Title: Nightwing
Story Arc: Year One
Issue Title: Only Robins Have Wings
Writer(s): Scott Beatty & Chuck Dixon
Penciller: Scott McDaniel
Inker: Andy Owens
Editor: Nachie Castro
Major Characters: Robin (Dick Grayson); Batman (Bruce Wayne); Alfred Pennyworth; Clayface I (Matt Hagen).
Story Summary: Dick spends the entire episode dictating a message to Bruce for the second time, this being the second time he has been fired by Bruce. The issue begins as Robin is late for his duties with the Batman because of spending the weekend with the Teen Titans. He shows up and helps defeat Hagen and stops him from kidnapping his kid. After a major fight with Clayface, Batman and Robin drive back in near silence to the Batcave where Alfred is waiting. Alfred presents Dick with a new uniform. Bruce says "This is a WAR, Dick. Robin is my second...my lieutenant. Anything less than TOTAL devotion to this cause is simply WASTING my time. Fine, I'll say it AGAIN...You're FIRED Dick. Get out of my cave." HE then tells Dick to leave the uniform, which he never gets to try on. Bruce then tells Alfred that Dick has been fired.
Review: A good opening issue for the series. It looks promising, and clearly shows why Dick had animosity towards Bruce during the end of his days as Robin and the beginning of his career as Batman. The first couple issues of a story arc are typically well-regarded, and with the guys who originally created the Nightwing on-going on this, I would expect this to be no different. Dan DiDio has clearly stated he expects Nightwing to be a major character in the DCU, taking his place amongst the Pantheon of characters. This issue definitely kicks things into gear for this story, and I for one am excited about the double issues over the next three months.
Rating ****1/2
