Jason Hall wrote the touching Mr. Freeze 'Early Thaw' storyline in Gotham Adventures #51. With a follow-up story coming in Batman Adventures and a Justice League Adventures issue in his future, Legions Of Gotham wanted to get to know Jason a little better!
---------------------
LoG: Your story 'Early Thaw' in Gotham Adventures #51 was a big hit with DCAU fans. Can we expect a follow-up story in Batman Adventures?
Jason Hall: It's actually being drawn as I type! Kelsey Shannon, the artist on
the keen covers to Batman Adventures, is doing the art chores for
the issue. It will be in the same 17/5 page format. I've seen the
artwork for the 5-page story so far, and it looks fantastic! The
back-up story will tie into the events (and serve as an epilogue)
to the the main 17-page story. And the main story will feature
the long-awaited reunion of... well, that would be telling! The
issue isn't officially on the schedule yet, but it should be out in
2004. If readers enjoyed my "Early Thaw" story (which is great
to hear!), then I think they'll be just as excited about this one. I
had a great time writing it.
LoG: Are you a fan of the animated Batman toons? Justice League? Teen Titans?
Jason Hall: I watch all the "Animated Universe" cartoons, including Justice League
and Teen Titans (my wife really likes the TT show!). I've also written
for Justice League Adventures ("Emotional Baggage" in #20, and
the upcoming team-up with the Legion of Super-Heroes in #28!). But
I'd have to say that my favorites are the Batman Animated Series (both
the original episodes and the revamped design episodes) and the
Superman Animated Series. It's fun to use elements and continuity
from the actual shows in my "Animated Universe" comic stories, and
I think that's something readers who are fans of the shows enjoy as
well. But I also strive to make sure my stories can be enjoyed by
casual readers or those who may not be familiar with the cartoons.
And, like most fans, I've got my fingers crossed the WB will do DVD
box sets of the Superman and Batman cartoons!
LoG: Do you collect Batman toys or merchandise? If so, what types?
Jason Hall: I don't do too much toy collecting these days. I have a lot of the figures from the Batman Animated Series up on my bookshelf (some of those
were really nicely done). And I just picked up the Batman Masterpiece Edition box set (on clearance!) -- and the Golden Age Batman figure that comes with that just might be the coolest Batman figure ever. I also
have that giant half-figure bust of Batman from the Animated Series sitting on top of my bookshelf.
LoG: Favorite bat-villian and why?
Jason Hall: Mr. Freeze for certain! He's the classic tragic character. I'm drawn to tragic stories, especially those concerning romance. One of the many appealing aspects of Victor Fries's character is his ironic nature.
Here's this "villain" who is supposedly frozen to emotion, yet his entire motivation is based on emotion and stems from his love for his wife! And you're going to see that front and center in my upcoming story. I
always wanted to see more of Victor and Nora's story as a viewer (and, I actually had the initial idea for my "Early Thaw" story way back in high school when I saw "Heart of Ice" for the first time!), so it was
very neat to get to take matters into my own hands and add to the history of these characters that mean so much to me. I have the utmost respect for them, and what has gone before -- and I hope readers like where I'm taking them. "Early Thaw" was just the beginning!
LoG: Any other Batman related projects on the horizon?
Jason Hall: Batman appears in my upcoming issue of Justice League Adventures (#28), and I hope to do more guest spots on the Batman Adventures
book in the future. You can check out my website for a complete listing of past, present, and future projects:

And if you've dug my work on the DC "Animated Universe" books, then I hope you'll check out some of my other projects --I think you'll enjoy them. Thanks!
Big thanks to Jason for taking the time to do this talkback with us Legion Of Gothamites! Everyone be sure to check out his website (listed above) for his future projects!
