PLOT:
One year after Wonder Woman's last appearence; Giganta, Cheetah (in human form) & Doctor Psycho hold Steve Trevor hostage. Their demand": they want Diana to come out of hiding. Wonder Woman comes in to the picture, but its not Princess Diana, its Donna Troy. As she fights the villians, Nemesis gets a new bodyground: Diana Prince.
REVIEW:
#226 ended the Vol. 2 title of Wonder Woman. I remember when this was announced that her title was going to be canned, Infinite Crisis-related or not, that people thought DC had balls to cancelled a superheroine that was the first superheroine ever and everyone knew her as above like Superman and Batman (hence DC's Big Three). I thought it was bad to cancel her, maybe because the last of her issues was the first time I was collecting the comics. But I was remembered that DC did this when they ended Vol. 1 due to Crisis of Infinite Earths and started Vol. 2. And sure enough, same thing happened here. Here is Vol. 3!
This arc, as many alway knows, is a OYL, or OYL-type, arc. It relates back to Infinite Crisis as she left everything behind, just like Superman (somewhat) and just like Batman to refind herself, like the others. Now "UP, UP & AWAY" brings back Superman and "FACE THE FACE" brings back Batman. "WHO IS WONDER WOMAN?" does the same thing for Wonder Woman. Sorta.
The NEW Wonder Woman is Donna Troy. I thought they would be kidding as many didn't want someone else to wear the costume but they weren't. Now as I think of it; when Donna Troy first appeared, that story was "WHO IS DONNA TROY?" and this is the same but with "WONDER WOMAN" instead. I guess we should've put two and two together. I wondered at first if this cover that would prolly be the cover to the TPB collecting the arc would give people (who didn't read this) the wrong impression but Donna and Diana look alike, and the cover to #1 has a Diana-essence to me and thats her eyebrows. So we're okay.
Back to the issue...
First thing new is the costume, well some of it. The "W" shaped symbol on her chest is now shaped as an eagle. Its a little bigger as well. Also, she now wears a "W" shaped belt. Second new is Steve Trevor. Now, Post-Crisis he was old, now Post-IC he is young. I do seem to remember that Steve Trevor had a son but my memory is really messy on that so might not be the case. Also, modern (before or now) or not, his history was being the first man to set foot on Paradise Island is said here. Now, going back to the arc back in Wonder Woman Vol. 2's early days, that might be true anyways but I thought I should point it out. Anyway; Steve Trevor is young.
For the villians: Doctor Psycho had already appeared in Manhunter OYL so his appearence was nothing new (except the bald head). Giganta was the same: I like her new outfit. Cheetah was the new one. Pre-Crisis: she was a human being who had cheetah-like powers and wore a costume. Post-Crisis: she was a human-cheetah hybrid. Now Post-IC: she's back as she was Pre-Crisis. Her new outfit sorta models after Wonder Woman's and her new power (maybe old, so bear with me) is to control real-like Cheetahs.
Now on the stars: Diana aka Diana Prince: OLD Wonder Woman & Donna Troy NEW Wonder Woman.
To get this out of the way, as it is short: Diana only appears in the last shot. What she is doing right now and her new role OYL isn't known yet. I do like to point out like like the other females in this book: I also like her outfit as well. It reminds me of the outfits Lynda Carter wore in the Wonder Woman TV show and its said she is an agent and that is shown with the belt and the outfit as well. Agent of what and why? Wait and see and we'll know.
Now for Donna Troy. She doesn't wear a Wonder Woman outfit, she wears the battle armor some may remember from the Our Worlds at War or more from Kingdom Come. Only without the wings and instead with a cape Wonder Woman (Diana) always wore with it when needed. How is she as Wonder Woman? She is fine. Like I said, she and Diana look alike and they're sisters so she would have to be similar anyways. Her in the role with Diana gone for a year makes her more Wonder Woman than Donna Troy and I sense less of who Donna normally is as she seems more into playing her sister. Since she is still Donna in 52, one wonders how long has she been as the Amazing Amazon. Since Internal Affairs know she has been wearing the costume, its been awhile. But since the villians want Diana back so badly, she might've been like this maybe for a short while. I don't know, hopefully we'll know more as I'm not gettign 52 at all.
Overall: this was nice to see her back. Not just Donna Troy, or the minor appearebce of Diana again at the end, but Wonder Woman in general. She's too good of a characetr to cancel and she is a role model of every woman of the planet.
WELCOME BACK, GIRL!
RATING: 8/10
