I felt that in this show The Joker was never portrayed as Batman's arch-enemy. He was no different then The Riddler or Catwoman.
I felt the show favored The Penguin and made him Batman's "big-foe" and in reality Penguin was no where near an archvillain like Joker.
This is something that has always griped me with the show...
Thoughts?

You have to remember, at that time Burgess Meredith was a huge star. The show really liked him. I've also read that every time he was in town, the show had a script for him. Thats why he was in so many eps. Why the Joker wasn't Batman's arch-rival ? I kinda think in a way the show wasn't really set up for him to have just a really big threat. But at the same time the Joker was one of his biggest enemies.

Which sucked, because Romero was pretty good at the Joker.

The show was really too slapstick for The Joker to be an arch villain, its not like they wanted Romero running around killing people,in fact they didn't want any villain doing that.

The Riddler was actually treated as Batman's biggest arch-villain, at least in the first season. He was the villain used in the first episode, and when Gordon calls Batman, he says, "It's your old arch-nemesis, the Riddler." The Riddler appears more often than any other villain in season one. Then Frank Gorshin's nightclub act became extremely popular due to the show, and was too busy to make any more appearances. The Riddler only appeared once in season two and was played by John Astin. In season three, Frank came back for one episode. I do think Frank's Riddler was the best villain on the show, and I can see why the producer went with him as the biggest villain.
BTW, the Penguin and the Joker appeared in 19 episodes each, they tied for the most appearances by a villain.

The funny thing about this is that I think that the actors who did the best jobs (Gorshin, Romero, and Meredith) with the corny material they were given were the ones who kept coming back; their performances made them special and actually anchored the series.
