Detective Comics #801
"City of Crime" part 1 of 12
Written by David Lapham and Mike Carey
Art by Ramon Bachs and Nathan Massengill and John Lucas
Cover by Lapham
The book opens with the standard intro to Batman's origin..then moves into accounts of multiple criminals or degenerates all around Gotham. Terrible tales of despair told in single image frames.
The actual story in this issue revolves around "The Dealer" and his customer Mickey Gravesly.
Enter Haddie McNeil..a 14 yr old rich girl, neglected by her father, desperate for attention. Bruce meets her at a party being held for a shady new project using misappropriated funding. She blabbers on to him for a few minutes, before he harshly tells her to grow up. Next thing you know, Haddie is dead, a needle stuck in her arm.
Mickey had got her hyped up on drugs to take advantage of her. The OD'd and wound up dead. Mickey runs....he runs right to the dealer. But not before getting in a car accident that leaves him bloody.
He arrives at "the Dealer's" pad only to be put on a tarp and shot. This whole time Batman is chasing after him, hunting him. He winds up at the Dealer's place just as they're carrying out the body. The violence ensues from there. Batman wants to get vengeance for the wretched little girl's death, but a fire blocks away calls his attention before he can really work the Dealer over.
He calls in Tim (Robin III) to to scene. The book ends with accounts of who will die that night in the fire.
This book was pretty lame overall. Not very interesting. Too wordy at some parts, not enough at others. The most interesting aspect to me was the backstory "The Barker", which is about a mysterious carnie murder. There's no bat in that story yet, but its kinda ok.
overall rating...
