I tend to define cinema in two ways. There are "films," and then there are "movies." A film is something serious, something that aims to be greater than the sum of its parts. Film challenges you, it makes you think, it generates discussion, it defines an entire genre. Movies are popcorn entertainment, mindless, fun, and ultimately forgettable. I saw "Batman Begins" on Wednesday, and I still can't get it out of my mind.
This is a film in every sense of the word. This is cinema, this is something that has taken the comic book genre to a new level of greatness. This isn't a comic book movie, this just happens to be based on a comic book.
Christian Bale headlines a cast of thespians, each of them shining, and yet never outshining Bale himself. From the first frame, the film is riveting. The pacing is spectacular. Batman doesn't appear until nearly an hour through, but never does this film drag, or become boring. This is a mythology realized on screen like nothing before. Comic fans will see influences from the likes of Denny O'Neil, Frank Miller & Jeph Loeb, but those unfamiliar with the Batman saga will see nothing except a great film.
Though "Batman Begins" finishes with the promise of endless possibility, the journey to get to this point has at times seemed endless itself. Though we all have our favorites from the old series that began with Tim Burton's "Batman," no one can dispute that the franchise got off on the wrong foot. In retrospect, its doom seems inevitable. Visually stunning, strong performances, but ultimately hollow movies.
Not so with "Begins." As a life-long Batman fan, this is finally the movie I always wished to see, but never thought, never imagined, would actually be made. Christopher Nolan and David Goyer should be proud of what they've accomplished, and even should this film fail financially, it doesn't change the fact that what they've created is a milestone. As Richard Donner's "Superman" is to that mythology, "Batman Begins" is to the Dark Knight.
As a Batman fan, I've never been more proud, nor as satisfied, as I was walking out of this film. This is the real deal, and a film I know I will be enjoying for years to come.

GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!! If anyone gets the chance to see it at an IMAX go. Everyone in the theatre left with a smile on their face.
Christian Bale nailed it as did Michael Caine as Alfred. I lovec the Ducard/Ra's twist. That was awesome. I cannot wait for this movie to come out on DVD.

I saw the film today. It was great. Overall I liked it very very much. There were however somethings that I didn't like. But just tiny things.
I don't have right now the time to write a good review... I'll come back later to share my point of view of this film.

FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This film has breathed new life into Batman. I was a big fan before, i am a bigger fan now.
I was on the edge of my seat through the whole movie.
I waited ages for this film, i expected it to be let down as i had built it up so high, but i could not have wished for more.
I went straight to tru after the film and bought me some figures to celebrate.
Christian Bale IS Batman ;D ;D ;D ;D

Just a short message from me: Overall i enjoyed the movie as a whole. I was disappointed that Scarecrow didn't have more screen time but when Cillian was on screen he really commanded my attention with his excellent performance.

I have seen Batman Begins twice! This IS THE DEFINATIVE Batman movie! To me the best comic book film made so far. I really love the influences made you have Year One elements ( Sgt./Lt. Jim Gordon, Detective Flass, carmine Falcone, Commissioner Loeb-who really wasn't or didn't seem corrupt like the Year One version, and the origin, The bats as a diversion for the police like Year One) Year Two/ Pre-Crisis ( Joe Chill) Long Halloween ( Scarecrow horse sequence). I loved how a young officer Gordon was there to comfort Bruce after his parents died. Loved seeing how the Batman and Gordon relationship developed. Christian Bale was a great Bruce Wayne/ Batman. The best so far. Up to this point Michael Keaton was the best (as far as live action Kevin Conroy animated). This movie has raised the bar as Spider-Man 2 had done. Loved Sacrecrow/ Dr. Jonathan Crane.Cillian Murphy did a good job. Liam Neeson was a good Ra's Al Ghul (Ducard). Gary Oldman did a good job as Jim Gordon. Tom Wilkenson surprised me and did a good job as Carmine Falcone. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine were good as well as Lucius Fox and Alfred. Rutger Hauer was good as Earle. Katie Holmes was okay as Rachel Dawes. At least she was going around screaming all the time like Vicki Vale did in the others and actually had a strong female presence. Batman at times was scary.. a real "creature of the night" Loved the origin, Scarecrow, and Gordon sequences. My favorate scene is when Batman interrogates Flass " Swear To Me." Good seeing Mr. Zsasz and the Joker card in the end. I heard applause on the Joker card. Again ... THIS IS THE DEFINATIVE BATMAN MOVIE!!! ProfessorH! BB2......

