[shadow=green,left,300]I'll touch on the Catwoman comparison first...because I think you may take that back down the road....Catwoman was disliked not because of her look...but because it wasn't selina...it had really nothing to do with batman at all! That was the problem....now with Riddler...I assure you he IS the riddler still. He riddles his butt off! lol. His look may be drasticly different, but his personality is not...I think thats a misconception that will be hard to clear up until next year when the ep airs. I hope that makes sense.
Now for the anime thing...I actually would love an ultra-violent batman anime..but we are in the minority my friend...hell people were complaining about matsuda's style thinking it was TOO anime! .....and these people like Teen Titans! go figure lol. But I'm with you there man.
as for backstory...keep in mind that while things aren't developing like btas that doesn't mean it won't. They have to debut someone and throw them out there...many of the villians are slated to come back for more eps, hence more character developement and backstory. Its brand new...it needs time to evolve and grow into its own complete mythos. I'm confident it will get there [/shadow]
I'll agree that one of the reasons that Catwoman was despised so much was the fact that she wasn't Selina and had nothing to do with Batman, but I did hear just as many people complaining about the look. I guess that statement also goes along with my feelings that a lot of people didn't care for it because it was a character redesign to the extreme (so much so in fact that it actually removed her from the Batman universe). I suppose my point in that comparison was to illustrate the fact that I don't think slight character changes are a bad idea, but when you go overboard with redesigning a character, then you might as well rename them and create an entirely new one, because you have traveled beyond the point where that character is the same one that it was loosely based on. I mean if a character doesn't look the same, act the same, or have the same history, then why call it the same character?
I just personally feel that there's only so much you can change a fictional iconic character before you lose what has made them special. Now if they change the look somewhat (as in Firefly's case) so be it... it's a cool updated look but it kept the same basic elements without going overboard, and did not compromise the character. Catwoman looked great in The Cat & the Bat, even though it's not any suit we've seen before. In fact, I've liked the look of a lot of the redesigns that the team has done (with the exception of Joker, Cluemaster, and to a much lesser extent Bane) It's the back story changes throughout that have disappointed me.
Like I said before, I know they're trying to work in uncharted ground, but I was really hoping to see more of an expansion of the Batman universe into a cartoon form, with only minor necessary changes, not a recreation of it.
It's good to see Batman out there, and I hope the show develops more fully in the future (which I'm sure it will), but so far I've been a bit let down that the source material for so many great untold stories and so much rich history has been left by the wayside for the sake of updates to the characters.
