OK, I'd like your nomination for the worst-ever DC hero. If we get a diverse enough list, we'll do a poll.
The rules:
-- Character must be one whom the creators obviously took seriously.
-- Character cannot be a satirical character like Ambush Bug or even Blue Devil. That's cheating.
-- Character cannot be a one-shot or so obscure as to be instantly laughable like Bwana Beast or Mr. Terrific.
Give your pick and state your reasoning.

Um, I liked the original Golden Age Mr. Terrific. Anyway, I never liked TNT and Dan the Dyna-Mite. The costumes were beyond horrible. I also really hated the Vigilante of the 80s.

And I like the modern Mr. Terrific.
Let's see...worst...gimme a sec....
Kole. Azrael (Teen Titans, not Jean Paul) Anyone with Black in their name that is African American (Black Lightning, etc.) Snapper Carr CAt-Man Copperhead Cyborg Superman Elasti-Girl 1/2 of the people with "Fire" in their name Gunfire and most of the rest of Bloodlines Natasha Irons (in Steel costume, ok as character) Killer Croc (At least not as a Batman villian) Lady Flash Magenta The Manhunters Superman Red Superman Blue Mister America Orpheus Pied Piper Supermen of America T.O. Morrow Vigilante II (the one mentioned above, V3 was cool though) Danny Chase Young Heroes in Love Spectre
That should be all. I included villians, though.

[shadow=green,left,300]lol Superman.[/shadow] Ha! I figured it wouldn't take long for someone to mention Superman! But actually, that's my point. I'm talking MAJOR characters here, not side characters. I mean I'm not looking for the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy. For example, my pick is Martian Manhunter. I know a lot of people like him but I find him inherently absurd, even if they have tinkered with his backstory. A green man from Mars with a bunch of powers that are not terribly original, whose name translates as John Jones. Ai yi yi.

HHMMM I agree, Martian manhunter is ultimately pretty lame. Never really cared for him but he has grown on me quite a bit due to his portrayal in the JL toon. Same for John Stewart, never liked him in the books, but on the toon he's pretty tough, Hawkgirl on the other hand still has no real appeal for me. As far as other less than stellar characters go, I would include supergirl, Elongated man, Blue devil, far too many disposables to list but I would definately erase any hardcore "themed" characters, ala any inspired by the old west, or military stereotypes Etc. LOL

Batlaw, I agree with you on Elongated Man. I'm still not sure why he stuck around when DC also had Plastic Man in the fold. Bad ripoff.

Snapper Carr, always an utterly pointless character in my opinion.
And personally I wouldn't limit either Blue Devil or Ambush bug as merely being joke characters, both, especially Blue Devil, actually kick much butt in my opinion. Then again I'd say that Mr Terriffic is far from obscure too in the DCU, but that's just me. Then again as a long time DCU fanatic I also like most of the characters mentioned thus far, so... ;D

I know MM has had a real resurgence because of JL and JLU. And I think they've done a pretty good job with him on the show, all things considered. I'm just saying that on general principle, he's a pretty weak character.
And in my definition of "major" I guess I'm thinking of characters who either have carried long-running titles, are central to long-running group titles or are familiar to non-comic fans. That's why I personally wouldn't consider someone like Mr. Terrific.
It's all subjective, obviously. I'm just trying to get at what drives people to read comics and what, pardon the pun, drives them batty.
Other nominations?

I'm gonna catch serious heat for this:
Huntress.
There. I said it.
WHADDYA GONNA DO ABOUT IT?
I'm sorry, but she just doesn't interest me at all, and the fact that whenever she shows up she's totally dismissed by Batman only makes me feel like I'm right.

Wow, now we're cooking!
Atom, Aquaman and Huntress. Interesting picks all.
Re: the Huntress, I lost all interest in her post-Crisis. Without being Batman's daughter she is not at all compelling to me.
We may get enough soon for a legit poll. Keep 'em coming!

[shadow=purple,left,300]The Huntress is not an especially great character, imo. Her history is rather convoluted.
But I think this thread is forgetting one important character: SPOILER. Ugh. What was the point of her? Thank God she got the boot, that's what was preventing me from stomaching those stories.[/shadow]

LOL Spoiler was worthless as anything other than maybe a minor supporting cast member in the Robin title and the Robin title only.
Huntress though, I actually like personally. In the same vain as Catwoman has evolved. It's interesting to have a character that toes the line while sharing Batman's "universe". I like her seeking his approval and getting shunned and the elements, stories and "openings" that offers. Plus her and Nightwing's relationship has been enjoyable too IMO.
When it comes to the upper tier characters. The higher you go, the more subjective it becomes. Example, plastic man or Aquaman could easily be considered the "worst character" by some, yet held in high regard by others? For me, Aquaman / Plas serve a purpose or has a "role" to play in the DCU. I.E. the only water based hero or the only stretch powered comic relief Etc. But w/ plastic man, we dont need Mr. Dibney. Aquaman while reasonably not the most "powerful" does have some legitimate "reason for being". Likewise does the Atom. Not that I'm a big fan of either or not, but I accept their "roles". What I dislike are having these lessor heros forced uppon us and being told and "reminded" how really great, classic and important they are! and "people just dont realize so and so is the greatest scientist or chemist or whatever in the DCU". Know what I mean? A lame character is a lame character. There are reasons why some work and are liked and others arent. Why use em!? Thats just me. I prefer a clean ship. Yet, I believe there is room for all? and the sales (fan reaction) should dictate. No? (man, I mustve been holding that in a while?) LOL

Green Lantern John(PERSONALITY BYPASS) Stewart oh my god what an utterly terrible character, seems to have had a charisma transplant and that constant dissaproving look REALLY BUGS ME how does this guy have the imagination to use that ring??it seems Hal or Kyle would use it better if they had received a lobotomy.and the final point of my rant......his inclusion in the JL cartoon is unforgivable :(absolutely UNFORGIVABLE.thanks for this thread batdan i needed to vent!!!

[glow=red,2,300]green arrow IMO is the worst DC character... i think he is just a batman copycat... he was a rich guy, with a young sidekick (speedy), used to have an "arrowplane" and "arrowmobile", used to have a secret headquarters known as the "arrowcave", and used to be summoned by the police headquarters with a flamming "arrowsignal"...
well, thats just my opinion...[/glow]

I'm a firm believer that comics and the DCU in particular are oversaturated with heroes to the point of damaging the medium. How compelling is a world with dozens and dozens of heroes, so many of whom just happen to have one particular power? I'd rather keep things to a choice few characters that are handled more expertly. The pool is diluted. I'll throw out another one: Hawkman.

I honestly believe that with any character it all comes down to how well (or not) they are written at any given time and that most people can often be just one step away from becoming a fan of any given character, all it really takes is reading one great, truly defining story featuring that character to become a convert. Just my own theory anyhow. That said though I still hate Snapper Carr. Severen.

I thought Wild Dog was pretty lame. Anybody remember him?
He ran around with camo pants, a blue jersey with a red dog on it, wore a white hockey goalie mask, basically DC's answer to The Punisher, but super lame!
I think he was a mechanic by day and gun wielding super hero maniac by night, sometimes during the day.