This was an awesome movie! Perhaps that explains why I've seen it three times and plan to see it a fourth. Hands down I consider this to be the greatest movie I have ever seen.

Tonight I went and saw Batman Begins for the second time, still enjoy it as much!
I am really glad WB didn't show too much in the trailers, and spoiled the surprise. Unlike some movie, such as Fantastic Four's trailer pretty much show the whole movie.
From what I read, box office number isn't good at all in general for 2005. War of the Worlds will open on June 29th, and it will either help push the box office, get more people back into theaters....
or take away the tickets and spotlight from Batman Begins.
In regards to War of the Worlds, Paramount and DreamWorks are also tightly guarding the surprise, and imageries of the invaders (tripods)....
Our company got invited to the premiere at L.A.'s Mann Chinese Theater, host by Tom Cruise, but we are on the East coast, too expensive to go in such last minute. Bummer.

???All I can say is finally our hero get the respect that he deserves. We live in a small town in the Central Valley of California, (Manteca, to be exact) and we got to see the movie at midnight, there was only my son and I. I must admit, the movie brought tears of joy to my eyes. It is as close to perfect as it can be. The Henri Ducard/Ras Al Guhl twist caught me totally off guard. It's so true "you can't keep a good man down", looks like Batman has escaped death once again, not ever Clooney and Schumacher could put him down!

Mr. Zsasz? Who is that? :x I have to go see Begins again. I keep craving more. of course we all know him from the comic books as everybodies favorite serial killer, but in Batman Begins he was played by Tim Booth, he was one of the Arkham Inmates, with the self inflicted scars on his neck, he was in the red jumpsuit and bald, and was going towards Rachel and that little kid when Gotham was a mess (towards the end)

It was well worth the wait! So many references to Year One, more than I'd ever guessed. Just fantastic! Hopefully Nolan will be doing the next two. I do have to say this being Batman's first real time out saving Gotham, he's going to make mistakes. That's why I can forgive some scenes like the driving over cop cars and heck, even leaving Ra's to die... Or so we think. I'm looking forward to the modifications Bruce makes to the suit, cave, and Batmobile too in the next movie. These things should be more refined over time.

Batman Begins was GREAT! I saw it last night, and it was really well-done and Bale was 100% as Batman. Scarecrow and Ra's were both excellent too.
I was disappointed by the relatively small number of people in attendance at the theatre though. I was expecting a sold-out house last night.

leaving Ras to die wasnt a mistake-it was him or Batman-he had Bruces parents killed after all and as long as Bats didnt kill him with his own hands Im fine with it.the Villians need to die and Im glad Nolan sees this too.the comics are different they can live but not in movieworld Nolan done this well.Batman should never kill villians-but if they die due to their own schemes-thats fine like Joker in 89-Batman didnt throw him to his death,Ditto for Two face in Forever-Ras death was similar. so Ras death wasnt a mistake at all neither was driving over Police cars-he would do that in the comic too if he had someone he loved in the car needing-URGENT help overall Nolan really impressed me with the way he handled things

i just saw it....everything perffect crow was brilliant and his fear wasnt cheesy or overdramatic it fit the tone. Gordon was a hero. wow never imagined this would happened...the screaming choas scenes were well choreographed and the entire plot was magic. never ever will there be one as great as this. i liked bale's performance the batmobile's practicalness and the movie seemed so real 10for10. nothing, no plot loop, no character was wrong bats was captured perfectly and alfred was awesome. gotham was great and the props were great. i just didnt like katie holmes. dunno why if there's to be a sequel it could be just as good but wont top it. unless it had a major story arc like no man's land

THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING!!! I totally love it. Best Batman/ Comic-Book Movie!!! Here the things I like: The story was great, the cast was perfect. The charakter was never handled so faithfully. Christian Bale is the perfect Batman, and he tops every previous batman easily. The supporting charakter were great! Michael Caine was brilliant and I love his humor. Also Morgan Freeman couln'd do any better, perfect and funny! Gary Oldman was great as Gordon, I was never a fan of the charakter but in the movie, great! And Liam Nielson was such a great villain. He was not just a insane villain, he was like Ra's should be. Cillian Murphy was also cool, he was really insane. Also I like Katie Holmes, she has something really cute and I like that she wasnt only a helpless woman. It was a perfect cast! Gotham looks so cool, it looks dirty. And I love the train and the Wayne tower (also it was a little to light but it shows that the Waynes wanted to make the city better). The Batsuit looks great and it was cool that they explained where the suite and every gadget comes from. Also the Thumber was so cool to watch. When I first saw it, I was sceptic and thought, thats no Batmobile. But when I first saw it in action, I love it. So dynamic... And all she bats were so well animated and they gave the movie such an scare tone. It was such a good feeling to not so many CG. I love this, because it is getting to much in past movies (Spider-Man, Catwoman, Star Wars ( i haven't even see 3 because in 2 was way to much CGI, Fantastc Four,...) . And it was cool to see great action without computer effects. Only the city and the bats where digital. Also the story was so faithful to Batman/ Bruce Wayne. I love how they show what a broken man Bruce was and how he evolves into the role of Batman. And the story twist were nice with Ra's and so. And it was good that the scenes with Batman were serious and that there was fun in scenes wit Bruce and the supporting charakters. And the end was so great, when he gave Batman the card I was smiling like the Joker himselve ;D Wow, can't wait to see how they'll handle him... But there are some small things I don't like that much: Some action scenes were to fast, you couldn't even follow so good. And some scenes could have been longer. I can't wait for Batman 2 to come. Then we'll have more Batman and the Joker I really hope that everybody is going to return! Also it didn't make me that sad that Batman Begins makes the previous movie undone. The first two were great and Nicholson was a perfect Joker and Pfeiffer was stunning as Catwoman, but the style of this movie is so Batman that I am ready for a new beginning!

I just saw it and not only is it the best Batman movie Ive ever seen but the best of any kind of Movie Ive seen in a very long time. Bale Is Batman: he completely captured all sides of the character. Caine, Freeman, and Oldman; as brilliant as ever. Neeson was excellent, he made a great Ducard and an even better Ra's. Cillian was a great Scarecrow. Even Holmes did better than I expected (I thought she was nothing more than the love interest, I didnt expect she was as important to the plot. Everthing that was changed from the comics works perfectly in the movie. Everything Batman used had a purpose and functionality, from his cape to the Tumbler (which I didint like the first time I had seen it, but now I love it). I really cant wait until the sequel comes out. I'll just have to settle for watching Begins a dozen more times.

I am absolutely gutted. My girlfriend and I drove 60 miles to Manchester to see it on the IMAX. Just as Bruce had returned to Gotham and was checking out the cave for the first time there was a power cut and we had to leave!!! We couldn't even get a refund as the tills were out. So we got guest passes but the IMAX only shows films for a week then puts it onto regular screens when a new film is released (ie War of the worlds). So if this film sucks when I finally get to see it, I will burn all my Bat stuff and have my tattoo removed!!! My anger outways my disappointmet!!! man that is rough, heres an exalt to cheer you up :-Xthat happened to me when I went to see JP3 I hate cinema problems too

