I hope it's okay if I introduce a new kind of thread, similar to the latest finds thread; when members read new comics, tpbs, or graphic novels, they can post what they read and what they thought of it...if an MOD doesn't like the idea, they may delete this, I was just thinking that this would be a good way to get some new opinions on any comic, from any decade, in issue, tpb, or graphic novel form. I hope people like the idea. As for me, I just read Haunted Knight. I really liked this Loeb/Sale compilation, which puts together their three Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween specials. It is very well written and illustrated, like all of their stuff, altho I didn't like it quite as much as the Long Halloween, but that would be tough to beat. I hope this thread can continue for a long time, it seemed to me like something that should be a fundamental part of the comic talk section. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the idea and on any comics you read, LoGothamites!

I also recently read Knightfall part 1...very good story, too, IMO. The art is pretty average, but not bad. I thought it was very dramatic, leading up to Batman's downfall. You really can't get a proper feeling of Bane's strategy, or the tremendous scale of Batman's defeat. I recommend this one, too.

Just read Batman: The Hill from May 2000.
It's very interesting. All about a drug lord operating in the Hill who doesn't believe in Batman. Puts it all down to Gordon being behind the charade, and is therefore under the misaprehension that as the law must operate under due process the Batman also has his limitations.
Somehow Batman must convince him and bring him to justice. In doing so he must also leave his mark on the Hill's community.

Even though I'm a big Batfan and a regular contributor now to this board, I haven't been a regular comics reader for many years. I just recently picked up The Long Halloween TPB and here's my take.
Some minor spoliers ahead but nothing that gives away any key elements of the story.
-- I liked the notion of spelling out how Gotham morphed from a mob-run city to one where costumed villains are more the "norm."
-- I liked the build-up to how Harvey Dent became Two-Face but I would have preferred a more intricate look at his descent into madness. Batman: TAS did a more effective job of showing the roots of his mental illness.
-- I don't think Gordon was as nuanced a character as he should have been. If this story follows Year One, we've already seen him as flawed. He was a little too goody-goody here. And how come he seemed to have such a solid marriage? Where was the carry-over from his relationship with Essen?
-- How did Selina go from being a street-level prostitute to traveling in the same circles as Bruce Wayne?
-- Hated the last couple of pages. If you've read the story, you know what I'm referring to. Ridiculous.
-- Heresy alert: I was not particularly impressed with Sale's version of Batman himself. He didn't need to do a carbon copy of Mazzucchelli's Batman but his Bats, I find, is on what I like to call comic book steroids. It actually seemed out of place in the world he's drawn here.
-- Nickel for your thoughts if you've read this story.

I think this is a good idea Hush. I'd suggest that this thread be used as kind of a brief - "hey I just read Bam Smash Comix and it was great!" type of thing, like you guys have been doing so far. If you want to post a more detailed review of a book, I'd ask that you please do so in the review section: legionsofgotham.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=comicreviewThanks.

Would you prefer I transfer my Long Halloween review over there? If you want to, you certainly can. It would allow you to include some of the spoilers (again, if you want to) and give the book a rating of how good you thought it was. As it is, due to the length of the book, I think that there could be much more of an indepth review done, discussing plot points, character development, use of color, etc, but that would be up to you.

Re-reading Arkham Asylum, with the script! I love the wording Grant uses... It's a Batfan's wet dream.

How did Selina go from being a street-level prostitute to traveling in the same circles as Bruce Wayne? Oh, BTW, her modern origin was revised after Year One came out, I believe. I think the prostitute bit was altered. I never liked that aspect of her history, anyway.

I am in the process of reading the just released Nightwing Year One. It is nice to see Chuck Dixon at the helm of one of my favorite characters. In my opinion, continuity was never tighter when Chuck was writing Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey. I also just reread Batgirl:Year One which was also a very good read.

I just caught up on Exiles (it and Astonishing are my fave X-titles) to get prepared for the Age of Apocolypse month, which should be good (hey, the original is good...and at least Claremont isn't writing it...I dropped Excalibur and Uncanny because of his crap writing).

Just recently read through Cataclysm and all five volumes of No Man's Land, still classics, though like all such wide ranging crossover stories some writers do a better job at things than others.
Now I'm just contemplating reading The Question Quarterly issues 1 to 4, and The Question Returns special, all by Denny O'Neil.
I've actually had these for a while now and just haven't gotten around to reading them for whatever reason, even though I'm a big fan of Denny O'Neil's work on the regular Question series (which also first introduced the character of Harold in issue 33, before the character showed up in Batman a few months later, fact fans) so I think they're definitely what I need to read next, hopefully get time in the next couple of days or so.
