Batwoman as a lesbian isn't really a big deal to many but to the gay community it is just one more step towards acceptance. Sure it may seem tright or little to the straight community but think about it in terms of 5 years ago, or 10, or maybe even 20. There would be no mention of sexuality especially not in gay terms.
Now I wonder how the reactions would be if say Robin were to come out. Would fans go nuts about it or would they dismiss it and say it's ok. Chances are it would be a double standard. There is nothing wrong with being a lesbian...but you can't be a gay male in the comics world.
Obsidian briefly showed himself to be gay and boom, they cut his storyline out shortly thereafter...no mention of it again. If I remember even Kyle Rayner was slated to be bi-sexual at one point and that was scratched off as well.
SO I applaud DC for making efforts towards gay acceptance. One hero at a time.