Finally got around to seeing the movie last night. I wasn't expecting a lot, as I suspected the movie was overhyped in the initial fan frenzy. I was wrong- it was every bit as good as Batman Returns (my favourite of the older films) and more.
The beginning started off a bit slow, and contained the one weak moment in the film- Thomas and Martha's death scene. Thomas Wayne's last words, while strangely appropriate, were still unneccessary and detracted from the intensity of the scene. The brutality of having his world collapse around him is what drove Bruce into vengeance, and the suddenness of this change is part of what makes the sequence cool. Having him speak to Bruce just seemed to weaken the impact.
Back to everything else, though- I had a feeling Liam Neeson was secretly Ras Al Ghul (pronounced differently from TAS, interestingly enough- I think I prefer the Dini/Timm way, but not a big deal), as Ken Watanabe was just not...well, ghoulish enough for the role. Neeson was spot-on! I was initially disappointed that he never called Bruce 'Detective', but then I realized Bruce wasn't really a detective at all. Ghul's plan made perfect sense, was intense and dramatic, and served to connect all of the events I thought were random throwaways throughout the movie.
Scarecrow was hardly in it, but he didn't look as ridiculous as I expected, as he only pulled on his mask when using the fear gas, which made perfect sense. I was disappointed in his final scene though- his exit where he's fallen over on his horse could've been played up for the scary, with him screaming in pain at his flaming head, but instead it was sort of for laughs. Everything else, though, especially his torture of Carmine Falcone, was brilliant.
Speaking of Falcone, even though he didn't look a thing like the man from The Long Hallowe'en, Tom Wilkinson was brilliant, and stole every scene. Zsasz, though, I was disappointed in- we didn't get to see him shirtless, which we obviously should have, and part of his appeal is that he's sort of a scrawny, spooky looking guy, whereas the actor just looked 'thugly.'
I can't say enough about Gordon, Fox and Alfred. Brilliant in every scene, and more importantly, THEY WERE USED TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL! All of them were useful, not just minor cameos! I was disappointed that Harvey Dent didn't show up (or did he? I didn't check the credits closely), but Katie Holmes was acceptable, and that's all you can really ask for in a romantic interest on film who's not played by a leather-clad Michelle Pfeifer.
Bat-Bale was brilliant as Bruce Wayne. Didn't care for his throatier Bat-voice (get some cough medicine, man!), seemed almost like he was trying too hard. His costume and dialogue more than made up for it though.
My favourite Batfilm so far, and believe me, it takes a lot to knock the Pfeifer-Cat out of first place.

I honestly think that this is the best possible Batman film they could've made. I know we could knit pick it all...some of the editing was a little choppy..but lets face it, nothings perfect, right?
I'm absolutely thrilled and pleased with this film, and I hope you all are as well! This is a great triumph for us fans that have waited our entire lifetime to see a valid and credible representation of Batman on Film.
Thank you to Nolan, Goyer, Bale and the rest of the cast and crew for giving us THE definitive Batman movie.

leaving Ras to die wasnt a mistake-it was him or Batman-he had Bruces parents killed after all and as long as Bats didnt kill him with his own hands Im fine with it. I didn't think he actually had them killed tho. I could be wrong but wasn't it their deaths that thwarted his first weapon (i.e. economy) and made Gotham "continue to limp it's way on". Once again i could be wrong tho. If Ra's was the cause of their deaths then IMO that would be a wrong move. I never liked that joker killed his parents in the first movie so i hope ra's didn't have them killed either. It takes away Bruce's inability for vengeance. For Father's day my mom and i took my dad. His knowledge of comics or batman is EXTREMELY limited. He really enjoyed the movie. He was asking if there will be anymore. I was surprised. He's not into movies that much.

Just going to chime in and throw my 2 cents down. Like everybody else, I thought this was a great movie. Nolan was a brilliant choice for taking up the franchise again and I really hope he signs on for a #2. WB has rediscovered the magic. And how about that Gary Oldman? He's the man! Only one quibble and that was the pronunciation of Ras al Ghul's name. IN the cartoon they say 'Raysh' but in the movie they said Ras. Does anyone know what Denny O'Neill intended it to be when he created the character? UPDATE: Woops! A little internet search and I managed to find the answer to that question here. Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars from this viewer. mike

Finally saw it last night. Wow. As far as I'm concerned, this is the truest ever portrayal of Batman on screen.
That interrogation scene gave me chills. Bale played both the Bat and Bruce Wayne perfectly. I loved the first scene in the prison as well ( "...no, protection from you") Ha ha.
I did think Katie Holmes' character was kind of pointless though I suppose there had to be a female lead in the movie, and she is gorgeous. Man! I can't wait for the sequel, and aparrently there definitely will be one. Begins did very respectable numbers at the box office over the weekend.
