Ok folks we all know Batman is our eternal favorite but we all have someone that runs second/third or not......if you do... stick them down and say why and if you can, try to avoid the Bat family ,if you cant well thats ok too mine are Captain America/Wolverine(80s,90s version they have done too much with him since then)/Hal jordan GL with Cap I love the whole non super powers thing(much like bats)and the hatred he and skull have for one another I admire his spirit and I gotta admit when it looked like the x men were beat in the Onslaught saga and Cap and the others were coming through the smoke(cap leading just like he did in the suicide to stop Onslaught)the hairs stood up on the back of my neck especially when I glimpsed that shield through the dust Wolverine was written so excellently during X-tinction agenda,X-cutioners song(where he traps feral BRILLIANT!!)Fatal Attractions and above all the Mutant Massacre(where Storm sends him to the tunnels to kill the mauraders) and his subsequent 2 all out brawls with sabretooth the second of which I rank in the top 5 ever in ANY comic.also that hate he and sabretooth have is right up there too Hal Jordan,Just the best in DC apart from bats his absence from the cartoon made me realise how much i missed him and made me look in anger at my TJ Parrallax.hals spirit much like caps is AWESOME his fight with mongol in engine city proved that beyond any doubt and i eagerly awaited his return.also my liking for Hal has created exreme Venom for the pretender Stewart he aint fit to lick Hals boots and thats my two cents!! chime in this could get good.......

I really love Wolverine; his character and history are so deep and emotional and interesting. I guess Superman is cool when done right. My favorite version of the Superman story, and I love it, is the show Smallville. If not for that, I would most likely not have much interest in Superman at all. But I find Smallville to be my second favorite superhero story, after everything Batman. ;D

HHMMM... Captain America: Icon and Marvel's version of Superman. The whole mom and apple pie, true blue boy scout "purity". Like Superman, he represents the near impossible to live up to standards of heroism and idealism that any of us can only aspire to but never achieve within "real life". One of the all time coolest costumes and a pretty classic, fun, origin thats rich in history and Americana. Ditto for Superman who I will also ad to my list here. The "ultimate Immigrant" and classic success story. Captain Marvel: Just fun and cool IMO. The ulltimate childhood fantasy, ala "wouldnt it be cool if..." Etc. An excellent example of a relatable character for any kid. Like Robin, only capable of himself being "the Man". Daredevil: A very imaganitive and enjoyable character IMO. Also serves as a great role model for determination and an excellent example of overcomming adversity. Also enjoyable because he's a "flawed" and conflicted hero who doesnt always win. The Punisher: The total "Man's man". His appeal comes from a much darker place. That would take too much space to try and articulate or dicect here. The Crow: Just like The Punisher, not enough room and very similar in his appeal. Ultimately I would have to boil it down to the concept of empowering victims. Naturally you cant exclude characters such as Spiderman, Green lantern, Hulk, X-men, Etc. all of whome represent or are dirivative of something naturally within most of us. But excluding the Bat-Family, these would make up most of my personal top choices (in no order)

yeah I like Daredevil too and punisher, they both have appeal for me big time.I thought Superman was especially excellent during the Imperiex war and near the end of his first bout with Doomsday(subsequent doomsady stories were NOT up to scratch)

I've always kinda wished that Spider-Man was in the DCU. Superman is a fave too.
In essence, I like the classic DC heroes: GL and Flash (Silver Age and later), GA, WW among the key ones. Captain Marvel, too, to some degree.
Beyond those, though, I think most heroes are silly. I give Aquaman, Atom and Hawkman passes for nostalgia purposes but I'm all for stripping down the DCU to its basic components.
And I'm not a fan of Batman teaming up with a lot of these guys.

I love Wolverine's new costume, it's really made me pay attention to his comic, and i'm enjoying it.
Green Arrow seems cool too, he's turning up in a lot of things.
I REALLY enjoy the Ultimates team and Ultimate Spider-Man!

I love James Bond too but I guess he doesn't really qualify as a superhero! I'll second that choice!

I think Bond counts, he's like Batman without the cool costume!
I also really love the Shadow.

It would have to be The Man of Steel for me. I just bought the Superman The Animated Series Volume 1 and I will be watching it today. My second favorite after Superman is of course Wonder Woman.

See...but you have it worded like Batman is AUTOMATICALLY our favorite...and he's not for me....
I like Nightwing more. I know you said minus the Bat family, but I'd still have to say in order it would be:
Nightwing Robin (Tim) Batman Deathstroke Green Lantern (Kyle) Oracle Flash Iron Man Kid Flash/Impulse Batgirl (Cassandra) Superman Rogue Nightcrawler Arsenal Deadman Daredevil Gambit
I could go on...but that gives you a list. Really want a why for everyone? :-)
Conversly...favorite villians would be:
Bullseye Harley Quinn (when done right) Two-Face (when done right) Hush Zoom Joker (when done right) Lex Luthor (when done right) Riddler Captain Cold
That's all off the top of my head though.

