I was just wondering what you guys think would happen if Jason Todd had not been killed by the Joker all those years ago. What if the fans voted for him to live? What would've happen?

there'd be no Tim Drake. I think that's about it.

There's been a rumor going around for years that the fans actually voted for him to live. DC execs at the time skewed voting and ended up having him killed.
I'll see what I can dig up and get back to you on this.

Hmm....I'm not finding any info anymore. Maybe the rumors I'd heard years ago have been proven to be false - all I'm finding now is #'s showing how many called for and against:
Over 10K calls - 5,271 for letting him live, and 5,343 for killing him.

hmm, I know the voting was VERY close and recall those in charge at thetime being quite shocked, at both the slight margin and the end result? I also remember hearing the creators (obviously) had contingency stories/plans in place for either outcome but fully expected Jason to LIVE. I wish I could remember what tidbits I had heard about their intentions for the "Living"Jason Todd. At any rate, I'm pretty confident Jason wouldnt have lasted long after the Death in the Family storyline had he survived at the time. One way or another, living or dead, they wouldve phased him out in favor of change, drama, and a more liked and well accepted Robin. Whether or not that would have still been Tim Drake is another question? No idea how far in advance his origin had been imangined?

My understanding is that they didn't realize the outcry killing off Robin would cause and I think they hustled a new one to make up for it. (My guess, tho, is that they figured on adding a new one if Jason were voted out anyway.)
I actually voted to have him live because I couldn't bring myself to vote to kill Robin, any Robin.
I also think some of the disdain for Jason Todd was misplaced. He wasn't a terribly well-thought out replacement for Dick Grayson and in his short time he even had his origin retconned.
The idea of him being whiny and headstrong were fairly late/revisionist developments. I think when it came down to it, some fans just resented the return of Batman and Robin when Batman had effectively been on his own for about 15 years.
That and I think some fans just liked the sick idea of calling in and killing him.

We were behind here with the whole voting thing so i never got a chance to vote either way.I do believe had he lived they would have had to try and seriously re-imagine his personality or else just phase him out some way. I'm grateful he went though as i have much preferred Tim and enjoyed him a lot more since he first appeared.I never really liked Jason although he was following Dick which was a hard act to follow for fans who grew up with him.

NEW WHAT IF QUESTION!
WHAT IF BRUCE'S PARENTS WERE NEVER SHOT? Would Dick Grayson be orphaned? Would Bruce be married? What would happen to Gotham?
I'll take any answer except "We wouldn't be here right now talking about Batman." That's a given.

I envision Bruce Wayne would most likely be the Bruce Wayne he pretends to be now when unmasked... but perhaps a little less "animated". I see no reason why Dick Grayson wouldnt have suffered the same fate. The only diference would be most likely a total lack of intervention and involvement by Bruce Wayne. I believe Bruce Wayne would most likely have suffered several failed marriages if not married? (I think if they had lived, Martha Wayne would see to that and Bruce would probably humor her if nothing else lol) I also imagine a sizeable amount of the Wayne fortune would be lost, forfeited or squardered once Bruce Wayne would take over after Thomas Wayne dies or retires. I dont believe Bruce Wayne wouldve went on to do anything to deliberately or incredibly noble or beneficial to his fellow man. Other than some residual good deeds Etc. from his Father's legacy. As for Gotham City itself, I'm sure it would remain as corrupt and crime ridden as ever. I'm sure the Bruce Wayne of this universe would be oblivious to it to one degree or another. He would be at least be "removed" from it all. Depending on the continuity of the concept, perhaps one of Gotham's original heros remained or returned to protect her? such as the original Green Lantern? Just my thoughts.

I don't agree. I think that Bruce would have followed in his father's foot steps. He wouldn't be Batman but I think he would have contributed to society, probably be happily married with 2 or 3 kids of his own, and be trying to rid Gotham of as much corruption as he possibly can. I don't think he would be the "billionaire playboy" that he pretends to be, now. The whole point of the billionaire playboy act is to show how Bruce's parent's death affected him as Bruce Wayne, not as Batman. YOu can see everbody thinking If Thomas and Martha had lived Bruce wouldn't have turned into a careless, shallow man, when his shallowness is actually hiding his true pain, blah, blah, blah. Dick would probably have still been orphaned, ect. ect.

I think Bruce would really do the swinging bachelor act for real, and eventually settle down and have a kid or two.
Dick could be in an orphanage for his life, go to college, meet Barbara and marry her.
Gotham would possibly like the Gotham we saw in Begins. Something like after the Cataclysm.
That's about it.

Another WHAT IF? question, but a tad bit off topic.
'What if they used Robin on THE BATMAN instead of Batgirl?'
It'd be a hell of alot better. Robin is an equal to Batman. Batgirl's just a fan who decides to be a hero. You can tell I'm not much of a Batgirl fan.

I highly doubt "The Batman" would go the traditional route with Robin either. At best, they'd ruin the show entirely.[/shadow]
