It's coming sometime this month, I hear that they are going to allow Miller and Lee have as much time as possible or as they need to put each issue out and if it turns out to be bi-monthly it is still worth the wait.
"I got dibs on top bunk" LoL

Yeah, dccomics.com has #2 scheduled for September, so in all probability, it will be bi-weekly, which is fine with me, it's just that it'll build the suspense. ;D Looking forward to that review!

Wow, it's exciting to see first dibs on a comic review.
A little bitter I didn't think of it myself.

Jim Lee's sketches in wizard are phenomenal! All the characters he was wanting in the story are going to be great if they get into the story. The Question, Hal Jordan, Black Canary, Wonderwoman, zantana...needless to say, great characters. I hope Miller can work some of them into the story. Also another great thing i heard is that it is to be told by Robin's point of view, that will be interesting.

A lot of questions that you might have should be answered in the main topic for this book, located here. I know it's a long thread, but hey, it's a popular topic! ;D

New to the site. Recently returned to comics. Thrilled about AS #1.
Here's the short and sweet: I'm buying #2. But in no rush for it.
Too much Vicki Vale. Too much cheesecake. I didn't like the changes to Dick's origin. I didn't like the level of corruption in the GCPD. It was Sin City level, and too (dare I say it) comic-booky.
But I still love the idea of the story. Lee's pencils are fine. I'm a fan of his, but he's not nearly my favorite Bat-artist.
It's irrelevant, though. If you read this site, you are going to buy the book. And as a trade, this might read like a good opening chapter. As a single issue with two months until the second, it's a bit of a letdown.
High quality presentation, though.
Take care, Chuck

I'm not going to put any spoilers here (actually, there isnt much to spoil), but I thought it was great, art and story. Very little of Bruce Wayne/Batman though. The "origin" of Robin felt a little wierd here, but interesting and I'm anxious to see how this plays out.
There was no point to Vicki Vale in the issue, except to see her in her underwear for 4 pages. I guess that was for the 12-year olds......... and lonely 22-year olds.
Though $3 for a issue is a bit pricey (and is it just me or was every other page an ad!), I am looking forward to the next issue. It was a very strong start and hope it continues to be just as strong in the following issues.
A-/B+

He said "There was no point to Vicki Vale in the issue, except to see her in her underwear for 4 pages. " Uhh...guys, those reviews won't be necessary now. I know all I need to know. Too much Vicki Vale? Too much cheesecake? You have got to be kidding...is anyone alive out there tonight? $3.00 sounds like a bargain to me - I don't care how many ads there are!

It wasn't what i expected. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it IMO served as the teaser of what's to come. It was shorter than i hoped. Jim Lee as always was great and the pics of *ahem* vicky vale were *ahem* quite *ahem* nice. I liked how Miller shows that robin was already adept with different bat tricks and it was nice to see miller use his bats again. 'Til the next issue, whenever the powers that be let it be.

Alive, married, and beyond the need to seen drawn supermodels for SIX pages of an already short comic. Jim draws attractive women, I concede. He did the same in X-Men 268, many moons ago when I got a kick out of that (hint: that was 15 years ago). And there are numerous artists who draw women MUCH better, for that sort of thing.
That said, a few other reviews have peeled a few layers back for me, regarding Vale's scenes to be a feminine counterpoint to Bruce's. Which will work well IF IT'S PAID OFF. Time will tell, won't it?
In short, waiting to see where this goes.
Take care, Chuck

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I do admit that Vale's attire was a bit to gratuitous, but there are worse things to complain about.
In some ways, this book felt more like a "0" issue than it did a #1, but it's really exciting to see a young Dick Grayson and get a sense of what he was capable of doing before Bruce took him in and trained him.
That last shot of Batman holding up Dick Grayson was really awesome. I'd love a poster of that!

