LOG has posted our exclusive interview with Batman Strikes art newcomer Sanford Greene! You'll be seeing a lot of Sanford in the coming year!
*******************
LOG: Your artwork has a very 'animated' feel to it. It almost appears as still frames from existing animation at times, which I really enjoy. I think it goes without saying that you're a fan of anime...but what do you feel has influenced your art style in this direction?
SANFORD: Your right. I am very much into anime & animation. But I am also influenced by urban culture such as graffiti.
LOG: How did you get started in the comics biz?
SANFORD: Attending comic conventions like just about every one else!!! I went one of the first Wizard Worlds in Chicago and walked away with some fill-in work with Dark Horse.
LOG: What led to the opportunities you're currently receiving on the Johnny DC comic titles? Was it any specific project that got you noticed for this job?
SANFORD: I went to the DC offices in New York last year and got a chance to show my stuff around. It really helped because I got a chance to meet most of the editors face to face.
LOG: Do you consider yourself a Batman or Dc Comics fan? Were there any characters or titles that influenced you growing up?
SANFORD: Defiantly a Batman fan!!! I first started reading a lot marvel, but shortly there after I got my first DC title. " Crisis of Infinite Earths " George Perez floored me with all that awesome detail!!! I studied his work for hours wondering how he got all those panels on one page!!!
LOG: Had you seen The Batman prior to landing the gig on Batman Strikes? How many episodes have you seen now? What are your thoughts on the show?
SANFORD: I love the show!!! I try to grab my cereal every saturday morning and plop in front of the tv to catch it!!! Jeff Matsuda is a good friend of mine and we would talk on occasion about the process of character designing for the show. I really admire the innovation of the designs. Really fun stuff!!!
LOG: Do you have a favorite of the new character designs featured on The Batman? Any characters you're hoping to be able to draw in the future?
SANFORD: I really dig the new Joker. I know a lot of people don't like that version but I think it's a really cool design. I also love the clay face design. The Riddler is nice as well!!!
LOG: What other DC projects do you have coming up in the future?
SANFORD: I am currently splitting cover duties with my buddy Dave McCaig and I
am also doing many issues of the upcoming Legion of Superheros comic,
based on the successful animated series.
A HUGE thanks to Sanford for taking the time to chat with us. You can also interact with Sanford on our official forum. You'll be hearing a lot more from him in the future!
