hi everyone, i read some batman comics but i really don't know what to buy now... so what would you suggest me to read next? i have to say i realy like jeph loeb, but i allready have al the batman comics he wrote... but if you could suggest a writer or a story with clues and climaxes as jeph loeb can do... that's the kind of comics i liked by example, i really liked batman hush (writen by one artist, very good story with a great plot) but i didn't liked batman hush returns (different artists and writers, not such a great story *in my opinion, sorry for the folk who like it *) i hope i made clear what i like to read, so any suggestions?

Some of the classics I always tell people to read are The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. I am also a fan of Batman year 1.

I suggest some of the books that helped inspire Batman Begins:
Batman: Year One Batman: Haunted Knight Batman: The Long Halloween Batman: Dark Victory Batman: Hush
And a couple stories that aren't set in continuity are good too: The Dark Knight Returns The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Also I recommend All Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder. A great new series for those getting back into Batman. (Don't believe the negative feedback though)

I liked the "Hush" thread in the Batman comic; it made for great reading! I remember when the thread ended; I had just gone to Rochester, then to Erie, PA.
When it comes to comic book series, I would advise Catwoman and Birds of Prey without any hesitation.

If your looking for some classic Batman saga's take a look at Batman No man's land! Also Batman:Arkham asylum is good a excellent story great art and featuring the best Bat-Baddies in a dark tale of survival! Batman saga books are good to get into if you can make sure you can get them all!!

I agree that Arkham Asylum is very good; It really is an extremely interesting look into the minds of Batman and his foes, but keep in mind that it gets pretty intense, so I'd suggest it only to people with strong constitutions. ;D I consider The Dark Knight Returns to be the greatest Batman story of all time, so you might want to give that a try, as well. Also, Batman: The Killing Joke is probably the best Joker story ever.

If you want to go with someone else other then Batman, Superman for All Seasons is written by Loeb and drawn by Sale. It is a very good read and if you love TLH, DV, and HK then this is up your alley. Also Catwoman When in Rome is by Loeb and Sale and is actually a sequel to TLH. It occurs between TLH and DV so this is a must for any fans of that storyline!

If you like Year One (and who doesn't?) I suggest Matt Wagner's 2 new Dark Moon Rising miniseries. "Batman and the Monster Men" #6 of 6 just came out about 2 months ago; I don't know if you'd find the whole series on the shelves still. "Batman and the Mad Monk" starts in July, I think. These series are sort of considered Batman: Year One-and-a-half, and you totally get that feel from the artwork as well as the storyline. Matt Wagner writes and draws them all and he gives it a great 'early days' kind of atmosphere. Very much worth checking out, although this is before the days of Joker, Riddler, and the big name supervillians.

HUSH was good but I'm one of the few who didn't like the ending. I thought it was too much of a wrap but seeing Infinte Crisis now, it does make sense.
I would also recommend Elseworld titles. They are not Batman continuity, but they are fun reading. I like Gotham by Gaslight, Holy Terror, and Speeding Bullets.

TiVa, if you're into Loeb, then you've got to go with the his three big contributions to the Bat-verse:
1. The Long Halloween - focusing on the demise of the Falcone crime empire and the rise of Batman's gallery of rogues. 2. Dark Victory - Loeb's origin story for Robin and how he came to be the boy wonder. I prefer this book over All-Star Batman & Robin simply because Batman isn't a jerk here. 3. I'm assuming you've read Hush? It was the biggest storyline in Batman a few years back written by your favourite - Loeb. What really makes this book a keeper though is the illustrations by Jim Lee. As much as I enjoy the work of Tim Sale, I haven't seen Batman drawn better by anyone else - Jim Lee made Hush.
Others have suggested reading Frank Miller and I have to say that he is responsible for the 2 greatest Batman stories ever - "Year One" and "The Dark Knight Returns". IMHO Miller is a lot more darker and serious the Loeb. His Batman stories lack the playful end quality you find in Loeb's work. The work is much grittier.

