What's your favorite episode from the 1st Season/ volume of the Batman: The Animated Series DVDS? For me, I'm torn between the Two-Face/ Clayface 2-parters, but, the Mad Hatter episode has become my new favorite because of Roddy McDowell's vocal performance; for me, he IS the Mad Hatter...
I'm probably going to go with Feat of Clay, Part II, because it features some of WB's finest animation (the end "death" sequence), and is one of the few that I can vividly recall from my memories as a young boy...Ron Pearlman's Clayface voice IS Clayface whenever I watch it...Scary to watch at a young age, but, ultimately making for an intriguing episode, and a villain that I can feel sorry/ pity for...
What's your favorite episode, and why is it your favorite?

[shadow=purple,left,300]This was a hard decision for me. I voted for "Heart of Ice" because it's responsible for the reason why Mr. Freeze ranks on my list of favorite villains. They took a Z-lister and made him a top-notch, tragic character. You sympathize with him. That's very rare, especially nowadays in animation.
I also thought "Feat of Clay," "Two-Face," "Dreams in Darkness" and "The Last Laugh" were great episodes.[/shadow]

Also you deserve a Hero for 3 GREAT THREADS! Thanks, I appreciate it! I just wanted to find out which episodes were the favorites of the fans, to understand what they like in a Batman cartoon...And, I checked the older threads, and nothing like this'd ever been done (according to what I read), so, I felt that it was time to break new ground, so-to-speak...

I've also got to say Heart of Ice, a superb and unique work, which transformed the origin of Mr. Freeze wonderfully. Other favorites of mine are Two-Face and Feat of Clay, both because of their own unique tragicnesses.

From what I'm/ I've been gathering from here [on these message boards/ forums] and off-line, the fans really loved 3 distinct episodes from the 1st season; Two-Face (both parts, but, then again, how else would/ could you watch them? ;D ), the Clayface episodes, and the one that established "Mr.Zero" as the Emmy-award winning Mr. Freeze, "Heart of Ice"...

Twoface Part 1 was tempting, but I voted for Appointment in Crime Alley. When I first saw the episode (on DVD cause I missed it when it was on TV) I forgot that I was watching a cartoon. It's the type of episode that Superman, X-Men and Spider-Man could not have pulled off even if they wanted to.

Regarding the last part; excellent comment regarding the quality...I hero you...

I feel it's just such a great story and it doesn't feel like I'm watching a cartoon at all, it feels more like a mini-movie.

Heart of Ice is one of the best Batman stories out there. I love the ending. FREEZE: Vengeance... BATMAN: No. Justice. And then later, to Boyle BATMAN: Good night...humanitarian... I just love that bitter, yet monotone delivery.
What's also cool about this episode is that Harley and Joker are already together. Mark "The Joker" Hamill does the voice of Ferris Boyle (if you couldn't tell by his delivery of "We're willing to listen" in the beginning) and there's that one scene when Bruce is visiting him and Boyle's secretary calls in. And of course that secretary's voice sounds like Arleen "Harley Quinn" Sorkin. I thought that was really cool.
An honorable mention has got to go to Appointment in Crime Alley. Great character depth, more insight into Bruce's past, and a cool way to show that Batman is truly a hero and not just a vigilante.

Anyone else here like the episode "Prophecy Of Doom"? I loved this episode because of Nostromos' "psychic predictions" involving "cosmic planes...etc..." because it, later in life, reminded me of the media blizzard of information that appeared towards the end of 1999 when groups the world-over predicted that the "world will end on the new millenium"...
That, and this episode involved giant "props" (The rotating solar-system diorama), which reminds me of the some-what ridiculous/ hilarious stories set (mainly) in the late 40's/ 50's where you had things like Two-Face's Giant Penny, or, The Joker's enormous Jack-in-the -Boxes...

I never thought about the episode in that light before; I love it mainly because it reminds me of, IMO, the bogus-show "Crossing Over with John Edwards"...The best parody, once again, IMO, came from Family Guy.

hands down Joker's Favor
1) Harley's Debut 2) this conversation
Mr. J- "Okay, Chaz, when Harley knocks on the door three times, you open it." Charlie- "And?" Mr. J- "That's it." Charlie- "Wait. That's the favor? You called me here just to open a door?" Mr. J- "look at the size of that cake, man! She can't open the door and push it in all at once! THINK!