I'm a huge fan of the DC Universe, so there's many, many characters that I have a great deal of fondness for, but I'll stick to a few of my most favourite (minus Batman, who along with Joker is my all time favourite, and the rest of the Bat Family):
From DC:
Green Arrow - Perpetually under rated character, and anyone who thinks of him merely as the poor man's Batman simply hasn't read enough of the character, as the actual differences in character, style and motivation are all quite different. Yeah, once he had a teenage sidekick just as Batman did, but once upon a time so did Flash, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Sandman, and quite a few others. And yes, he came from money, but his experiences and motivations were completely his own (and led to the loss of his fortune), and he's always been far more political and far more of a rebel than Bruce and most other heroes, and has his fair share of personal flaws. Plus he's just plain cool and fun to read.
Sure, the arrow car and the arrow plane back in the day were a bit derivative, but there's only so many ways that a superhero that can't fly can get around, you know? So personally I always cut him some slack on that account.
Add to which, he's had many great chapters in his comic book life, from the classic Hard Travelling Heroes Neal Adams/Denny O'Neal stuff in the 70's to the brilliant Mike Grell stuff of the late eighties to early 90's, and he's also a character that has actually been allowed to grow, mature and get older, which I also always appreciated. My fave DC character outside of the DC Universe.
Other DC Characters I'm a huge fan of:
Though they're not superheroies per se, I've always been a huge fan of Sgt Rock, Unknown Soldier, Blackhawk and Enemy Ace, again because they're characters of depth that you can actually believe in.
Another definite non hero, John Constantine (Hellblazer) and vertigo anarchistic gonzo journalist of the future Spider Jerusalem (Transmetropolitan) are definite favourites too.
As for more traditional (and the odd non traditional) superheroes, The Question, Wildcat, Green Lantern (primarily Hal Jordan & the under rated John Stewart, but pretty much all the main GL's), Flash (Barry, Wally and Jay), Deathstroke and the mysterious Phantom Stranger all also rate highly for me.
As for Marvel:
I just never quite clicked with the Marvel Universe as much as I did with DC for some reason. I mean sure, Marvel has many, many great characters, I collect a few books, and I do appreciate what they have to offer, but I was just never as drawn into the Marvel Universe in general and in it's entirity as I always have been with the DCU. That said I still have my Marvel favourites, most notably:
The Punisher - Without a doubt my favourite Marvel Character, and one of the truly great anti-heroes of all of comicdom.
Other faves include Nick Fury, Black Widow, Ghost Rider, and to a slightly lesser extent Wolverine, DareDevil, Elektra, Moon Knight and Hulk. As you can likely tell I'm more a fan of the darker, grittier side of the Marvel street.

Green Arrow - Perpetually under rated character ... Great post, Sev. I agree with you in large measure on GA. Since his late '60s-early '70s redesign, he's truly been his own man. His earlier incarnation was incredibly bland. His is one case where an OK idea was turned into a terrific character. And I also like the fact that he's been allowed to mature. And anyone who thinks he's too derivative, I point you to the final chapter of DKR for a great distillation of the differences between Bats and GA. Allies, yes. But they are not the same person.

1. Dr. Fate More for the look of the character his costume rocks and you can't go wrong with magic.
2. Blue Beetle He reminds me of Spiderman & Nightwing wrapped in one.
3. Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan, Guy Garnder) The GL's are really cool with all there space adventures, and you gotta love Guy's atittude!
4. Swamp Thing/The Demon

My liking of John Stewart comes primarily from his comic appearances, going all the way back to his appearances in the 70's, so I was a fan of his way before the justice league cartoon even started, and I still say he's had a rich and rather dramatic history since he first hit the scene, from being a reserve to later a full GL, to leader of the Darkstars, through to some pretty major personal tragedies and even his own breakdown, which happened way before Hal famously had his and went way off the deep end. He was also the first Green Lantern who refused to hide his identity behind a mask, though given some of the tragedies that befell him over the years that may not have been the wisest of moves.
That said I also imagine that the show would have garnered him a new generation of fans unfamiliar with his comic exploits. At the same time he seems to cop a fair bit of flack from people who would have rather seen Hal of Kyle on the tv show instead of him, and who seem to think of him as being unworthy of being the show's GL. Still, such is life I guess. ;D
