Mr. Manning is the writer on Justice League Adventures #14
---------------------
LoG: Your story in Justice League Adventures #14 was fantastic. What was your primary inspiration for the plot? Has Aquaman been a favorite character of yours in the past?
Matthew K. Manning: As far as Aquaman is concerned, my real inspiration was the Peter David
run. Peter gave Aquaman a real edge, and built an essentially silly character into a classic hero deserving of icon status. I tried to go with that interpretation of Aquaman, along with what Bruce Timm did with him on
both the Superman and Justice League shows.
LoG: Are you a fan of the animated Batman toons? Justice League? Teen Titans?
Matthew K. Manning: I think I'm a little bit too much of a fan. I've been taping Batman since
its debut and just followed suit with the rest of the shows. And now that I'm writing for the Justice League Adventures book, my little hobby has turned into a pretty invaluable resource. So see, there you have it.
Sometimes being bitten by the fanboy bug can help pay off your credit card bills.
LoG: Do you collect Batman toys or merchandise? If so, what types?
Matthew K. Manning: I guess this is where I out myself as a Batman fanatic. With a few holes
here and there, I pretty much have every Batman related action figure ever made since the Super Powers line. But since my girlfriend is too pretty for
me anyway, and since I don't need 500 toys or so cluttering up our apartment and giving her more reason to question our relationship, the majority of my
obsessive compulsive collection is collecting dust at my parent's home in Michigan while only the DC Direct figures live with us here in Brooklyn.
LoG: Do you have a favorite bat-villain?
Matthew K. Manning: Ra's Al Ghul. I grew up idolizing Denny O'Neil and wanting to steal
his job from him. I still have a long way to go.
LoG: We know of an upcoming Justice League Adventures issue that you've written, which is currently being pencilled. Can you tell us anything about the premise of the issue?
Matthew K. Manning: Actually I just saw the completed pencils. Tim Levins is the artist, and
the book looks literally amazing. In the story, Batman has gone missing, and Robin has to team up with the Justice League to track him down. I think this story easily tops my last issue and I know Batman fans won't be let down.
LoG: Any other Batman related projects on the horizon?
Matthew K. Manning: Besides my first issue of Justice League being reprinted in the second Justice League Adventures Digest this January, not anything Batman just yet. Right now I'm busy on a few comics for Meathaus Press, a great yearly anthology book drawn by some of the best artists working in comics right now. Guys like Batgirl's James Jean and Caper's Farel Dalrymple. I just finished up a special for them called For Best Results: Do Not Open, and I'm currently working on my entry for their eighth annual with penciller Robert Donnelly. These guys are doing really amazing work and I encourage anyone who likes the comic book medium to check out www.meathaus.com. You can also feel free to visit www.matthewkmanning.com for a few free online comics and my latest info.
