The archived editions of 'classic' stories are widely available now- I suggest you pick up some classic reading.
Another collection I might recommend for someone starting out is Batman: Four of a Kind. It's a re-telling of the origins of Poison Ivy, the Riddler, Man-Bat and the Scarecrow, collecting four Year One Annuals. The Riddler story is especially great, and these will give you a nice background of the characters (although the Man-Bat story is not brilliant).
However, you're missing some important contributions: the Animated Batman books. To start things off, I'd recommend 'Batman: Dangerous Dames and Demons.' Although lots of the stories are kid-oriented, they're still lots of fun. The big attraction is Mad Love- the origin of Harley Quinn herself, which in itself reads like a (somewhat dirtier) B:TAS episode! There's also an award-winning Joker story, a fun Batman/Demon team up with Ras Al Ghul and a very amusing Harley Quinn mini-story detailing her release- and subsequent return- to Arkham Asylum. If you don't want to spend so much, you could pick up Mad Love on its own, but it may not be so widely available.

I would have to say Batgirl Year One along with Robin Year One are solid reads. I also liked the TPB Haunted Mansion along with Batman Year One and Two for that matter.

These have already been said but Robin Year One and Batgirl Year One are great books. Batman: War on Crime is pretty good too.

If you don't want to spend so much, you could pick up Mad Love on its own, but it may not be so widely available. Mad Love is great. Try looking for some of the harder to find ones in back issue bins. I found this in a bin at my comic shop for $2.

I'd recommend: The Killing Joke The Joker: Devil's Advocate My personal two favourite Joker stories ever. Batman: The Long Halloween Batman: Dark Victory (sequel to TLH) Great follow ups to Batman: Year one, adding further detail to Bat's earlier career. Batman: Death In The Family Batman: A Lonely Place Of Dying (follow up to DITF) Detailing the loss of one Robin, and the birth of another. Batman Adventures: Mad Love Batman: Batgirl Batman: Mr Freeze Batman: Ego All really nice prestige format books that give added insight into Harley Quinn, the Barbara Gordon Batgirl, Freeze and Batman's inner demons respectively. Batman: Cataclysm (prelude to No Mans Land) Batman: No Man's Land vols 1 - 5 With this storyline you could also start as far back as Batman Contagion and Batman Legacy, but Legacy is almost impossible to find these days (in fact if anyone can hook me up let me know), and Cataclysm is really the start of the major new arc anyway. Batman: Evolution (new Gotham volume 1) Batman: Officer Down (new Gotham volume 2) Continuing after the No Man's Land saga. That'd do for starters anyway, but there's plenty more great stuff out there too. Severen.

Yep, Severen pretty much covered a bunch of my favorites. I think if you start off reading everything that we suggested you'll be in pretty good shape. It may take you a year and some nonstop reading but who needs to work anyway! ;D

I think you guys covered all the bases - my personal favorites are 'Ego', and those three Jeff Loeb/Tim Sale Halloween specials (from '93, '94, and '95) that were the precursors to 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory'.

prodigal, mr wayne goes to washington, troika, the death lottery (det. 708-710 with Deathstroke), and if you want to see where Black Mask really become a top bat villain then read the Catwoman arc relentless.

I second the "Strange Apparitions" TPB collection. Can't wait for the sequel this year.
(Of course DKR and Year One go without saying ...)

...those three Jeff Loeb/Tim Sale Halloween specials (from '93, '94, and '95) that were the precursors to 'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory'. Yeah, those are great. They are collected in a tpb called Haunted Knight. I highly recommend it, too.
