Part of me just lost interest in this book. In 3 issues, absolutely nothing has happened. Somebody call me in 2009 when they can manage to get enough issues to put in trade paperback and maybe I'll think about buying it.

PLOT:
With Vicki Vale in critical condition, Batman and Grayson reach the batcave. Batman goes out and find out whats going on and gets really mad when Alfred does something to Dick Grayson: gives him something to eat.
REVIEW:
Finally, we get to the Batcave. And what a Batcave it is. Lee’s Batcave shot is spread throughout 6-pages and shown in every detail. I like this cave. It kinda makes me think of it being like the ULTIMATE Batcave. I mean you have the various cars of every era and you have past elements like the cases with ancient armors, kinda like from Batman ’89. And the DKR Batmobile. And then, you have modern elements like the organic Batplane and the huge main batcomputer seen in the post-NML Batcave.
I think this is similar to All Star Superman and its elements. For butt, the Fortress was all Silver Age elements wrapped together nicely in there from the huge door, to the small but extremely heavy key, to the robots. For ASB&R, the Batcave has elements from the start of the modern Batman from O'Neil/Adams era, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis and now.
Before I continue on, I like to go over this time problem of how long Batman & Grayson been in the Batmobile vs. the other scenes with “Six months ago…” and “Fifteen hours ago…”: First off: despite what things Miller has in his writings, he would do things in the make sense realm. Re-reading #3 after Issue 4, I can point out that the Black Canary segment is before the whole storyline and the Clark Kent with the Bat-Napped newspaper is before a certain issue. Not the issues we’re reading and is out now and not in the current point of the story now. Reading the solicits of the only known next two issues, I can safly say the Clark Kent point is before Issue 6.
Let’s go now to the fourth issue…
With this issue, everyone’s dream comes true: the batcave is finally reached and the second half of the story takes place there. Now Superman does appear here but in a cameo role. Just like in the previous issue, the only word he says is “Damn!” now since he will be in the JLA in Issue 6, you mean to tell me you can’t add more lines?! After I though of that, I rethought of him and what Batman wants him to do, which Superman happens to do afterwards and I realize that Superman wouldn’t have anything else to say. Just strange to repeat that one word.
Now time for me for half of my brain to fight over what was the strangest thing in this whole issue: when Batman is about to leave Grayson in the cave, he screams of what he would do now and what if he needs to eat. Batman replies that the cave is big enough for him to sleep and his food will appear. After that line, Grayson sees a bat and a rat. FOOD?!
Okay now, this Batman IS INSANE. I know they want to show why Batman would need a sidekick to bring him out of complete darkness, but why this extreme? And he fights Alfred because he gave Grayson a bacon cheeseburger and fries? Man, he truly is nuts. Batman explains he was going to do something. I don’t what that was. But Alfred said that he chose this life and he doesn’t want the kid to eat something like a rat.
One thing I like to point out was that Batman at one point treats what led to him becoming Batman and what has happened to Dick Grayson as a destiny anyone would be happy to have. But he’s also still hurt from it from another point. A trick is a maybe, but still that shows how insane, crazy and psychotic he is in this. I could say they’re making good ideas of how dark and cold Batman could be which leads to Robin. But whatever his plans are, I hope we get to know what they are soon. Because this title has one enemy: DELAYS. Miller, Lee, Dido, could be anybody that’s the cause but it has to stop.
Overall, this was still good in its own way. Questions unanswered and I hope we get more issues. One more thing: STOP THE DELAYS!
RATING: 7/10

The issue concludes with Batman thinking that the boy is going to screw everything up.

It's not much of an ending blinker. You could'nt tell me that Batman thinks Dick is going to screw everything up? EDIT: He wants Dick to eat a rat? This Batman really is insane. And I like it. >

Well, time for a good news bad news moment: GOOD NEWS: We finally got #4 out after 5 months. BAD NEWS: We have to wait 3 months for #5 in August with #6 in September. Maybe they'll be on time. They delayed #5 for August because of All Star Superman #4 in June and #5 in July. Also, All Star Batman #6 is set for September so maybe DC is doing a new plan to release these titles by having each title release two issues in two months back to back monthly.

I liked this issue. It furthers the story along nicely. The 6 page spread of the batcave was amazing, but unnecessary. Lee could have made a 2 page spread and worked on 4 pages of the next issue!
I got the Lee cover cause I didnt see any Miller covers there. I dont know if it was a 50/50 split. Either way I was fine with it, cause I didn't care too much for either cover.
The solicits at the back of this book have comics from months ago!! Does that mean this was ready then, just not shipped until now??

