CATWOMAN #53
REVIEW:
This is it! One Year Later (OYL). This point is a new beginning for old readers but THE beginning for new readers. In terms of Catwoman, setting her up in OYL, lets see...
Story: Its One Year Later; Selina Kyle, now named Irena Dubrovna, now has a beautiful baby girl. Because of her havign this daughter, she has given up the role of being Catwoman. It doesn't, ignore the afct that her freind, Holly, has taken the mantle.
For Catwoman comics, I only got one TPB that collected the first issues of this series. That was it. With OYL, I was planning to start buying the comics of her. Like many other OPYL titles, that was a good idea. Not only do you get an arc (of course, what other OYL doesn't?) featuring the old & new Catwomen, but with this issue you get to see a more opened and more romantic and trusting relationship between Selina and Bruce. Hell, if we remember Earth 2, this baby's name is Helena, if thats the case then we know who fathered her on that earth. Maybe....don't jump to conclusions.
To end this, this was a good issue. Despite the fact it was a setup, its still good for old readers and the same goes for new ones. OYL is looking good.

I agree about the Catwoman comic. What turned me onto the comic to begin with in 2002 was the fact that the Feline Fatale had been reworked. I liked how the character had been fleshed out, made to be more real. Issue #53 certainly brings on a whole new perspective on this character. Some old-line Batfans may find fault with this, but the times have changed. This should be one interesting ride!

i've always been a Catwoman fan, this issue was good, but Holly as Catwoman, i dont buy it. i just cant wait to see what happened during the year. i mean she kills Black Mask, and now she has a kid, a new name, and isnt Catwoman anymore. maybe she was with Batman during the year. i look forward to reading more, but Holly does have to go.

Well that guy who was spying on Catwoman, thought of her as Selina. And since he mentions Black Mask, I believe the reason why Selina has a new name is because there is a hit on her. And Holly as Catwoman is so the name can live on and Selian, with a baby, can't become her anymore.

Although I don't read Catwoman, this is my prediction for the end of the OYL story:
Selina figures that Holly isn't strong enough to be Catwoman, so she decides to let Holly take care of her baby so Selina can become Catwoman again. Just my thoughts.

sO wHICH CATWOMEN SHOT BLACK MASK IN THE HEAD AND DID BLACK MASK SURVIVE,BECUASE IF SO HIS FACE HAS BEEN BURNT HES SURVIVED A TALL BUILDING ,THE CLOCK TOWER EXPLOSION AND NOW THIS>Dont get me wrong I love mask but at this rate were going to have to class him as invenrable

Black Mask is totally and completely dead, no way around it. If you look at Catwoman #52 it shows her holding the gun to his face. The next panel is the gun firing, and the next panel is Selina holding the smoking gun at the exact same angle; she didn't wuss out and shoot him in the shoulder or anything.
Furthermore, in Catwoman 54 the GCPD detective who's investigating BM's murder shows Slam a picture of BM with his jaw blown off. We don't actually see his body with a huge gun shot wound in either comic, but that's just because it would be a little too graphic to show a bloody body with the face shot off.
But he's totally dead.
On another note, Holly as Catwoman isn't that bad - for a little while. I agree that Selina has to return sometime. But Holly wore the catwoman suit once before (issue 31?) and it was a fun change of pace. Holly is a good character and Brubaker did a lot to make her interesting. I don't think she'll have trouble holding the mantle of Catwoman - for a while, anyway. I am definitely looking forward to the next several issues.

I was checking out the DC previews for August, and this is what it said for CATWOMAN: The life of Catwoman's child is in danger, and the only person who can save her is Zatanna. But how will Zatanna react when Catwoman needs her to alter more villains' minds? My guess is that she'll have Zatanna whipe the minds of the people who put the hit out on her, and she'll be back as Catwoman, possibly leaving Helena in care of Holly. As for Black Mask, well here's the cover to Man-Bat#5:  BLACK MASK LIVES BABY! BOO YAH! |

Man-Bat is not really in-continuity (with OYL) is it? I wasnt reading it, but isnt it an origin story or something?
If Black Mask survived getting his face blown off that's some lame - not to mention unrealistic - storytelling.

I have two theories on that, one is obvious (even more so given the kid's name), the other less so, but still quite plausible. See if they surprise me.
Anyway Pfeifer's run on Catwoman has been consistently one of the strongest titles month in month out for my money, but even so I'm still not convinced about this new direction. Just see how it plays out I guess...
I will say this though, if Holly stays the new Catwoman (doubtful in my mind) then at least give her her own distinct outfit. It doesn't have to be that different, but it should still be notably her own.
