left,300]This episode was pretty good. My audio was a tad bit shot, which made it highly annoying, but I tried my best to oversea it. My only complaint is Penguin's voice. For being such a talented voice artist, I thought Tom Kenny would be able to pull off a more Burgess Meredith sound instead of the scratchy one he produced. Also, Penguin doesn't and shouldn't eat pizza. It's just very odd.
But the story was good, and the animation was better than the pilot. I thought the action scenes were especially great. It's kind of nice to see a more nimble Penguin. I give it a 9 out of 10. [/shadow]

Not bad, but the entire "hipper than thou" routine that the show's taking is going to wear thin quickly.
BTW, is every one of Batman's villains that doesn't have a super power going to be a martial artist, or is he going to be able to fight someone that's just plain out psychotically demented and dangerous?

[shadow=red,left,300]Episode was pretty good. Still trying to get used to Jackie Chan artwork. Penguin laugh was annoying slightly but overall an acceptable portayal of the Penguin. Kabuki chicks were cool.[/color][/shadow]

So far, Penguin is no different than in Batman Returns. I just dont like "ozzie" being hip. i agree, he was "Returns" in nature. but all in all it wasn't a bad representation. my favorite is till the TNBA version. that was the closest to the current comic adaption. it put's him a little more closer to high society.

WoW.........im speechless.
This was a great improvement over last weeks episode. There was no feeling of being rushed. The new characters had more background information.
And the penguin, what can I say, he was a great character.
And this time, some jokes actuallly made me laugh. Especially when detective Ethan said that a seagull once took his sandwhich.
The animation was once again like last week flawless.
Ok, now onto the plot.
It was a great plot. The penguin as an ex billionaire trying to regain his fortune was well thought out. I like the idea tha alfred actuallly did some more exploring and not just serve Bruce. The penguin was funnier on occasions because of his big appetite, his use of words and the actions he uses. One thing I really liked in this episode is how they explain so much things. When the penguin was kicking the batman like he was in some kind of kung fu movie, i was like Wtf?? Penguin doesnt kick like that. Untilll he explained shortly after that he learned it while in the orient. So then it made sense to me. And it wasnt so bad that he learned something and aplied it on something.
This episode showed more of batmans gadgets, this week was the bat glider which was truly fun to watch him fly. Now the penguins gadgets, his umbrellas. What can I say. Im glad they stuck with the true character and gave him umbrellas. But there was the chain umbrella that made me say wow how creative.
Ok, im tired of talking now and those are my opinions.

OMG! The Ozmeister is in the house[ I didn't really like that(Penguin being hip)...but I did love the way he could fight. I did enjoy the episode. But of course after seeing a second episode I have to say the same thing I did with B:TAS...Why can't we get a Batman figure in his correct costume. Again Batman's costume is blue & gray not black & gray. Just once I'd like to get an accurate costume. Still I did enjoy the cartoon. PJ

I thought the episode was great, I liked how Batman used his detective skills in this episode, and I liked how the Peinguin was portrayed like a little Returns voice and look, the only thing I did not like, was when the birds wanted to eat Alfred, I mean I think that was pretty stupid. But that will not stop me from liking this episode, and I give it a 9/10.

Woo-hoo! There really wasn't a thing I didn't like about this episode. I happen to really like the Returns Penguin, so that wasn't a problem for me. 10/10! Can't wait to see Traction. If this was so good, I can't wait to see how that'll be. ;D

[shadow=blue,left,300]Wow! I thought last weeks episode was cool. This episode was great! Detective work! Last weeks (Bat in the Belfry) was good but rushed, mainly because I believe they were trying to introduce everyone and establish the story background.
This episode was wonderful. Penguin is great. Love the voice. And I love the subplot of Cobblepots vs. Pennyworths. Alfred was cool again. "Jeeves" (LOL) is fastly becoming one of my favorite characters in the toon.
The Kabuki twins were cool and very dark and mysterious.
Bring on next week..[/shadow]

I really enjoyed this one. If they keep getting better at this rate, even the naysayers will have to change their opinion! I loved the blue highlights to the cape and cowl. My fav scene was when Batman was standing on the tree branch (above the Penguin) with his cape surrounding him. Classic Batman scene. I loved it! [glow=red,2,300](Matt if you could get me a screen grab of that scene.... ;D ) [/glow] Got it! Penguin was great! I loved the fact that we saw some background on him. Him having some fighting skills was a nice addition. I've always thought the Penguin was one of the weakest Bat villains out there. This took him up a notch in my book and made him a little more dangerous. The umbrella weapons were spot on. Couldn't have been better! The whole Jeeves thing was excellent. Seeing Alfred doing some detective work is a nice touch to bring some of the old comics into the show. Overall this was a great episode for both me and the kids. I think WB and Co have a potential hit on their hands if they keep this up!

Let me say while I was never a big fan of the Penguin this episode put a little twist on what I remember seeing in the Animated Series. He looks a bit like a monster with the sharp teeth and flipper hands which is a good thing. But as someone pointed out earlier, are we going to see just some plain psychos? Ones without martial art abilities. I liked his henchwomen with the long claws. I can't wait to see next week's episode.
All in all a 4 out of 5.

