SOOOO happy I bought those JL C3 playsets! These are all winners! Reid, could you explain how the DCD association w/ Art Asylum will affect the production of these over the Marvel MMs. In addition, how does the licensing work. I always figured AA licensed the Marvel characters. In this case, did DCD "sub contract AA to make them ?

These are being made through an agreement with DC Direct whereas the Marvel line is a licensing agreement between Art Asylum, Marvel and Diamond Select Toys.
Good points to consider:
This is a totally different license agreement = opportunity to do larger scale figures, such as Croc, Bane, Ares, Braniac, etc.
No building block requirement, which was the primary reason for the failure of the C3 line. Funny, people actually wanted the toys they purchased to stay together without glue...I can't imagine why the line didn't succeed.
It looks like there will be accessories with the figures - Kryptonite, hammer, power battery, Bat-cuffs, Skeets, Blue Beetle's BB gun, etc
This line is 'replacing' Pocket Superheroes - that line had great variety and I hope that the new 'mates line will continue in that vein.
They're coming from DC Direct. This means they're pretty sure bets to be out. Thankfully, Art Asylum doesn't have to shop the line around like they did with Batman Begins C3 - because we all know how well that worked.
Points of concern:
Endless Batman/Superman repaints could harm the future potential of the line. DST isn't involved, so this could be a false alarm... but with 2 Batman and 2 Superman figs slated for the first 3 waves, my hopes aren't very high in this regard. Not to mention all the other Batman figs we already have from C3.
Price point? I'm guessing, since these are a DC Direct product, that they'll be a comic shop/specialty retailer only line. While this helps in one respect - ability to do lesser known characters - it could hurt the wallet due to the limited availablility of the line. I'm anticipating a $9.99 price point, but don't quote me on that (unless I'm right...). ;D

All excellent points, Reid. Thanks for filling in the blanks. Out of curiosity, is there a reason that they're going w/ the "classic, iconic" looks on GL, Ga, Aquaman & Robin and using the Ted Koed Beetle. Kudos to them for doing the fan favorite (bronze age?)classic looks so I'm not complaining, just curious. One last question....why are we the only ones posting on this thread? People, this is going to be sooooooo cool!

AA has the license to do the 'comic' versions of these characters - no movies, no 'toons, just comic versions.
As far as the Robin and Beetle versions, I'm guessing that since they've already done a Robin for C3, they wanted to do a different version for this line. As far as Ted, ?? probably because he's more recognizable than the new Beetle? Or it could be because he's a natural pairing with Booster.
Iron Cow did the design work on these. We'll have to ask him when he's around.

THANK YOU REID AND IC!! I'm a very happy Geek right now!
You make some great observations too... I share the same concerns. The biggest being the final price point. That and being cornered into buying regular and undoubtedly less and less appealing variants of Bats and Supes to get the more obscure characters. Traditional two-packs ala Marvel's shouldnt be anymore than a semi *reasonable $9.99, but under the various circumstances, I can easily see them running between $12-15 Each. Still thrilled to death and gonna stay optimystic.

Nice pics and information Reideen1313, definately a little more information than on AA's site . I'm wondering if these will be in the same scale as the previous C3 line myself Hopefully the heroes are in the same scale as the C3 and some of the villains are slightly larger, especially Aries, Croc and Brainiac ;D I've been waiting for this news since the demise of the C3 line

Just thought of another question. Will these be blister packed or boxed like the Marvels? That, I don't know. Sorry. IIRC, the reason that AA moved away from the blisters was due to cost, but the Street Fighter 'mates have returned to blister packages, so it's anybody's guess. Personally, I prefer the boxes - they have better art and I can keep the package to store the figures in later.

I also started liking the idea that I didn't have to stand there checking which had the absolute best paint job. AA regained my confidence over the past couple of years w/ their latest Marvel waves. The QC has gotten much better IMO. Another question, how will these be sold? Are the sets going to be available to retailers as individual units or, like the Marvels, in cases only?

I have to say, I prefer the blister packaging, and so do most retailers. AA packed in oodles of figures with wrong or missing parts. Such mistakes can't been seen from inside a box, and requires the purchaser to go home home, open it, and then have the issue of returning an opened item. With blisters the hassles are much smaller for consumers and retailers.
Of course, AA could just get 'em right the first time... Ha! I'm so funny!

I have heard that the BSG and Marvel Minimates will be hitting retail again. From what we've been told on the AA side, this is DCD's baby. Like Reideen1313, I'm hoping that it's the carded, not blister for the same reason.

Simply based on my past history dealing with Diamond, I'm guessing they'll be sold to retailers by the case. I can't imagine DC Direct allowing retailers to place, say, 5 orders for a Superman/Lex set and 1 order for a Joker/Harley set. They wouldn't be able to manufacture to order like that.

Ultimately I dont really care cause I'm just too dang glad they're even coming! I do hope they reach general retail too.

I've found them up for presale online. The price per set is $8.99. There are NO variants advertised. ;D (Funny, didn't see that info posted either at AA or DC's boards...)

If they stick to Iron Cows designs the'll be amazing. PJ Thanks PJ (and everyone else!) Just to clear up some stuff, this was definitely a *team* effort. I was working with an in-house designer, the production manager, etc, so it's not really fair to them to say these are "Iron-Cow" designs. But, with pieces like Luthor, Ares, Brainiac, and a few others, you can say they're *mostly* ICP designs! Anyway, due to confidentiality agreements, I can't really discuss the project, but I can tell you that I'm extremely excited about what's in the pipe for this line. Obviously stuff might change until these guys are actually in store, but some of the best stuff is still yet to be announced. It's been a fantastic opportunity for me these past few months, and I'm just as eager to see these guys on the shelves myself! Matt aka Iron-Cow
