What's with the Joker character wearing makeup in The Dark Knight? Don't these people know that he was dropped in a vat of acid that bleaced his skin white and hair green? You could even see the rest of his skin was not white. Well, at least it wasn't Jack Nicholson. I hate Jack Nicholson. I tried to sell my Batman DVD at a garage sale because it was with Jack Nicholson.

You do realize that this is a new and different interpretation of the Joker character? The vat of chemicals is only one possibility of what his origin could be. It also just happens to be the one that is the most popular and accepted. The reason you see his flesh is because it is explained that he wears the make up as "war paint".

This is a better Joker (Ledger that is.) It gives him an even more evil persona.

I hate Jack Nicholson. I tried to sell my Batman DVD at a garage sale because it was with Jack Nicholson. Sounds like average n00b behavior to me. Yeah, the makeup sucks anyways.

Yeah it was obviously supposed to be make-up... if it wasn't completely obvious by looking at his face then the scene with the attempted assassination of Jim Gordon made it completely clear when his was wearing no make-up at all and was obviously plain skinned.

The makeup is fine. The Joker's characteristics and behaviour remain the same. Ledger is a Joker for our times, realised in Nolan's realistic setting, and having the acid bleaching scenario would be pushing those boundaries.
The essential trademarks of The Joker are that he has a white face, red lips, green hair and purple clothing. It doesn't matter how he receives these things, what matters is that they are there. Ledger's Joker is fresh, while being absolutely faithful to the character.
