“Batman: War Games”
In a Batman panel late Thursday afternoon, Bob Schreck, Matt Idelson, Bill Willingham, Judd Winick and other DC Batman representatives kept the details of next month’s Batman: War Games story arc completely under wraps. Schreck did say that after the Batman: Murderer and Batman: Fugitive story lines, he wanted to push the Batman envelope “as far as possible,” so he feels that by the end of Batman: War Games, many readers will “probably be angry” at the changes that will occur to Batman and his Gotham world. In War Games, Gotham City “goes on fire” due to rampant gang warfare. Batman finds himself in the middle of the conflict, trying both to make sense of it and stop it. While not specifically listing what Batman villains will appear, Schreck did say that several of them “won’t look pretty” by story’s end. “There will be a lot of blood,” Schreck asserted.
War Games begins in August with a 12 cent Batman Adventure and ends with the October issue of Batman, 25 issues over three months involving Gotham Knights, Gotham Central, Catwoman, Robin, Detective Comics, Batman, Nightwing, and Legends of the Dark Knight (but NOT Birds of Prey or any other non-Batman related DC title).
It was also announced that Judd Winick will take over writing duties of Batman after War Games (and he will still remain on Green Arrow and Outsiders). His first story arc will be titled “Under the Hood,” which introduces a newly formatted Red Hood character (long time readers will remember that The Joker was the Red Hood before suffering the toxic waste damage that disfigured and transformed him into the lunatic he recognize today). The Red Hood will wreck havoc and his identity, which will be revealed at the end of the story arc, will surprise readers, Winick promised.
Writer Anderson Gabrych will move from Detective Comics to Batgirl, while David Lapham (creator of Stray Bullets) will write and provide covers for a 12 issue stint on Detective titled “City of Crime.”
In other Batman news, Matt Wagner has agreed to produce a 12 issue stand-alone story titled Dark Moon Rising, set early in Batman’s career. (Wagner jokingly referred to his story as Batman: Year 1.5.) Wagner described the story as a cocky Bruce Wayne getting humbled when for the first time he has to deal with “super-villains” who aren’t intimidated by the Batman costume. Wagner stated some familiar and not-so-familiar Batman rogues will appear.
