Scott Snyder's rise in the comic book world has been pretty rapid in 2009, and will result in him taking over the namesake of DC Comics, Detective Comics, as the new ongoing writer.
Announced this morning by DC Comics, taking on Batman will be Snyder's first assignment as a newly signed exclusive writer. The writer most recently had the limited series Iron Man: Noir at Marvel Comics and launched American Vampire, an ongoing series at Vertigo that featured a second story written by horror legend Stephen King for the first arc. On DCU Blog The Source, Snyder expressed his enthusiasm for Batman. He also announced a co-feature starring police commissioner James Gordon and a return to the storytelling that earned the book its title: Detective work.
“I’ve read Batman religiously since the 80’s, and there are many stories dear to my heart - from Year One to the Cult to No Man’s Land to Hush and The Long Halloween - but I’ve been particularly amazed by what the Batman team in general, and Grant specifically, has done with the character over the last few years. I couldn’t be more thrilled or honored to be working on Detective right now ... this is honestly my dream job. As for the series, I want to play things pretty close to the vest for now, but I can tell you that it’ll star Batman, and will focus heavily on his CSI work and hardcore mysteries set around Gotham. The back-up will center on Commissioner Gordon and involve a certain case - and a dark figure - from his past that comes back to haunt him in present day Gotham. The feature and back-up will be stand-alone, but will affect and inform each other."
This news follows other big bat-stories this week, including David Finch launching the new ongoing Batman: The Dark Knight, Paul Cornell writing a Knight and Squire mini-series fleshing out the British Batman & Robin, and a series of one-shots bringing Bruce Wayne back into the present day DCU in a big way.

dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/08/09/jock-joins-scott-snyder-on-detective-comics/www.newsarama.com/comics/jock-talks-detective-comics-100810.htmlJock joins Scott Snyder on DETECTIVE COMICS Monday, August 9th, 2010
By Alex Segura
A few weeks back, we unveiled half of the new DETECTIVE COMICS creative team. Namely, that AMERICAN VAMPIRE writer Scott Snyder would be stepping into the writer’s seat, handling both the main story and a Commissioner Gordon co-feature. And now we’re ready to break the news about the artist that will be paired with Snyder on the book.
Say hello to your new DETECTIVE COMICS artist: Jock.
Jock should be no stranger to Batman fans in particular, and comic fans in general. He’s responsible for a sterling run on Vertigo’s THE LOSERS and, most recently, a stint on DETECTIVE handling the tail end of Batwoman’s run on the title.
What does this mean for DETECTIVE COMICS readers? Well, in addition to a hard-hitting, noir story from Snyder, fans will be getting a gritty, dynamic and edgy visual representation every months. But you don’t need me to tell you that. Let’s hear it from the writer himself. Take it away, Scott:
“I could not be more excited about working with Jock. Over the last couple months, I’ve spoken to some artists whose work I love, but Jock was always my top choice for this run on Detective Comics. I’ve been a huge fan of his work for a long time. His style is bold and dynamic - perfect for the kind of big, twisted Batman story we’re going to tell together And with David Baron on colors, I can’t wait for November! And please, let us know what you think, DC Nation!”
One of the most interesting parts of Comic-Con for me — as both a DC guy and Batman fan — was watching the instant chemistry and excitement both Scott and Jock had for the character and their upcoming run. It was contagious. Right, Jock?
“Scott and I got the chance to talk a number of times over Comic-Con weekend in San Diego and his original and striking hook for the story took me completely by surprise - I couldn’t believe it hadn’t been done before and I was instantly hooked…
“I’m thrilled to be working with him on this and along with David Baron on colors can’t wait to get this story out there.”
Can’t wait until November? No worries. We’ve got a first look at what’s in store with this here teaser image. And stay tuned to this here blog for more Bat-news in the coming days.

dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/08/13/francesco-francavilla-takes-on-commissioner-gordon-co-feature/Francesco Francavilla takes on COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature Friday, August 13th, 2010
By Alex Segura
Earlier this week, we broke the news that Jock would be pairing with writer Scott Snyder this November to tackle the Dark Knight’s adventures in DETECTIVE COMICS. But there’s more to that book. Pairing with the main feature, Snyder will pen a COMMISSIONER GORDON co-feature, with artist Francesco Francavilla (WildStorm’s GARRISON) on art, and I’m going to step back and let Francesco’s jaw-dropping art speak for itself:
The co-feature, which will not only standalone but also become part of a greater story Snyder is telling, is obviously in good hands, huh? But what do the creators have to say about it? Scott?
“I’m a huge fan of Francesco’s work and have been for quite some time. His style is dark and daring with a good amount of noir to it, but there’s also a striking physicality to his art - his characters always look very real, very vulnerable and human. Which is why I always thought he’d be perfect for the job; because this story is dark and dramatic with some big revelations, but it’s also about Jim Gordon, the man, coming to terms with some very tough skeletons from his past… Or rather, one skeleton in particular - someone who has just now returned to Gotham, too… So I simply could not be more excited about Francesco’s involvement. With Jock on feature, Francesco on back-up, this is exactly the team I’d hoped for! (Huge giant-penny-sized thanks to our editor Mike Marts for the creative freedom and support.) Can’t wait to see what you think of the book, DC Nation!”
And the artist himself:
“I have been a fan of everything Batman since… ever! I’ve also been a fan as of late of the terrific storytelling of that talented fella known as Scott Snyder, so you can imagine my reaction when I got the invitation to be part of this run of DETECTIVE COMICS. I pinched myself, then asked my wife to pinch me, and only then did I realize it was real. All I can say is–can’t wait to start on this! I read Scott’s script and… you guys are in for a treat!”
I think, based on that teaser image alone, things are looking good for DETECTIVE COMICS in November. Stay tuned to The Source today and beyond for more info.

There's been some changes made to #874: dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2011/01/27/francesco-francavilla-debuts-the-cover-to-detective-comics-874/Francesco Francavilla debuts the cover to DETECTIVE COMICS #874 Thursday, January 27th, 2011
By Austin Trunick
Francesco Francavilla has been doing some amazing work in the Detective Comics co-features, and for issue #874 he’ll be taking over the cover of the book with the incredible piece above.
We asked Francesco to give us some insight into his creative process for the cover, so we’ll let him take it away:
With the new 20 page format starting in January, there was no room for the co-feature in Detective #873, so we decided to move part 3 of Skeleton Cases to the following issue, #874. With the move came a bonus for me and for all Detective readers I hope — more Batman/Dick Grayson adventures!
TEC 874 will see the conclusion of Skeleton Cases (with quite an intense sequence between Gordon and his son James Jr.) in the first half of the book, while the second half will be an introduction to the new Batman arc (starting in 876).
This Batman tale is a fun and creepy little story and the cover I did for the issue reflects that. You can see here the 2 concepts I provided for the cover. In the end, everyone agreed to go with the 2nd concept with Batman reflected in the spider’s eyes (my favorite concept as well).
Hope you guys enjoy it and make sure to pick up 874 next month to find out what’s really going on here.
Cheers, Francesco