well, first of all i want to thank you all for the big response, i'm reading batman comics for about 2 years now and i'm really getting into it... it's funny to see you guys all mention books that i allready have on my comic shelf... there is: -batman the dark knight returns -batman cataclysm -batman no mans land 1-5 -batman the long halloween -batman dark victory -batman hush -batman hush returns And i ordered batman the haunted knight as you can see, i've read all jeph loeb stories, but i really like the way he sees batman and tells a story, it's easy to read (english isn't what i speak normally i live in belgium...) and that's why i like them so much... great plot, sublime endings, normal conversations and what dasknights said about frank miller, I totally agree i really wanted to read batman year one, but as i had read batman the dark knight returns i have to say i'm not so sure anymore, does the artwork seems like TDKR? and they way the dialogues are, are they also the same als TDKR? cuz i really liked the story, but nah... in 2 weeks i'm going in to finals, but i would like to read a batman comic that can get my mind of those exams, but reading frank millers work... i guess it's even more intense to understand then studing my english is well enough to understand those comics, but in TDKR, those dialogues where LONG, written somewhat difficult for someone who’s mother language isn’t english, the art, it was all so abstractive i thought... so the biggest question is, is Year One, also that way? cuz if it's NOT THE SAME i am allready sure what i'm going to buy next... it's like dasknight said, its much darker, serious, while when i'm reading jeph loebs batmans, it's like looking at a movie... much pleasent reading, chill, relaxed... so if year one IS THE SAME kind of comic as TDKR is, then, could you suggest someone that also tells a somewhat more relaxing story? And again, thanks for the big response.

No, dont worry Tiva YEAR ONE is drawn by David Mazzuchelli The art and dialogue is no where near as intense as TDKR! You have to get used to Miller's art, as you know wat basically is the origin of Batman ,this is easy tofollow and show's the Beginning's of Gordan's role in the Batman(this book is also Gordan year one!) Also This introduce's you to all the victim's of the Hangman murder's in Dark victory! So this is a must to go with Long Hallowean and Dark Victory!! It's a great book!!! Look into the Killing Joke as well !

Check out this list of the best 25 Batman stories ever. 25 Greatest Batman StoriesI think you might like, Batman: War on Crime by Paul Dini. Dini was a writer for the animated series of Batman and his writing on Mad Love was funny. By the way, if you like Loeb's writing why don't you read "Superman for all Seasons"? It's good as wel although the tone is a lot lighter than Batman.

Hey Tiva, You're favorite writer (Loeb) is currently writing Batman/Superman. You may want to look at some Batman/Superman Trade Paper Backs as long as you don't mind reading about Superman along with Batman. thanks again! well i was planning on reading war games, but isn't that again a 5 volume piece? cuz i'm saving those for when i've got money enough, cuz i hate waiting to read how the story goes on... i have informed me about the killing joke when i was reading no mans land and up to then i never heard about the oracle... so i was kinda curious about how and when and stuff like that, but i guess my comic store has to import those from the us... maybe some delivery problem, but it still hasn't been delivered there and they allready ordered it again. and it would be great if you can let me know which new comics that come out, i a huge batman fan and i guess my comic collection will never stop.

thanks a lot for the many replies! i didn't haven't much time to check the forum, but i ordered some early suggestions that you guys gave me and in a week in a week i can go collect the last loeb comic book about batman i didn't had, "haunted knight"... and i think i'm going to buy year one too, cuz it seems like it's a reaaaal classic one... (thanks for the link dasknight, that's perfect!) and i knew loeb did some superman stories, but in fact, they are lighter... and that's the problem with superman, i normally don't like superheroes, i hate X-man, spiderman, every other of them... cuz of their "special powers". superman is a classic one, you can't hate him but he still is that extra-ordinary man who can do everything... that's the reason i'm so attracted to batman, as a child (i was 3 years when my mom made me my first batman cape ) i even refused to watch other hero cartoons, only batman would do... i'm now 21 and still i got that big batman thing going on, so i don't think about buying other stories cuz i mostly got dissapointed just because i am prejudiced against them... and i can't help it... but with superman it's slightly different, i learned to appreciate him cuz he's comming back some times in batman comics (dkr, hush, nml, ...) so i would like to read those batman/superman stories! but is that show still running? cuz i like to read it from the beginning, and not pick up somewhere in the middle of the story (i think loeb has a great story telling, so i don't want to spoil it for myself whenever i can get my hands on that story when it's in a collection book... and thanks about the paul dini thing! didn't knew he has written commics as well! i'm looking at batman tas vol 4 right now (one ep a day, and i'm allways VERY pleased when i see his name when the cartoon begins, in batma tas he was deffinitly the best writer!
