According to a representative, Mattel will "probably" rely more on comic book and specialty shops for their TDK figures, due to the dark nature of the movie. They say that this has been the plan all along.
Here is the link to the article:
www.nypost.com/seven/02162008/news/nationalnews/cruel_joker_97872.htm
Now, Im sure that the basic 5 inch line will hit retail stores, but does this mean that the more collectable figures will not be?

This is probably, no, this IS their dumbest move ever. How do they expect these toys to sell if they don't market them to retail stores? Because most collectors aren't going to pick up multi-colored Batman figures like kids do. Another thing: "because the movie is dark and not particularly kid-appropriate"? Are they serious? Come on, what about Batman Returns? That's gotta be way darker than this. I could go on about the rage I feel right now, but it'll probably get me banned.

Come on, what about Batman Returns? That's gotta be way darker than this. I could go on about the rage I feel right now, but it'll probably get me banned. Then allow me: With this move, Mattel officially proves that they do not care about current or potential Batman fans. This move is the cornerstone of Mattel's failure with Batman-related products, though it should come as no surprise right now. After three years of being played by this multi-billion dollar corporation, I personally feel that fans have given Mattel chance after chance to prove themselves. Unfortunately, they have failed on every level. They can't market their products successfully; they can't provide sufficient supplies to mass retailers; and they can't seem to produce the figures they've promised fans would be readily available. They're screwing everyone over, and I'm personally tired of it. I'm tired of them coming on boards and telling fans "You'll just have to wait and see what happens" or "with the release of a new movie, anything is possible." It's those vague statements which lifts the burden of responsibility from their shoulders. All they have to do is say, "hey, we didn't promise anything!"-- which is essentially what they have been doing for three and a half years. Mattel's venture into DC related products started off great. Batman products could be found just about everywhere, and the company seemed to care a lot about the fans. Since then, though, it seems Mattel is under new management, and they've completely done away with fan interaction, not to mention actually selling products. With the biggest Batman release ever happening this summer, it doesn't make one bit of sense to provide TDK figures in limited stock. It's just another numbskulled move from an equally numbskulled company.

Hasbro getting both DC and Marvel licenses sounds pretty good right now.

and now, starting in 2010, Mattel has the WWE license. Check out the wrestling forums for that discussion.lol You think we're hard on them.
Mattel needs to do some serious improvements on their action fgiure front. Seriously.
Also, the lame, no answer answers they give us here on LoG is the same ones they give to the POA board as well.
Im gonna say this, if anyone was alive in the nineties and was a collector of Batman, they CANNOT be happy with the last 5 years of Batman toy products. It has become such a travesty that you cant possibly say that getting maybe 3 or 4 new figs a year is great. and thats if you can find them.

Yeah this totally blows. It has been impossible to find Batman figures at the mass retail market and while I love my local comic store I really don't want to pay double what Target or Wal-mart would charge.

Guys, I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but it makes sense. The collector line goes to specialty stores, and the play line goes to mass retail. Sounds kosher to me. Can you imagine the confusion if both were side-by-side at Wal-Mart? Parents would be returning items because the larger figures would not fit into the smaller vehicles. If we pre-order these through our LCS, then at least we are guaranteed we'll have a set, and not have to be chasing Joker's all over God's creation.

Are we still getting any "inspired by" figures though? That's what I'm wondering.

Doesnt bother me. I also just dont care anymore. There have always and will always be Batman related toys. There have always and will always be various problems associated with it. There have always and will always be collectors and toy companies and complaints and hot air surrounding it all.

This is how RUMORS get started.....None of you guys read the article closely......
Read the article again......The person who said these things was NOT a Mattel Rep......It was the editor of Playthings Magazine.....Cliff Annicelli.......That was opinion....What the hell does he know? He's just some editor.....
NOWHERE does it say that these will have a limited release.......That would be economically stupid for Mattell, they know this and you should know better......
When has Mattel ever marketed to the specialty or comic shops? Would they really produce neon Batman variants AND playsets just to sell to some comic shop? Think!!!!!!!!! Everyone go and reread the article slowly and you'll see........Hopefully.......

here we are, about four months later and a week into the release of the TDK figures. $10 Joker figures are being scalped and running for 100 bucks on eBay and us collectors are running all over creation trying to find them without maxing out their credit cards and bank accounts. Target isn't even carrying TDK figures, and not all Walmarts are carrying the Movie Masters. Mattel has about a month or so to prove us wrong and rev things up in time for the movie's release, but things aren't looking good at this point.

Thats a slight exagguration..they're going for between $15 and $25 on average. Mattel can't exactly make Target carry their product either, now can they? lol. Nor can they make every WalMart stalk the movie masters..thats kinda up to the chain. I think the figures this time around are solid. As long as the sculpts hold up on the next run of movie masters I think its a decent success. I'm happy to have non-crappy movie figures for once! This is what, the first time ever?

Yeah I'm disappointed with Target but i see all the figures at every Wal-Mart i've been to, thats about 6. The four ToysR Us I've been to have them as well. I could drive about 10 min. down the road and grab anopther Joker right now. The only one I can't find is the chase movie master but thats just how it is.

All we know is that it will be sometime after TDK is released, since we'll finally see Two-Face by then. yeah, we didn't get a Liam Neeson Ra's Al Ghul figure until some time after Batman Begins was released. i think it'll be the same for the Two-Face figure. they don't want to spoil Harvey's turn for those who don't already know by putting the toy out there too early. and according to the reviewer on action-figure.com, there isn't a limited release and TDK figures will be continually shipped up until and well into the film's release.

I'm also in Iowa (and quite shocked to discover there's another bat-fan in this state), and I was pleasantly surprised to discover TDK figures at my local Wal-Mart (which hasn't carried any sort of DC figures, other than those toddler-oriented Super Friends, since about a month after the release of Superman Returns). I even managed to get my hands on a Destrocto-Case The Joker figure, though I was unhappy to discover the package had been opened and taped back together. All the parts seem intact, however, and the figure looks fine, so all's well that ends well.
I've been very deliberately not reading as much as possible about the movie, I'd rather be surprised when I see it the first time. However, I have to ask, is the Scarecrow supposed to be in it? There's a picture of a Scarecrow figure on the card.

To answer your question about Scarecrow......
Yes, he is back in TDK. But to what extent we dont know.

To get back on topic about the release of the MM's, I talked with my local TRUs manager about them not getting them in since the 1st. He said that afew people have inquired so he called to find out if they can get more back in. He was told that their regional distribution warehouse has none and wouldnt be getting more in. So now it looks like I may have to rely on either ebay or another collector to get my chase Batman because my Wal Mart doesnt carry them either. Never have.
Based on all this, Id say yeah, that qualifies as the MM's having limited release, especially when comparing to all the other toy merchandise is in abundance.
