This thread is to remember the 1st Batman franchise, taken from us in it's prime. It's life was full of uncertainty and questions. Until it took a dive in 1997. The 1st franchise started with Tim Burton's film "Batman", the first movie which featured Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. It grossed a total of $413,200,000. The next film from Burton entitled "Batman Returns" in which the Dark Knight took on Catwoman, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and the Penguin, played by Danny Devito. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was sultry as Devito's Penguin was grotesque. This sequel grossed over $282,800,000. In the next film, Tim Burton turned the franchise over to the new director, Joel Schumacher. Schumacer took a new direction to the franchise, making it a comparison to the 60's show starring Adam West. There was a new Batman for "Batman Forever" as Val Kilmer signed on as the Dark Knight. Added to the franchies was Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, and Chris O' Donnell as Robin. The problem with this film were the nipples and codpiece on Batman and Robin's suits, and Carrey's and Jone's versions of the great villains were pshychotic as the Joker. It grossed over $335,000,000. The Batman franchise was slowly dying. Somehow, Schumacher was signed for the 4th film "Batman and Robin." Val Kilmer couldn't put up with Schumacher and left, but George Clooney signed on as the Dark Knight. Just as Forever, Batman and Robin featured the nipples, cockpieces, and but shots of the Dynamic Dou and new partner Batgirl, played by Alicia Silverstone. The villains for the 4th installment were Arnold Shwarzeneggar as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. Bane was also added but was most unlike his comic counterpart. The Batgirl in this film was not the Barbara Gordon of the Commisisoner, but the nice of Alfred. It grossed over $237,300,000, the lowest the franchise has driven in and the last. As Schumacher was planning on the fifth film rumored to be titled "Batman: Triumphant", Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the franchise, due to Bat fan's response to Batman and Robin. The 1st Batman franchise passed away on June 20, 1997. But time will pass and a new generation will soon fill that spot.

I think you mean 'cod-piece', not cock-piece and depending on who you listen to, Kilmer was either sacked due to his constant whining, or left cos he didn't like the direction it was taking.

Muksc: cant say I'm any more in the know, but as I recall, Kilmer opted out of Batman and Robin in order to do "The Saint". His supposed reasoning was the belief the Saint would be a smash similar to Batman and become a $franchise$ all his own. He had supposedly worked a similar deal as Jack Nicholson had for Batman 89 wherein he had a large piece of the merchandising pie. Unfortunately unlike Batman 89, The Saint failed to hit it big. On a side note, I personally quite like Kilmer and really liked The Saint!

yeah I've read that too.
but apparently he was very hard work, a difficult person to work with on Forever, so the crew were quite happy for him to go, so maybe thats where the stories of him being sacked come from.

Batman 89 is one of my fave movies and while I respect others opinions here-Jacks Joker may NEVER be topped-get used to this. I actually felt Begins and 89 were very similar in places and thats why I adore them both.the real test is recreating the magic in a sequel Mr Nolan and I for one hope to god you do and manage to recreate the Joker PERFECTLY onscreen

Michael Jackson was asked to do the soundtrack originally, but he had other commitments so had to turn it down.
and JokerFC, you mention that BM'89 and Begins are quite similar, well on another Batman message board, there is one guy who simply can't help but rip into Begins at any available opportunity, and he has gone through both movies pinpointing the similarities between them, and in summary, his point is that Begins is simply a re-hash of the '89 movie, but with different actors and characters.
if i find it, i'll paste it here, or give the link.

he argues that its far from a 'new start for the franchise', but simply re-making the old films with the same plots and stuff. here's a link to the forum, the guys name is ToM, my name in there is similar to here, Muks_C. check out the thread called 'Batman Begins: A Postmortem', in which he argues that Nolan & Co are slagging us all off, and that the movie is basically saying that the USA (represented by Gotham in the movie) needs to be destroyed, and that the countries affected by terrorism 'had it coming'. and that Ra's is Bin Laden, and Batman is siding with him. i don't know how old he is, so can't tell if he's just a kid with an overactive imagination or what. oh and don't let him find these message boards, its better without him here. you'll realise that when you read some of the crap he writes over there. even a simple poll asking which version of the Begins dvd people will buy has turned into another place for him to spout his gibberish. enjoy: www.comics2film.com/BB2/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=0d06a862f5c941f5d63be696d84d7693oh and another thing that really annoys him is that Batman in Begins wears a 'rubber' suit. he wants the film version of Batman to wear spandex or pyjamas like in Year One or similar. he's saying that begins has far from evolved from the first movie, bevause he still wears a rubber suit. he's a Marvel fanboy too, so loves Spiderman and Fantastic 4 over Batman. i don't know why he bothers to visit the Batman forums.

Thank god Michael Jackson didn't do it.
This ToM fellow sounds like a little @$$hole to me. Dude, what movie was he watching. Yes there are 'some' similarities but it is no remake. It's not a remake, and it is no damn prequel(I get sick of trying to tell people that). It's a restart.
To ToM if you ever come on here, I have one thing to say to you: !@#$ you, you little @$$hole.

I think that comics2film needs a karma system. When someone is down to -100, you tend to skim over what ever it is that they are saying.

@ The Batfan, he loves it when people call him names or get annoyed and flustered, thats his whole purpose. he then takes the moral highground, saying that we have resorted to name-calling because we can't discuss issues on his higher mental level.
the best way is to argue against him in a civilised manner, using 'brains over braun' in other words.
he's already stated that 'when the Superman franchise dies on screen next year...', like he's judged it before its even been released!
just have a read of some of the rubbish he's written, its hilarious and annoying at the same time.

I didn't really like Batman 89, and felt that Batman Returns was the best film out of the previous ones.

I have always said that Batman Returns was the best batman film!! I just think it has the emotion etc.!! SRA Better than Batman Begins ? Batman Returns is my favorite. Batman is great, and the Joker is my favorite character, so that is definitely a close second. But Batman Returns has style, both in a visual and emotional sense. It may be seen as blasphemy, but I prefer Batman Returns to Begins. The reason being, Begins doesn't have the replay value to me as Returns does. Don't get me wrong, Begins is a great film, and is exactly what the franchise needs, but as a personal opinion, Batman Returns is my favorite.

Its funny, bat-fans seem to have such specific and split feelings towards Returns? Out of all Bat-films, Returns seems to be strictly Love it or Hate it? or regard it as the Best or Worst of the franchise? I happen to fall more into the later opinion, but personally have been able to pick elements from Every film thus far that I can enjoy (yes even B+R lol).
IMHO, there has yet to be a perfect or definitave Bat-film, and I dont have faith there ever will be? There are and will always be simply too many hands involved and too many interests and objectives to satisfy for that.
