Jean-Paul Valley is an Assassin trained since birth by the Order of St. Dumas. Thats all I can remember, but you probably already knew that since, I believe, its explained in Knightfall/quest. edit: LOG has a wealth of information available from the Front Page, like the Collected Issues of the Dark Knight. www.rasalghul.co.uk/database/characters_details.asp?id=1

He was also genetically engineered in a test tube, his DNA mixed with that of various strong, ferocious animals to give him augmented strength and ferocity. His life had been planned by The Order of St. Dumas for centuries before his actual birth, meaning he was going to be their sacred warrior, or something. The System, a method of physical and psychological training, was used to make him even stronger. It also makes him lose himself and be an unrelenting assassin, or so I've read. Well, that's what I know.

Azrael's story can be pretty much learned from "Sword of Azrael". But throught the series we also learned some additional points about his genetic manipulation and brain washing.
Azrael effectivley had two personalities. Jean Paul the student who then became Azrael once he put on the mask or was in extreme danger.
As Azrael his speed and strength was at least the equal of Batman most probably better. But the "education" process he went through to become Azrael was in conflict with the role of Batman.
As Batman, Jean Paul became more and more like Azrael until Bruce was forced to return and retake the Mantle of the Bat. A feat achieved by guile and not speed and strength alone.
The first half of the Azrael series were a very good read. Later on it all just faded away into monotony.

FLAMEBIRD, BRUCE'S RECOVERY FROM HIS SPINAL INJURY, AND AZRAEL'S TIME AS BATMAN AND FALL FROM GRACE APPEARED IN THE "KNIGHTQUEST" STORYLINE, WHICH IS NOT COLLECTED IN TPB, SO YOU'LL HAVE TO HIT THE BACK ISSUES BIN IF YOU WANT TO READ IT (ALTHOUGH I'LL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE).

Yeah, DC collects "important" stories in a lot of trades (Knight collections, NML, etc.) and leaves others out. Kinda sucks just a little. Tis why I try to collect the originals on a lot of the titles.
I REALLY thought Az was gonna be Hush...oh well.
I like Az as a character. Even have a cat named Azrael.

Hopefully Azrael is gone for good, I never liked the character and there are enough heroes running around Gotham today as it is.

Hopefully Azrael is gone for good, I never liked the character and there are enough heroes running around Gotham today as it is. Grrr! Azrael was a potentially great character. Left as he was, with a troubled mind and battling the Azrael / Jean Paul character issues, he could have been great. The first issues of the Azrael series had potential - but eventually I don't think the writers could be bothered and he became a monotonous wannabe. He should never have fully discovered his beginnings. I'd have to agree there are probably too many heroes so he probably won't be missed... unless we can start seeing a few more like Spoiler getting taken out W

I just think that Batman works best on his own or with a very small group of allies, it's fine to use Batman to help establish characters like Azrael or Orpheus but I feel that once the fans know who they are it's time for them to leave the Bat-books. Like I've said I just don't feel there should be so many heroes operating out of Gotham City, it just waters down the Batman character and makes him seem less important in HIS city.

No offense taken. We all have our own opinions. Yes, I think if he was to have wandered away from Gotham and the Bat team and went off to do his own thing it would have been the best thing to do. An occaisional cross over / return would have been ok but hanging around Batman like a lost puppy just didn't cut it.

I would be really interested if Azreal would comeback as a great villan. I was kinda hoping for hush to be azrael. I was 11 years old when az replaced bruce for that small length of time and I hated him then because of course there is only one batman and thats bruce wayne. I feel the writers obviously wanted us to hate him because they knew bruce would eventully come back which is why I would want to see him as a villan. I loved to hate azrael I think he could be a cool villan.
