A friend texted me today saying did you hear that Johnny Depp is being rumored to be in the next Batman film to play The Riddler? I thought she was fooling around so when I got home I googled it and BAM tons of stories about it.
I think this is very exciting news, Johnny Depp is my all time favorite actor and will do an amazing job as The Riddler, or any other Batman villain they want to put in there.
What does everybody think???

Very interesting. I could actually very easily see him as a TB style Riddler, even though I hate that show and I hate the character design

Not in favour of Depp he's the option for every over the top character, since he played Jack Sparrow, which is a great role for the guy don't get me worng he's a great character actor but for the Riddler i don't know if he could pull that off.Maybe if he played the part more like a Dectective like the comic version is doing now then i'd be more in favour of Depp.

[shadow=green,left,300] I would like to see him go for it, it would be interesting... I want an interpretation that is actually a threat, who's traps could be as dark as John's from Saw. I am still undecided but we will see. [/shadow]

I wouldn't mind seeing him as the Riddler, but I don't think it will happen. IMO Nolan seems to avoid conventional casting. That is also why I don't think he will cast Jolie as Catwoman. I could be way off on this. That is just what I have noticed.

Depp? Conventional??? I think not. Have you seen his body of work?
As far as seeing him as "conventional" goes that's because of the success of PoC. By the way in the 1st PoC the producers were so worried about how Jack Sparrow would be recieved by the public because Depp chose to play the character very "un-conventional". His Pirate was so not what they wanted but Depp refused to play the part any other way. It's because of his uncompromised portrayal that the movie was such a huge success.
Now could he do the part and do it well? Yes. Will it be how they want it? Who knows?

Ok...
1. Are we sure were not confusing this with him being cast as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland ?
2. I could see Depp playing the Riddler. But to me he would have to rein in the goofyness, be more straightlaced. The Riddler is not a goofy person. Like I said, more straighlaced. But yeah, I could see the Riddler's death traps in Nolan's version being very Saw like. And that would be really cool.
3. I agree with SuperPa. He does seem to be the actor that always gets cast in the goofy, eccentric parts. And because of that i really don't want him as the Riddler. The Riddler is not eccentric. Even Gorshin, with the exception of that awesome laugh, wasn't eccentric.

as long as the its not the Batman forever version of the riddler. I dont like the idea of having "Saw" style traps,a bit to brutal I think. I have a vision of the Riddler turning into Jack Sparrow half way through the film.

I think Depp would be good as The Riddler as he is a left of centre actor and a very good actor at that.
It would be good to give the Riddler a lease of life although The Riddler was never a character I liked... would be interesting though.. maybe they could get Jim carey back ;D

I love Johnny Depp, he's my favourite actor... but as the Riddler I don't know. I could see him playing the Joker definitely, but I wouldn't really want anyone else taking over Heath Ledger's role... as for the Riddler, I don't find him an interesting enough character and I can't see how they'd fit the character into Nolan's Batman Universe without him looking too much like a Joker wannabe.. Jim Carrey's Riddler seemed to "Jokerish" in Batman Forever.

This is just rubbish and rumor. NOTHING has been talked about yet at the studio. Its highly unlikely Nolan would want to use Johnny, just due to his past record of using lesser known actors.

I don't know. I can see him probably doing it, but I just have a feeling people would only see it because it has Johnny Depp. So probably not. Besides, I think Johnny Depp would be a better Joker if they recasted.

Another problem i'd have with is,That Riddler would be looked apon as just another Depp character and not stand out on his own like Heath's Joker.

No, no no! If anything recast him as the Joker but I don't see him as the Riddler. I will say it again like I have on other posts, I really don't want the Riddler in the next movie, but I really don't see Depp as the Riddler.

Depp has the ability to pull off the Joker and bring both the spirit of the character and Ledger to the role. I really don't see him as the Riddler, and I really can't see any other actor cast as the Joker that wouldn't go off into left field.

[shadow=red,left,300]Personally, Hedth Ledger did such a great job, I don't really want them to recast.
To me, I can not see Johnny Depp taking the role. He is working on several upcoming projects. And to me, Depp has already played the nut job several times. It needs to be unique![/shadow]

If anyone has the chops to take on a role like this, it's him. Anyone see "Sweeney Todd"? It won't be a Ledger imitation, to be sure, but it will be no less demented.

I could see Johnny Depp taking on the role of any villian in the Batman franchise and doing it justice and being just brilliant at it.
It would be very interesting to see him take on the role of the Riddler, for me The Riddler isn't one of my favorite villians, but with the way Robert Englund voiced him in The Batman, and "If" Depp was to play Edward Nygma, man I know I wouldnt want to miss it.
I could totally see Depp taking on the role of The Joker, if they were going to use The Joker again for the third film and I would be alright with that. When watching The Dark Knight I completely forgot that Heath Ledger was playing The Joker because all I saw was The Joker on screen, that is how brilliant Heath played the role.
I heard them talking about Depp as The Riddler some more today on some local radio stations entertainment reports

personally i dont care for him and hes tim burtans hand puppet but that aside i think he would be amazing for a role of the mad hatter and not the riddler because there are way better choices for the riddler buscemi my choice and others but he could use a similiar stlye as his portrayal of willy wonka and that would be great but idk if the mad hatter will be in batman 3 comments

It would make it easier for everyone else to read. As far as your idea, I could see him playing the Mad Hatter. His Willy Wonka did a sort of similarity to the character. I doubt Depp will be in the series at all though. He is too mainstream for Nolan. Like I'm pretty confident that Nolan isn't going to be casting Brad Pitt anytime soon. That isn't his style. I'd really like to see Martin Short as Mad Hatter. It is what he was born to do.

I think Depp could play the roll. He has been in a lot of movies where he had to be the bad guy. Someone like him could match wits with Christin Bale. If not him I would like to see Jim Carrey Back(He never died in Batman Forever) and have regain his memories and remember that Bruce Wayne is Batman. That would be a good match because the Riddler could attack Bruce when he least expect it. Or he cold kidnap Alfred.

Not only should Carrey NEVER be allowed near a Batflick again, he cant come back. This is not a sequel to the Burton/Schumacher movies. Begins and TDK are in their own series/universe.

I think putting a big name star as a villian in part doomed the Burton/ Schumacher films.
