Just to start the ball rolling on the BYOG Standard, I put together a couple of samples and a scene. My camera battery died before I got the details photographed. Keep checking this flickr set to get updates. I'll be posting more here about it. Basically: You're building Gotham store fronts. You can be as detailed or as bare inside the buidlings as you want to. This is the first level of the Gotham standard.. others will follow. Each storefront needs to sit on a baseplate that is a multiple of 8 studs. Any details that sticks out can only stick out the street side. The sides that will border other buildings needs to be flat. Corner storefronts (the red one in the pics) can have details that stick out towards the street. They have detail on 2 sides. It's a corner. The corner can be 8x8 8x16 8x24 16x16 16x24.. ect. You can build Banks, Jewelry Stores, Shops, Warehouses, Abandoned buildings, Hideouts, Police Stations, Firehouses, libraries, churches (lead lead)... etc. Yes, colors that are darker (drk grey, brown, black) communicate gotham better. I'll get more detailed info together soon... here's the photo set. YAY LEGO BATMAN! www.flickr.com/photos/fazoom/sets/72057594077835695/Build on! Join us for BrickSouth in April. Thanks for the helpful location pictures. You put everything together quite nicely, now you just need that moody atmosphere

For those of us that are fairly new to LEGO, where would you suggest we get parts for our Gotham sets?

Parts for Gotham sets aren't that hard to find. More muted building colors are found in many of the Harry Potter sets and some Star Wars sets. The line of Spiderman sets that is now phasing off of store shelves (NOT MEGABLOCKS... don't go there) has a buncha store front bricks and bits.
I've got more details to follow.... I'll get back to ya soon! The base plate (not the road plate) is easy to get. The base of the bat wing launch pad is a "multiple of 8" thick plate that's perfect for building Gotham Standard on.