The Cat and the Claw. Period. It's embarrassing to remember how many times my little sisters and I acted that episode and Cat Scratch Fever out, lol.

I like the Clock King episode. Temple Fugate is a great character. There was depth to that story. Someone with OCD who changes their routine spells out disaster. Just remember "3:15!"

I go with The Last Laugh. In my opinion, this is the best Joker story ever told in any medium. I remembered this one from when I was a kid. That robot, Capt. Clown, was really cool. Other good ones were Mad as a Hatter, Vendetta, Forgotten, Heart of Ice, Beware of the Gray Ghost, Feat of Clay (both parts), The Clock King, and Dreams in the Darkness.

this was really, really tough. I ended up choosing Two-Face pt.1. This was the first episode of TAS i saw and it amazed me. It was like watching an hour long story and it only lasted 23 minutes. That was one of the main things that always got me with this show was the pacing. They also made this such a tragic story for it being a cartoon.

I voted for Heart of Ice simply because it made Mr. Freeze a valuable villian. I also thought Leather Wings deserved recogintion along with Two-Face and Clay Face episodes.

I simply CANNOT and WILL NOT pick on the grounds that I simply ADORE just too many of them!
Starting off:
-On Leather Wings - the debut episode of BTAS, so it just HAS to be recognized and valued, not to mention I think some said before that it has beautiful animation being done - and it really does. That part where Man-Bat is flying Batman all over hte Police Blimp was just - breath taking! -Christmas with the Joker, simply cracktastic! -P.O.V. Here we finalyl get to interact more with the GCPD - such as Bullock (I know he gives Bats a hard time and everything but i think he's just soo funny and real hard butt), a rookie, and Montoya (and I'm IN LOVE with Montoya - OYE CHICA REPRESENTT!!1) and basically as I've mentioned before I just love to watch the role of dominant women in the comic world and I think Montoya really just poppped out her to come and save the day! -Two-Face (pt.1 and 2) was simply - fantastic! I think this is another episode that got BTAS the mourning Emmy cartoon award or something. In any casseee - the concept was brilliant, the part where Bruce has that dream sequence and at hte end of it says that he wants ot save Dent just really touched my heart - and also near hte ending with that beautiful quote Two-Face says - "Divine Dichotomy." Really it was brilliant! -I've Got Batman in my Basement, Batman episodes do get to be a little grim at times, I love the idea of this and the endding part where the boy mentions his mom is single...lmaao! Classic, every little boy's (or little girl's) fondest wish - to meet a superhero in person! - Heart of Ice, a straight foward character developer episode. We really feel Mr.Freeze's sorrow and heart felt compassion even though he's suppose ot be an "emotionless" and "cold-hearted" character. I think somewhere in the BTAS commentary they mentioned something along the lines of - even though he's suppose to be the most emotionally distant character, in actuallity he's probably ythe one ALWAYS lashing out because of his feelings, his feelings are so overwhelming its almost a contrast to Batman's own "emotionless" self. -Joker's Favor, someone mentioned above: Debut of Harley Quinn. Of course here she starts off as nothing more then a simple hench wench (eventually her role in Joker's life takes a much more serious tone then i think either Dini or Timm couldve ever imagined). Not to mention it also further points out Joker's maniacl tendencies and just really weirdo schemes and such. I think it also kinda parallels to Laughing Fish. In this one he seeks out a favor from a guy who cut him in traffic two years later - basically harassing his butt! And in laughing fish he seeks to get a patent on a natural resource! lol! - Mad as a Hatter, Jervis neevr gets enough attention, and I think all the parts where Hatter does get his episode time it's either really good or really dismissive. In any case, this is one of the really good ones, his debut and back story as well as his intense fixation on everything relating to Wonderland. Though I think it would've been a little deeper if they had explained his fascination to Wonderland.

I'm surprised that no-one voted for "Beware the Gray Ghost" yet, so I did. It showed that there was something besides vengeance driving Batman; he remembered a hero from his childhood, and drew inspiration from that. And using Adam West as Simon Trent was brilliant; Trent's life so paralleled what West had to deal with.
