Here's a quote from Grant Morrison from NYCC:

A fan asked, "What can you tell us about where you're taking Batman?"

Morrison answered, quickly, "To the grave."

He elaborated, "Pretty much that, just read Batman RIP." After singing the praises of Tony Daniel's art and his Batmobile redesign, Morrison said, "It's breaking down Batman, I kind of wanted to humanize the guy again because he's been such a dick for a while, which is fine because if you were Batman you would be a dick, but underneath all that is poor little Bruce Wayne so I kind of wanted to take it back to that and say that the superman, that powerful character, there were psychological weaknesses that nobody has handled in a long time. It's a total deconstruction of Batman. I wrote the second part of Batman RIP where the bad guys take him down and I kep thinking, 'How does he come back from this?' And I don't know, nobody's ever done this before." He also teased, "When we find out the identity of the villain, it's possibly the most shocking Batman reveal in 70 years."

Any guesses who the villain will be?

And after RIP:

Does "Batman R.I.P." tie-in to Final Crisis? Morrison said that after "R.I.P." there will be a two-part story that “fits in” to Final Crisis, and is “kind of the last Batman story in a way.”

well knowing Morrison, and the fact that he keeps saying he wants to deconstruct Batman and what not, and the fact that he cares little for what the fans think and how he was the one who wanted Nightwing to die in Infinite Crisis, i'd say it's Nightwing. most of the events of Kingdom Come have come to pass in some way, and Jason Todd isnt Red Robin anymore. i really hope not though. it could also be Catwoman, she is back to being a villain again and her series is coming to an end. if it's not something shocking like he's making it out to be, then it's something very easy or predictable like Jason Todd or Hush. i can also see it being something stupid too, like we'll find out that Batman had a brother or sister and that's who it is, or a Batman from an alternate Earth. we'll just have to wait and see.
