This is obviously a shock to everyone. Heath was a fine young actor with a very promising career ahead of him. This role as Joker was definately going to bring him the kind of attention needed to bring that career to the next level. It appears that he was, like many actors and artists, a troubled person. His family has our sympathies and we sincerely hope that he is resting in peace.
I can't help but think of Brandon Lee when I look forward to seeing his final performance. This is going to elevate The Dark Knight to an odd cult status.

Sad news indeed. My thoughts are with his family, and as someone who has enjoyed Heath Ledger's work since "Roar," he will be missed.

They must dedicate The Dark Knight to him and put in an "In Memoriam" mention it in the end credits. "In Memoriam" will probably be right at the beginning of the film! There is such an excitement building for this film, it is so sad that his death will leave the film goers in bit of a somber mood instead of a full-blown celebration of his manic creation! I hope getting this Joker role didn't create or bring up some inner demons that contributed to this! RIP, Heath...

This is so hard to gripp, my friend called me and I didn't know what to believe. I wish my condolences, may he rest in peace. *tear* [/shadow]

This is such a shame.28 yrs old-he was still a kid. This is such a big loss to the acting community, his best films were ahead of him. From what I've been reading it sounds like he went out on a high note with his performance in TDK. Rest in Peace Heath- you will be missed.

I know it's not, but it would be awesome if this by some miracle turned out to be a big joke, something only the sickest Joker imaginable (which is what he strived for) would do, and that he was alive and well somewhere. it would certainly make some unique viral marketing. i wonder if they will continue any viral marketing now, it would be weird sending text messages and emails and pictures from The Joker now that he's gone... I personally hope they continue though, to mark his passing with an awesome experience for the Batfans. i'm sure he wouldn't want everything to shut down. as mentioned, it must be tough for all those associated with TDK like Nolan, Bale, Gyllenhall (Jake too), they must all have built up a good camaraderie with each other during filming. still can't believe it. a Variety article: Click(notice they say "In Gotham..." instead of "In Manhattan...")

He also said that playing the character was a lot of fun. He was currently working on a completely different movie, and was all wrapped up with his Joker performance.
I just don't want people blaming the character for a suicide. It is not clear what happened here, we can only specualte until autopsy results are in.

WOW, that is messed up. He said he had a hard time playing the joker and trying to sleep. He said the role was difficult, and he had a great expereance, he did not kill himself over the role, besides he was in the works of filming something else.

I can't help but think of Brandon Lee when I look forward to seeing his final performance. This is going to elevate The Dark Knight to an odd cult status. He'll be the next Curt Cobain If anything, he's the next River Phoenix. Like Phoenix, Ledger was a young, up-and-coming actor who was showing a lot of promise, who suddenly died as his star was reaching its peak. He showed incredible promise with Brokeback Mountain and Candy. I haven't seen I'm Not There yet, but I've heard it's another example of how dynamic of an actor he truly is. The Dark Knight probably won't be an exception, making it very sad indeed considering how many idiotic dope fiends like Lindsay Lohan or Amy Whinehouse will still able to cash on their talentless celebrity in the years ahead.

Yeah, a friend of mine said River Phoenix instead of Curt Cobain. I hadn't even thought of him

Very tragic indeed. I was in a lot of doubt when I heard he was cast as the Joker but the trailer was awesome and the main part of that awe was inspired by Heath Ledger playing the Joker. God rest the man! RIP