Positives of this Episode: HUGE improvement over last week. Used a combination of Burton and Timm's Penguins Great voice acting on Tom Kenny's part (as well as Romano and Duncan) Alfred did stuff Penguin wasn't defenseless Batman's cape Batman WAS a detective Penguin's "speaking of abroad" line Kabuki Twins
Bad: Penguin's "Ozmiester" and "Ozzy" lines
That's all I can think of.

Well, the penguin didint do much martial arts except for when he attacked penguin and didi multiple kicks to his chest. Even then he said that he learned it from the orient. Other than that he was ussing his umbrellas and jumping from tree limb to limb.
Another thing i just rememebered was how batman realized that it was the penguin and they showed like a flashback at what the penguin did. I didint even know that he stole the guest list.

Wow!!! 1000 times better than last week. I loved the Penguin! They captured his cocky, conceded, perverted nature perfectly, and I loved his umbrellas. When he fought, he almost flew, which really made it seem like he was a bird. Batgadgets never cease to amaze me! BAT-GLIDER!!! and the ricochet batarangs! Incredible! Such a great episode. Everything was perfect...

This was a truly fantastic episode, and the crew deserves some serious praise for their take on Cobblepot. What a great amalgam of DeVito, Burgess Meredith, some of the classic comic book elements (the trained birds), and their own ideas, such as his motivations, the animosity between him and Alfred, and his martial arts.
When they called Penguin the anti-Bruce, they really weren't kidding. From the wealthy background, a Pennyworth once being a servant, him travelling abroad and then returning home to begin his life of crime as The Penguin--many similar elements to Bruce, which I found to be a great take.
The animation was truly superb, too. And the voice work was excellent from everyone, not a single weak link. Tom Kenny was great as The Penguin. I hope we see more of this version--and believe me, that is a huge compliment coming from me, as my favorite take before this version was DeVito's in Batman Returns.
I also loved Bruce's final line about Batman bringing out the freaks. It was great to see a younger Alfred do more than sit around the cave, and the detective angle, both he and Bruce, was well played. I knew we'd see Bruce's detective elements brought to the fore, but I didn't expect to see Alfred do his own investigating.
This episode easily gets an A+ from me.

I don't mind the martial arts thing at all. It just complements the villains' other attributes. They're still madmen, they just know how to fight. What's wrong with that? It just makes for some great fight scenes, along with the main attraction, insanity!

[shadow=green,left,300]I really enjoyed this episode...it was truly fantastic!
Firstly, this rendition resembled Returns Penguin no more than BTAS penguin...less so, IMO. I thought he was a great hybrid.
The voice acting by Tom Kenny was great. No issues there.
Do you really think that Penguin could run a swanky night club and be the epicenter for guns/food trafficing in Gotham without being a hipster? He's a criminal with a nightlife side...so the ozzmeister bit wasn't far off from how he'd be in my opinion. He's an butt....as he should be by his character definition!
Best line ever: "I've been traveling aboard...speaking of broad....." I literally doubled over in laughter. I'm still in pain!
It was great all in all. Great job Jeff and the rest of the team at WB animation! Very enjoyable
NOW....BRING ON BANE![/shadow]

Matt, I'm surprised you didn't see more of the Batman Returns attitude in there. I noticed it almost instantly with the voice work (an interesting combination of DeVito and Burgess, with some unique Kenny flourishes), and his attitude, in particular the line you cited--reminded me of when Penguin, in Batman Returns, would make lewd comments to that make-up artist and Catwoman. I honestly think this is a benefit, as Returns had a great version of the character.
However, they didn't take it that far, either. They kept his classic elements, such as the trained birds and thievery, things we saw in the 70's comics more than anywhere else, and that I've long missed in the character. And I definitely saw a bit of that old Burgess Meredith Penguin attitude as well, which was another benefit.
But the comparisons stop there, because this crew definitely made The Penguin their own. There is much originality to be had in their take, and they deserve major accolades for coming up with something new and interesting for this classic foe. The anti-Bruce angle will take them far, and should provide some very interesting stories to come.

[shadow=blue,left,300]Last week, a new legend was born. This week that legend became a god!!
JEFF MATSUDA IS THE ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS TO EVER HAPPEN TO BATMAN!!
This episode was absolutely incredible!! The improvement in the writing over last weeks show (which I loved) was amazing! In only the second show, I felt that tremendous strides were made toward making "The Batman" a long-running force in animated TV....not something I was expecting until mid-season at least!!
The voice acting also had much more flow to it than last week. I truly got the sense that all the actors were very comfortable in these legendary roles.
And of course the art!! I do not know what else I can say about Matsuda's style othar than I LOVE IT!! More than last week...more than yesterday...more than 30 seconds ago! The more I see it, the more I want to see!
The Penguin was very well done, IMO! The "Ozmeister" take was rather enjoyable and VERY FUNNY!! "...speaking of a broad...." LMAO!! A welcome fresh take on a beloved character! And the extra baddies were a nice touch!
Overall, I am very pleased with what I saw this week and am ever so excited for the next show! BRING ON BANE!! [/shadow]

The episode was actually pretty cool. A lot better than last week's. I liked it. Penguin was very amsuing. Bruce Wayne playing basketball was pretty odd though. I know Bruce is younger in this show, but I never picture the guy playing basketball and things like that. This is definitely a less dark and obsessed Bruce Wayne. PunkRockGirl
