I've given this quite a bit of thought over the years and its also a question that I am writing an article around so your input would be especially helpful. Why do you think one person collects yet his or her brother of the same age doesnt? Is it enviroment? Exposure? Simple luck of the draw? Chime in with your thoughts and I will follow up with mine a bit later.

There's a lot of factors, tastes, interests, peers etc.My Brother grew up with totally different tastes to me but we still had things in common as well. I think a lot of it traces back to our childhood and the things that had a major influence on our young lives. The difference is whether you want to surround yourself with those memories or just leave them as things of your past. I think a certain amount of obsessivesness is essential to becoming a collector, well i know i am obsessive anyway. ;D

I think a lot of it is exposure, and I just love toys always have always will and the interest never left me at all.availability was always an issue in Ireland but I have got a lot of stuff through the Internet that I always wanted.the Internet really got me back in full swing

I didnt have many toys as a kid.I only got to play with cool toys if my friends had them. So i decided to buy the toys i always wanted, as an adult. The way i see it is your only too old to have toys when your dead and buried. I use them to hold on to a little bit of my short time as a child.

Why can one brother love scary movies, the other hate them? I don't think collecting can be put above any other difference that can be accredited to an inviduals tastes.
I don't know for certain why I collect. On the one hand, I just plain LOVE toys..I see them and I get all giddy. They thrill me still at my age, and thats hard to do lol. I just love the look and feel of them...I love the packaging..I love the characters. I love it all!
Now to analyze..WHY do I love them? Maybe a rough childhood. All I had was my toys and cartoons to escape reality...and maybe thats just stuck with me..its so much a part of my psyche that I can't help but still be drawn to it all. Who knows. I think its different for everyone, though.

I wasn't really into collecting toys until I saw Transformers:Robots in Disguise. It was cool seeing the Transformers as vehicles again so I just started from there. I got into Batman after reading "Kingdom Come." I had always loved Batman so, it just blossomed out from there. However, I want to keep a tighter leash on my collection. At one time, I had over 200 Transformers. I got way out of hand. I'm already over 30 Batman, so I must find ways to slow down even though I admit there's at least another 15 that I want.

Just a part of who you are, I think, with a nice dollop of obsessive-compulsive disorder thrown in for good measure.

[shadow=red,left,300]My fiance has labeled my collecting as obsessive-compulsive, especially as of late what with all the great stuff that's everywhere. I guess she's right....I mean I have made it a daily habit to hit my local grocery stores, searching for that still elusive can of Batman Spaghettios. ;D[/shadow]

Naw, Bullock. You ain't obsessive. You're obsessive when your collection contributes to the end of your marriage as it did mine. I realized to late that what was my hobby consumed me. That is why I'm trying harder than ever to keep a tighter leash on my spending.

For me, collecting has always been a part of my life. I have collected everything imaginable (stamps, Star Wars, cards, records, toys, BATMAN, posters etc..) .It can be almost obsessive at times. I admit it.. But why does one collect at all? I've read theories that compare collecting to to a sort of modern version of the "hunting instinct".. ! I believe that everybody needs a hobby and something to do in their spare time. Collecting can be great fun and very rewarding, especially when you find that special something... Collecting Batman has grown to become so much more than just a hobby for me, it's a part of who I am and maybe it's a way for me to stay young at heart.. keep on collecting...

I think its different for everyone, though. I totally agree with that. Comics and toys make you forget about reality. Once I come back into reality, I have an urge to buy more comics and toys.
And about the whole brother thing, I'm glad I have a brother who shares my same interest.

Not exactly sure why I collect things (Batman, Heroes in general and toys) but in 2000 the University of Hawaii held an exhibit of certain collections of art ( I don't exactly remember what). While at the exhibit, I read the card they had given me which I think gives a good description of collectors. It hangs in the hall way of my house near a small portion of my collection.
"...People collect for various reasons, however, as the title Private Passions implies, in each of these instances the emotional experience of searching for, acquiring and enjoying the objects is paramount. Closely allied to the passion of collecting is the pursuit of knowledge and connoisseur-ship. As the word connoisseur suggests, collectors often become the most discerning judges of the best in their field. For many, collecting constitutes the opportunity to learn more about a culture, its history or the styles of art that it produced. Nevertheless for some, collecting is also an expression of group loyalty- a search for "roots" and the meaning and identity this imparts..."

I, personally, don't believe that the stuff is necessarily what makes the collector; you could have all the Batman items in the world, but, not be a committed fan. For me, the devotion to the character is what it's really all about...Some call it "fan/ idol worship", I call it "a fan's tribute" to a character that is relevant enough for other companies to rip-off.
My collection's not the largest...It's not the most impressive...But, at the end of the day, they are the items that I've held on to throughout countless moves, and have provided me comfort when I needed them. In return, I stuck with the hobby, through the bullying and the countless harrasments...Even through Batman & Robin...I've stuck with it, and feel like a better person because of it, and because it has shown me that commitment can be a wonderful pay-off in the long run...
After Batman Begins premiered, I've become determined that the choice I made was the right one ever since...

That was nicely put man. Thanks, it means a lot to me... I've dealt with some "Batman fans" before about this, and all they'd say is usually something along the lines of "you're just saying that to make up for the fact that your stuff sucks..." For me, the stuff is cool, but, it's only temporary; the items will eventually erode and fade in time, comics or otherwise...My goal is to gain enough of an understanding of the history of Batman to be able to tell oral histories of the character and his exploits to the next generation...Sort of like the 21st century equivalent to radio dramas...
