Just saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt host saturtday night live and thought he could be a suitable stand-in for Heath. The way he was dressed, the cheesy smile, the way he worked the stage, over-acting a bit, I just kept seeing him as the Joker. I'm spreading the word around, hoping someone in the know might agree. This seems like well-informed group of fans, tell me what you think.

It's possible, I thought that Joseph was awsome as The Doctor/Cobra Commander in the Gi Joe Movie. Thing to understand, Heath brought new life into a well established character that would be hard to follow.

Move on to the next villain!! I'm afraid that if someone else does it and it's not as good, that it will tarnish Heath's performance...AND THAT CANNOT HAPPEN!!!!

The Joker is THE archrival of batman, i don't think one should exist without the other, it's like lex luthor and superman, or even optimus prime and megatron. Obviously, what heath did was amazing and cannot be topped, but Mr. J puts the "Dark" in this universe, otherwise batman is just the "caped crusader." Definitely, the sequals need new villians to center around, but always having the Joker in the background is the way to go.

[shadow=red,left,300]I don't mind the role of the Joker being recast. But I can't stand Joesph Gordan-Levitt!
Ever since I heard him go on about how great a live action Akira movie would be and how highly he thinks of himself, I wanted to run him over with a steam roller![/shadow]

I don't know much about the kid, but based on how I've seen him perform, I think he's the way to go. I'm sure there's some unknown out there that could blow everyone away, I just don't see hollywood taking a risk like that, and I want to see this universe continue. The Joker must live on

Given the way 'Dark Knight' ended, I don't think a villain will even be necessary - Bats will have enough to deal with. I wouldn't be opposed to some blurb mentioning the Joker's trial, or his stay in Arkham, or something like that...but he shouldn't appear again, out of respect to Ledger's performance and passing.
On the flip side, maybe an unconventional Riddler might be the way to go...perhaps that weasly little accountant who figured out his secret...

If, and its a big if, they decided to use Joker again, I see no problem with getting another actor. Joker is a character, he wasnt Heath Ledger. He was nothing more than an actor portraying a fictional being. I think people seem to forget that. There have been many, many instances where different actors have portrayed the same character in a movie series. No one actor is bigger than the character they are playing.

You gotta have the Joker, it's just that simple. He is the perfect inverse of Batman; scary vampire-esque character is the righteous good guy while the playful clown is the demented bad guy. Heath did just play the character that one time, but he did it perfectly for this dark world. So perfect in fact that he HAS to be replaced, this character NEEDS to keep going. And the only person I've seen anywhere that has sparked my interest as a replacement is Levitt. The next movies can, and maybe should, center around other villians, but the Joker is gonna over-shadow everything anyway, so why not put him in it.

Heath played an outstanding maniac. He played an amazing character that I absolutely adore and watch over and over again. But in my humble opinion...he wasn't the Joker. The Joker is happy, corny, cheesy, bright, giggly, but still insane and pure evil. Heath was dark...and that just isn't the Joker. I'd want an actor to portray a happier Joker.

Sorry, but to me, Heath was dead on as the Joker. He was insane, took joy in killing others, had a sick sense of humor, and pure evil. Isn't it doing those things that make Joker happy? That's what the Joker is at his core, and we got that in TDK. Plus he was giggly and wore a purple suit. Besides that, Heath studied Arkham Asylum and The Killing Joke for his role, and those were very dark interpretations of the Joker. What you described, to me at least, seems like a silver age Joker, and that wouldn't have fit with the tone of the film.
I think this may be the start of a good debate.

I agree that the tone of the film didn't fit a brighter Joker. But even in the Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum, the Joker ALWAYS smiled, danced around, sang songs. That's what makes him scary, the fact that he seems so nice and funny, but is a dark killer below the surface. In TDK, his makeup and demeanor didn't make him a likable person. No one would ever approach him or be taken in by his personality. He had no charm, no wit...he was just crazy. And it was a good interpretation, but I personally like the happier Joker best.

I'm totally undecided. Is this a Joker making an appearance in the reboot?? If so it seems totally pointless! Not only does Batman not need a reboot, especially after only 2 years since the release of TDKR, but even if it does, there are still loads of Batman villans other than the Joker!! Riddler! Penguin! Ivy! Hell, a decent Mr. Freeze! The world has settled for a very dark Joker portrayed by an excellent actor, can't we just be happy for while??

I think JGL would be a good Joker and for one particular reason. Obviously he has the mischievous smile and glimmer in his eye but what I really like is that he is so slender and wiry. Batman is this hulking, ripped athlete while the Joker is a skinny little nerd. He's unconventional, unexpected and impossibly unpredictable. That's the strength of Joker and I would relish that sort of take on an old character, a take that would be a welcome departure from the Ledger Joker.
