The Today Show: Coming up next, the original Batman and Catwoman are here along with the Batmobile.

~
The Today Show: In 1966, Americans tuned in twice a week to the same channel, at the same time, to watch the Dynamic Duo take a bite out of crime in Gotham City. It was such a hit, they made a movie. And joining us this morning… Well the movie by the way we should say, Batman The Movie, is being released in high definition on Blu-Ray disc and here to celebrate our TV’s original caped crusader, Adam West and the Catwoman herself. On the Today Show we should say, Adam West and Lee Meriwether. Adam, and Lee, so great to have you here!
Both Adam West and Lee Meriwether: Thank You!
The Today Show: So you guys, it’s been 42 years since the movie actually came out, it’s getting all of this new attention, since it’s coming out on Blu-Ray. How exciting is that for the two of you.
Lee Meriwether: It’s Thrilling!!
Adam West: I think it’s wonderful that a cold and personal corporate entity like Fox would do us the honor, the warmth, of releasing our humble Batman Movie!
TS: You’re the original though…
Adam: No, I think it’s great!
TS: I mean, and you still, I mean Batman and Catwoman, you still look amazing!
Lee: Thank you, thank you very much!
Adam: Thank you, that’s very nice of you!
TS: Meanwhile just to remind people and put it in perspective, the movie came out in 1966, it was in-between the first and second TV series seasons. Was it unusual at the time for it to come, for a movie to be made based on a TV series?
Lee: I think it was at that time… it certainly seemed…
Adam: Well what happened, they originally planned to do the movie before the series.
TS: Right…
Ohhhh…
Adam: But then they decided to do the series and do the movie at our first hiatus period, which was a lot of work!
TS: Yes!!
Adam: But it was a quick response…
Lee: Two day shooting schedule!
TS: And for you, you weren’t in the actual TV series, you landed this role in the movie.
Lee: No, I wasn’t [In the TV series]. Julie, Julie Newmar played the role originally, then she uh, she couldn’t do the film. I was lucky, I auditioned and got the part over hundreds of gals and uh…
TS: How do you think you got the part over the hundreds of gals and uh…
What did you do, what did you do?
Lee: Oh, I know, I, I uh, sat and uh, uh, curled up in a chair and licked my hand, and…
TS: As Catwoman shed.
Lee: Yup!
Adam: Yup, she was brilliant, you see, and she was tie-died you see
(Laughs)
Lee: And she was wearing the trends so well [Catwoman].
(Laughs)
Lee: This IS over 30 years old!!
TS: We have the Batmobile, the original one behind us, and this was really ahead of its time, it had a cell phone…
Lee: Yeah! Oh my goodness!
Adam: Yes, Yes!
TS: … it had a computer in there, Adam… so I mean you were pretty much, you started what we’re living with these days!
Adam: Isn’t that amazing that we were so far ahead of our time? I got three tickets coming over here!
(Laughs)
Adam: Crazy!
TS: Still with this technology… How many of these did they make, cause they had lots of different ones?
Adam: We had I believe six of them, we had back-up cars because I crashed ‘em a lot you know?!
Lee: And then there’s the Bat-Copter, and the Bat-Boat, and the Bat, uh… Motorcycle.
Adam: The Bat-Cycle.
Lee: Bat-Cycle.
TS: Bat-Motorcycle… Cycle… Right! I mean you had it all!
Lee: (Says something I can’t understand over the Today Show Hosts)
TS: That had, That had to have been a fun job, the perks of the job, right Adam? Getting to play with all of those Gadgets?
Adam: You’re right! I think my favorite gadget was the Bat-Boat.
TS: Yeah!
Adam: Because it really moved, and it was fun to get out in the ocean and run around a little!
TS: Lee, and w want to mention, you were a Today Show Alumnis. A lot of people maybe remember back in the 1950’s, when you were crowned Miss America. You were on the show for a long time. What was it like then?
Lee: ’55, yes. I was here for two months {or two years}. Oh my goodness, there are some pictures, oh pictures!
