Mr. Bigley has been the artist on a number of animated Batman figure packages, as well as trading cards and the boxes for the Batman: The Animated Series McDonald's promotion!
--------------------
LoG: Have you ever looked at a neon batman variant that you've been commissioned to do the card art for, and asked yourself how can I possibly make this look worth purchasing?
Al Bigley: Well, no, that wasn't my problem, really! I had to depict what they already came up with and show the figure in a dynamic pose and using it's prop or demonstrating it's "action!" I never really thought, "Why ANOTHER green Batman variant?" I knew that that's what the smaller kids wanted!
LoG: Which piece of your bat-art are you most fond of?
Al Bigley:I really like how "Machine Gun Joker" and "Harley Quinn" came out. They were inked, not by Mike DeCarlo(the usual inker for the merchandise), but by Dave Cooper, who gave them a meaner and slicker edge!
LoG: Approximately how long did it take you to complete the artwork on a Batman figure?
Al Bigley:About 2-3 hours! Kenner would send a sketch, very rough, with the prototype, and I whiped it into shape!
LoG: We've discussed that you collect Batman merchandise. Do one or two particular items in your collection stand out to you as being pinnacles?
Al Bigley:I have some of the old Mego items I grew up with, as well as a nice Irv Novick BRAVE & THE BOLD Batman page of original art. I also like some of the newer stuff, like the DC Direct figures, or the "1939 Batman" figure that came with the Masterpiece Set! I've also gotten into assembling the resin kits, and have done kits of the Adam West Batman, TV Catwoman and Batgirl, and am working on a Gorshin Riddler!
LoG: Have you been collecting any of the new Mattel Batman merchandise? If so, what are your opinions of it?
Al Bigley:I've seen it, but I really don't care for the Jim Lee stuff, so....Just doens't hit me, ya know?
LoG: You did the artwork for the Animated Batman McDonald's promotion in the early 1990's...was it at all intimidating to know that millions of people would see that piece?
Al Bigley:Sorta! Once again I had to really just take the usual stuff into consideration...Leave room for type...make sure the games work...keep characters on style...I got a kick out of seeing the boxes on the national TV spots!
