Last month, at the 21st annual GLAAD Media Awards, Detective Comics won the 'Outstanding Comic Book' Award.
GLAAD stands for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Their mission statement is as followed: GLAAD is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
Now why in the world would Detective Comics win an award for this you may ask? Well, Batwoman, that's why. Batwoman (aka Kate Kane), is an openly homosexual woman who is inspired by Batman to take up the mantle of the Bat and fight crime and corruption in Gotham City.
Being a gay American, I am so proud to see a superhero that is gay (and at that, a Bat-Character), and I am proud that DC did such a thing, and it shows that times are changing, slowly but surely. I mean it was only 56 years ago where a Doctor named Frederick Wertham claimed that Batman was gay, and Batman and the comic book industry as a whole was almost destroyed because of it. But now look, a Batwoman is openly gay.
I am so tired of hearing Batman is gay this, Batman is gay that, blah, blah, blah. And some people think that gays may want Batman to be gay, well I'm here to tell you, we don't, we don't care what he is, gay, straight, bi, tri, transgendered, I mean sure, it'd be cool if he was, but whatever, it doesn't change him and we will still love him, he's still Batman!! So what if he's gay? So what if he's straight?
So for the meantime, I'm proud to say that Batwoman is gay, and Detective Comics won an award because she is. But you know, even if she was straight, it wouldn't matter, would it? She's still Batwoman... So my final words: Congratulations Batwoman, Detective Comics, the team of Greg Rucka and JH Williams III, and DC comics.
