POSSIBLE SLIGHT SPOILERS ***************
Man,do I really miss Denny O'neil. As a kid I really didnt pay much attention to who edited or wrote my favorite funnybooks-I just read 'em and if they were good I bought more of 'em. It was only after I grew up that I realized what an impact Denny O'neil had on my love of the DC Universe. It seems like Mr. O'neil was either the writer or the editor of all my favorite DC stories and now he's written a new DCU novel about The Question called Helltown.
Helltown is basically the Question 5 issue mini-series that O'neil wrote years ago updated and expanded and turned into a novel-much like he did with the novelization of Knightfall. And its good-really good. This is not Ditkos version of The Question or the Fox Mulder/Conspiracy nut version from JLU-this is definitey Denny O'neils version of the character which he wrote for quite a few issues,if I remember correctly. We get the whole origin story of Vic Sage and how he was trained/funded by the likes of Richard Dragon,Lady Shiva, and Batman himself.Although I enjoyed reading about The Question,it was the scenes with Batman and Alfred that made me miss Denny the most-oh how I wish he was still an editor/writer at DC! Denny O'neil "gets" Batman like nobody else.
I did have a few minor complaints-the ending felt a little rushed and there were some typos that made the narrative hard to follow(one little girl named Jackie is called Ashley for a few pages with no explanation)but all in all I really enjoyed this book.I picked it up yesterday evening and stayed up all night reading it....oddly enough, large parts of the book take place on Halloween and the day after so it was quite timely. If you're a fan of The Question or just a fan of Denny O'neil I urge you to pick this one up...maybe if it sells well enough DC and Warner books will get the hint and convince Mr. O'neil to write many more such novels!
