Alright guys, after years of collecting I'm going to FINALLY organize and log my items. Back in 2004 I surpassed 3,000 items...I'm not sure where I am currently, but its large to say the least.
My question is this...its a huge undertaking, so I want to do it the right way. I'm going to photograph everything and create a visual log too..but how do YOU count your items? For example, I won't count each trading card in a set, I will count a set of cards as one item..etc. What special exceptions and provisions do you make?

thats quite the task Matt. the only time i've counted things is when i put up alot of stuff for auction. i dont think i've ever counted my entire collection before. and definitely not of everything i buy. i think i've counted my movie collection and game collection, but never my figs or comics. if you have comics, its an easy count (depending on how you store them of coarse), but i can see it being quite time consuming. figures on display are probaly easier to count than those in a box. stuff in a box you have to take out and put back in which can be a chore. i wouldnt even attempt to count accesories or figure parts either.
for you Matt, this will be a project that may take you many months as i know you have a ton of smaller items like keychains and all kinds of things like that as well. just take your time and try not to miss anything and good luck.

Have you SEEN this website?! Of course I'm OCD! lol.
I know its a huge undertaking Joe, but I am really committed to getting it done!
I wanted to know from you other collectors what you think a valid way to count items is. Obviously you can't count each individual card as an item you have to count it all together as one to be reasonable.....what types of things can you think of that might need to be gruoped together?

I have dozens of items, although not nearly as much as you Matt! I personally list my stuff in an EXCELL file, separated in the following sections: VHS, DVDs, Video-Games Comics & Books Posters and Magazines Toys School Supplies Misc I list the name, line, year and manifacturer. Sometimes that's hard though, if the item was second hand.. I only list the licenced things though, which leaves a lot of bootlegs unlisted, but there's no way to list most of them properly. When my collection wasn't this big I could fit it in a single photo and I started taking separate pics of eveything I had. To do it now is going to be a bit more difficult

Haven't been around in a long time but I have the same sort of dilemma I am trying to figure out how to catalog my collection and same how do you count how many items you have exactly. I have been in the planning phases of doing a catalog of my collection for a long time and I am in the process of building a building to house my collection. I estimate my collection between 20k to 30k (I kept track back in the 90s's and had surpassed 6,000 pieces in 96) pieces and that's not counting things like trading cards and small items as separates. It really is a huge undertaking no matter how you look at it if you want to try and catalog a collection.

I flirted with the notion of cataloging my stuff but abandoned the idea. Didn't see much purpose. Other than my comics I pretty much know what I do and don't have despite my collections size. I considered documenting just my more ”valuable” items but why really? I have it all insured as is and value is not only subjective in this hobby, but fluctuates reguluarly. I also have many photos of my collection if ever nec. If I were to attempt cataloging I would do so buy merch type, number, description, approximate cost. I would also consider adding replacement /current value. On a related note, if you look into insuring your stuff be sure to speak replacement cost vs purchase cost.

My collection is only in the very low hundreds, nowhere near 3000+. The only real cataloging I've done is on an EXCEL spreadsheet like batfan93, and mainly so I know how many of a certain toy line or comic title I have and how many I still need. EXCEL works pretty good for this, although with 3000+ items it will definitely take you some time. Good luck on your undertaking.

For my comics (around 2500), I use Comic Collector (collectorz.com). All the Batmans (from any series) are already in (each one with a cover picture, the date, price, ...). You just have to tick the ones you own. For my items, I just take some pictures once in a while (when I had a few of them in my collection)

BatFan - Its nice to see you around here again Lee. It certainly is a crazy undertaking! I think *think* I have my head wrapped around it now. I'm making some decisions as I go along, though. My main motivation is to track everything. Once you get so much, for me at least, I've been forgetting if I have something or if I still have it and what condition its in......argh. I'll keep you all updated over the summer as I undertake this when the weather gets better. I'm thinking about doing a special online diary about the process w/ pics .