This book was amazing from the first page to the last i was thrilled. The art stlye is a brillant peice of work with Jim Lee doing fantastic work with all the characters. The books gradual build up to batman being shown is a fantastic idea, the story is also great very dark and stylish, viki vale is a fantastic character and shows a strong personality, not unlike Rachel in batman begins. Again the main point of this issue is to build up to Batman being shown and its done great, showing the trauma of Robin losing his parents, the corruption of the police force and finally showing us a new kind of batman. Now i knw this book was started before batman begins but it is very evident that it took hints from the film, with batman mentioning how he gets bats around him and what he uses on robins parents murderer. The only big missing from this book is Gordon who is nowhere to be seen, however hopefully the nxt one will show him. All in all the story is fantastic and it feels fresh what all star always wanted to accomplish, how Frank makes the story great although some people will be upset that batman dosnt really appear but i thoguh that was a fantastic way to do it. the art is great work Jim Lee was always my fav for batman and now here he jsut imporves on it with great fresh chracter designs espically batmans which looks very gd. All in all this is a great book and definality a all star

IMO i think Jim Lee's work may improve further in the story. To me it just didn't seem like his best. It was great but i just feel that we're going to see better shortly. And as patronus had said it seems more like a #0 issue. And i believe waiting to show bats until the end was very effective. Plus Vale was pretty funny when wondering why supes is called the man of steel. Never wondered it my self but a very interesting topic indeed.

All Star was great. I liked how they tweaked with Dick's origin a bit and are making it fresh. If they didn't it really wouldn't be worth buying. The story was good and I like how they are going with a corrupt GCPD. Seeing Vicki Vale again was pretty cool, not sure why they had to have her parading around in her underwear, and the last page of the comic gave me the chills

OK, an interesting beginning.
-- Best bit was the final splash page.
-- Not crazy about the Vicki angle. She looked like a million bucks, I tell ya, but she's never been a character that appealed to me. Too much of a Lois ripoff.
-- The pacing didn't feel Millerish, nor did the dialogue (except for the last line). I'm used to his stories having more packed into them and this was just set-up.
-- I have no problem with the changes to Dick's origin. I expected tweaks.
-- The creepiness of the GC cops is interesting, especially in light of Year One. Waiting to see where (Captain?) Gordon fits in.
-- I liked that Lee's Batman face and logo looked like DKR instead of, say, Hush Batman. Helps make this more distinct and more connected to the Millerverse.

Title: Episode One Writer:Frank Miller Artist: Jim Lee Inker:Scott Williams Cover:Jim Lee Character Watch: Batman/Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale Rating: ***** Cover Rating: *****
STORY: The issue starts out with Dick Grayon doing acrobatics thinkig he won't die by what he's doing. Then we see Vicki Vale parading around in her underwear in her apartment talking about how Metropoils has Superman, while they have Batman in Gotham. Then her buzzer rings and it's Alfred coming to take her on her date with Bruce Wayne. The she runs around getting dressed and she's on her way to the circus with Wayne. At the circus, Dick falls and everyone's freaking out except for Bruce. Then Dick pulls out a grappling a tiny hook and saves himself. Then as the crowd cheers for the Flying Graysons, someone shoots both of Dick's parents. Bruce walks out and changes into Batman. He find the guy and throws a batarang covered in snake poison and he's knocked out. Meanwhile, Vicki's gong to check on Dick when a policeman stops her. He says he's in good hands. She badtalks them and then he hits her. They take Dick away, but Vick's not done yet. She takes Alfred's keys to the car follows them, taking Alfred along for the ride. She borrows Alfred's camera. The police stop at Galt's Gulch where they're going to beat him. Then, a whole bunch of bats show up attacking the cops. They try to get out of there and leave Dick. Then, the Batmobile smashes through the police car and Batman grabs Dick and tells him he's been drafted into a war.
Art ***** Best Page: Last Page
Good: Darker Version of Robin's origin Vicki Vale in her underwear. Miller designed Batman
Bad: Not enough Batman. Dick's parents killed by gunshots to the heads.

i for one am not as happy with this one as the rest of you. it was rushed, awkward and overall disappointing. sure, lee's art was great and miller's words were good, but this issue should've been double the length. at least. and what was with the characters repeating themselves all the time?