Well. At last the day has arrived. I got the issue earlier today, with the Lee cover. The comic shop didn't have the Miller cover, but I would have gotten the Lee cover anyway. This issue certainly moved the story along more than #3 did, although there still wasn't much action. Still, I enjoyed it. I loved Lee's Batcave spread, too. I liked seeing Batman get that image of his dead parents when Dick said he was still covered with his parents' blood. I thought it was well done. I feel that the Vicki Vale plotline is completely pointless, especially if she dies. What has she added to the story? Nothing, really. Seeing her walking around in Lingerie in the first issue was nice, but I don't think there was any point in having her in the story. Batman is still acting really crazy, but you just gotta suspend your disbelief when it comes to that. It seems like Batman is supposed to be as crazy as he seems. I guess it's kind of the point of the story: Batman, who has basically lost his humanity, wants Dick to fight crime because he wants a successor, but ultimately he'll come to care about Dick as a son, and that will help the craziness. ;D It's also pretty amusing to see just how crazy Batman can be. Overall, I liked this issue, but like the others, I wanted more to happen in it. I'm sure this story will be a much better read as a whole than as pieces separated by 2-5 months every time. SPOILER WARNING- All Star Batman, I'll tell you exactly how this issue ends. Dick wakes up after dozing off on the floor of the Batcave in a pair of fancy pajamas instead of his dirty circus tights, and finds a cheeseburger and fries, which he devours. Batman grabs Alfred by the collar and demands to know what he's doing. Alfred insists that Dick shouldn't have to eat rats. Batman says that he did, but Alfred says that he chose to live that way. He tells Bats that he isn't his slave, and to let go of him. Batman stalks away, thinking, "Alfred just told me to go take a flying leap. This little brat is going to ruin everything."

Issue 4 pros & cons: (SPOILERS)
Pro - it finally came out! (and the cover date say march, so has this book really been sitting in a warehouse waiting to be shipped for so many months?) Pro - they're out of the batmobile, finally. Pro - Jim Lee draws so pretty. that batcave spread was n*i*c*e.
Con - even considering that this is Frank Miller, the tone is a little over the top. Batman expects Dick to hunt, kill, and eat rats? where did that crap come from?
Overall I definitely liked this issue better than #2 or 3. Still, though, Miller is going a little overboard with the demented Batman thing. Seeing him break into a cop's house and beat information out of him was a little weird, but I can live with it. Leaving Dick to eat rats just seems dumb, though.
By the way, could somebody tell me where the dinosaur in the batcave came from? i've seen it before but I never got the story behind it.

I think the main reason why the story is thought by many as not going farther is ebcause if you look at Miller's work which were as eries (DKR, DKSA & Sin City), each part were released as volumes. All Star Batman & Robin are released as issues and each one has a piece of what a volume would have.
Yeah, I must've not seen it but Batman sees Dick Grayson as a apprentice and almost like a son somewhat. Miller, while showing why Robin is needed for a complete dark Batman, still shows that even Batman has a sorrowful side even when he realizes what he's doing after he hits Grayson and when he thinks back at his parents' death.

True but Batman: Year One was released in single issues and we all know that it turned out to be one of the best, probably top 3 or 5 Batman stories ever told. This is has been a piece of garbage IMO.

By the way, could somebody tell me where the dinosaur in the batcave came from? i've seen it before but I never got the story behind it. thanks to webcrawler I can answer my own question, for anyone who's interested. The dinosaur was from a story in Batman #35 "Dinosaur Island" from www.dcuguide.com/Bm/BmC_008.php --> Murry Hart, the owner of a dinosaur-themed attraction called Dinosaur Island, was found dead and Batman soon discovered that the killer was Hart's business partner Stephan Chase. He confronted Chase at Dinosaur Island, fighting a menageries of animatronic beasts before capturing the murderer. Yet so often, he knew, his efforts were ineffectual. Alfred decides he should collect some momentos of Batman's successes, to remind him that he does make a difference, and the first of these is a robotic dinosaur from Dinosaur Island.

I got it today, and there was one thing no one mentioned. Right before they entered the Batcave,
Dick: When are you going to let me out of this thing? It feels like it's been days!
Batman: Shut up.
And it's funny because most people complain about how long they've been in the Batmobile. It would've been funnier if he said months, considering how long it took to get this out.

There is something I want to point out too. At the end of issue four with the "Next time" preview thing. it says:
Dick Grayson stares into the eyes of the soulless monster who murdered his parents, the executioner's ax in his hands. Will the boy become a detective-or an avenger?
Now this has me worried. Will Dick be with Batman when this happens? Will Batman want Dick to kill him? This has me worried because I don't see how he could let a preteen like Dick to become someone like the person who killed his parents. Two wrongs don't make a right in some cases, and I could consider this as one of them.
