What's the poop on this issue, Chris? It's not one of mine -- who's the writer, what's the one-sentence plot?

What, you can't wait for the solicitation? Fine. The script is by James Peaty, and the story involves Harley Quinn capturing the Batman, putting the pressure on Robin to turn detective, find the Dark Knight and rescue him.

I don't want to be stupid writers, but why do you now always the same villain, in a issue before you've see riddler, and poison ivy, and now by number 38 poison ivy, and by number 40 again riddler, and then there's another poison iy story, with harley quin, and then there's again harley quin, so can you please do some more different villains, but the riddler is my favorite villian, so go on with riddler

I have no say in the order that the various stories in development get placed in the schedule, but I agree that the villains could be spaced out a bit more. We've had a ton of Poison Ivy stories, and now we're getting Harley twice in three issues. It's been ages since we've had a Catwoman story, and there hasn't been a proper Scarface story since issue five! Unfortunately due to stories being given to fill-in artists I've recently missed out on drawing Riddler and Bane stories, which is a big disappointment to me as they are among my favorite villains to draw.

I've actually written three Poison Ivy stories in a short amount of time, because there were things about her character I wanted to explore. One story ran (#38) another is coming (#41) and the other is unscheduled but will be out in 2008.
But I try to vary up the villains. So far I've written stories featuring Catwoman, Joker, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Manbat, Black Mask and Killer Croc. Not all have appeared yet, of course.

I understand, and then, you used all the villains in one story!

Part of the trouble is that there is a pool of contributing writers who are all developing their individual ideas, and stories are approved by the editor (Nachie Castro) and scheduled based on when they are ready and other factors. Unfortunately this means that there isn't much of a comprehensive arc of flow of the stories from issue to issue. The stories Russell is writing aren't coordinated with anything being developed by J Torres, Jai Nitz, Matt Manning, Josh Elder or others.

<<Unfortunately this means that there isn't much of a comprehensive arc of flow of the stories from issue to issue.>>
On the other hand, from a writer's perspective, a series of done-in-one stories makes writing easier -- you don't have to worry much about continuity and what other writers are planning.
It's also good for the young reader who can pick up any issue without feeling like they're jumping on in Part 4 of a 12-part arc.

I wasn't advocating for interconnected, multi issue plots like the DCU books. But without a coherent multi-issue plan, you don't have a sense of balance to the rotation of villains, the use of the supporting characters, or other plot elements. There's no writing saying "I had Robin screw up last issue and learn a lesson from it. Let's show him still thinking that way this issue," or "Hey, I've gone three issues without using Batgirl. Let's use her in this one."

My five year old son loves it when I take him to the comic store after school to pick up the monthly issue of Batman Strikes. I actually appreciate the fact that each book is its own isolated story with anecdote.
My son and I love cover #2 as it shows Robin taking action, as opposed to simply reacting (panic?) to the scenerio playing out in front of him. Keep up the great work!

No problem! Thanks for being involved in the forums and special thanks to Matt for providing a venue.
I don't have any type of long-standing infatuation with Batman so I guess I have no vested interest on how past writers/comics handled the heroes & villains in comics/'toons/etc but I think both The Batman Series and The Batman Strikes provide both an innovative and innocent mystique surrounding Dark Knight lore - one that both children and adults can appreciate. The vibrant artwork & style associated with both the book & cartoon lends itself well to the universe.
