Exclusive DC artist David Finch can now add a new title to his resume - writer/artist.
Starting in November 2011, Finch will launch a new ongoing Batman series Batman: The Dark Knight, according to an official announcement by DC Tuesday morning.
The series will be preceded in October by Batman: The Return, a one-shot featuring Finch's pencils and written by Grant Morrison, “kicking off a new era for the Dark Knight and giving fans a quick taste of what's coming in the new ongoing”, according to the publisher.
"I've made no secret of the fact that I've wanted to draw Batman for a very, very long time,” said Finch of the new series. “Batman and his world embody everything that I love about superhero comics, and I could not be happier that I've gotten this opportunity!”
“Maybe the greatest thing about Batman is his versatility as a character. He can be so many things to so many people. For me though, the Neal Adams, Denny O'Neil issues from the early 70's are the most definitive. That work casts a very long shadow over every Batman book that has come out since, and I think it’s a testament to its strength that close to 40 years later it remains modern and vital. Batman is at his best with his hands dirty, chasing the worst of the worst with everything on the line. He's a detective, first and foremost. But he's also the enforcer. Nobody gets away with crime under Batman's watch, and he makes sure they think twice before they step over the line again.
“The Dark Knight takes Batman outside what he knows, into a world of demonology, dark arts, and mystery. He's the ultimate detective, faster, stronger and smarter than any villian, but now he faces creatures to whom logic and mortality don't apply.
“I want Dark Knight to be true to Batman's street level, crime fighter roots. He'll face a rogues gallery that we're all familiar with, but this book will take him on a darker path where he'll be stretched to his physical and psychological limits."As the Batfan I am, I'll get this, but I don't see the need for another Batman ongoing when we have 5 already.

Hm. Sounds very much like what was done in the 70's in Detective. I love that stuff. Since Ive stopped buying comics for 2 years now, I may pick this up to see how it is. Maybe it will bring me back to Batman comics again.

Lovin' the cover art. Reminds me of the covers for Shadow of the Bat. Think I'm gonna have to get back into comics now.

#1 cover: I'm still not liking the new suit very much, visually it's too monochromatic now. Say what you will about the old trunks, they were just enough to break up the monotony of the gray; now it feels oppressive, gives me a headache I missed the bat symbol when it went away, but now that it's back I'm like... OK we were getting along just fine without you FYI... but I do understand why it should be there

the new suit is the absolute worst thing to ever happen to Batman. i dont mind the design, i mind the fact that it gives Bruce all kinds of crazy powers. super-speed? all of Amazo's powers? really? Batman was just fine, DC didnt need to go & make him Iron Man Jr.

[shadow=red,left,700] I am going to wait till I actually read the comic before I make a judgment call on it, but I really not that fond of the new suit ether.
Seriously, was the change really necessary?
Oh well, at least it doesn't have nipples.[/shadow]

Batman was just fine, DC didnt need to go & make him Iron Man Jr. Okay, jlavaia, I believe you acted prematurely about this. This is not the same suit Bruce was wearing in The Road Home one-shots. He was wearing that suit as the Insider. The suit here has no powers and is basically a new design for a regular batsuit. So relax. I will say though that I this is one book I'm most looking forward to.

Cover to issue four: I should also mention the book is getting hit with delays. As of now, #1 is supposed to be out this month on the 29th, with #2 and #3 now being released in February. Most likely, this is because David Finch is behind on the artwork, similar to how Jim Lee and Andy Kubert on their past batwork. Anyway, still looking forward to this one but hating the delays.

Finch talks about Etrigan is the book's first arc: www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30222I read the first issue, and I think it's a good start. An interesting story and of course the art is great, though I think Penguin's monstrous appearance is a bit much. Overall, it's a good book for those just jumping on to Batman, especially if they want to read a solo Bruce book instead of one of Dick's titles.

So bad news, the book has been delayed again. Because of this, issues 2-4 will all be released in March. #2 on the 3rd, #3 on the 23rd, and #4 on the 30.
Argh. It seems Bruce's books are the ones that keep getting delayed. I guess that's happens when you get some of the most detailed artists on these books. Look at how much Morrison's books were delayed last year.
If I had to say something, it would be they should just let Finch write the book and get a faster artist. Not knocking Finch, his art rules, but I'd like to have the next issue sometime this year.

Well that stinks! On the bright side, at least the David Finch cover makes an interesting background for my cell. Thanks for the update!
