Hey, is anybody here a fan of alternative-history books? I'm a fan of Harry Turtledove's How Few Remain series, which is a world where the Confederate States of America won the American Civil War. Here's a site that gives you a list of just about any/ every alternative history "what-if" book ever made if you're interested... www.uchronia.net/Any thoughts? Comment? Favorite series that you've read/ like to share?

I remember trying to read the first book of World War and thinking this should be real good. I would think to myself what would happen if the world powers had to work together instead of fighting each other. Unfortunately I found the book boring and slow. I also didn't find the lizards a very threatening enemy. It's a shame because I wanted to like the book. It was a while ago and I couldn't even finish half of it. I still think it is a great premise for a story.

Yeah, I could never really get into the World War series of books...I just stuck with the How Few Remain series, and a stand-alone book which still scares the pudding out of me In the Prescence of Mine Enemies, where the Nazis won WWII and it's 2040 (? Either that or 2020?)A.D.

yeah alternative history can be very interesting.I always liked that DC elsworlds story where Supes helped the British put down the American war of Independence-now the Idea horrified me for obvious reasons but I found it a compelling read

Has anyone here read the Elseworlds book Gotham By Gaslight, or, the Harry Hudini sequel?

Oh yes. I'm sure most of us here have read or at least know of GBGL? To me its one of the classic elseworld tales (not to mention one of the first). Off the top of my head, I cant recall any specifics of the Houdini book, but I did read it and wanna say I remember it was decent to pretty good? MOst elseworld book (durring their hayday), usually ran between quite good or quite dissapointing.

I have 'Bullets' too...I'm telling you as one fan to the other, that the Elseworlds books (for the most part) are excellent, because they allow the people working on them to create something that can be ground-breaking, or, a new twist on an old icon; like Superman landing in the former Soviet Union, or, (this is one of my favorites) Green Lantern: Evil's Might...Actually, it is the first... ;D I found that/ this out the other day from my father, who is, basically, an Elseworlds-exclusive collector...

It could depend on your perspective BlackMask... (not that it matters at all lol) "Gotham By Gaslight" was (I believe / agree) the first such book to wear the formal "Elseworlds" brand.. there had been similar "what if" type stories prior to it. I believe DC actually considers "Son of the Demon" to be the first "real" or modern Elseworlds tale? or at very least, the inspiration for the formal series / concept? Just some trivia

Yeah, now that you mention it, Son of the Demon could be considered the first Elseworlds book...The first one to use the logo, I think, was GBGL, though...I was aware that DC, and especially Marvel, had/ have been doing "what-if's" for some time now; I remember the "What If" line that Marvel did for years, until they cancelled it...

Just finished glancing through it...It's on my TPB shelf near my collection; the full title is "Batman / Houdini : The Devil's Workshop"...And it's about, well, a team-up between Houdini and Batman against "Smiling Jack" (The Joker) and vampires...It's actually a great read (not the best, but, at least it isn't like the 90's EXTREME! books that flooded the market), and is beautifully painted, IMO...
