I did my best to photographically document how i made my first custom.I probaly didn't go as comprehensive as i should have but i'm sure you will get the idea.Basically having no real customising knowledge i just attacked this project as best i thought.
The major part of the base figure was an Abbey Chase from the Danger Girl series.I also used some parts from the Russian Girl in this series.
The first part of the job was to remove all that i didn't need.I dremelled and sanded her Tank Top down so that the Torso would all blend together.Removed the head and put it in the fodder draw. Also got rid of the left hand, belt and leg holster on her right leg.Sanding and grinding down all the left over bits.I also shortened the neck stump and drilled it for a future peg for the head.
I test fitted the Robin cape and found i also had to square the shoulders up to the neck a bit to make it fit better, again enter the Dremel.
Pegged and glued the new Left hand into place. Also found that these figures are very tall.Wanting to keep her in scale with the Mattel comic figs i cut and pegged her at the ankles.I had to take off approx 1/2" from each leg and then re-shape the boots and Putty the joins. Now she was the same height as Battle Board Robin and the change in her height was not really noticeable as she had extremely long legs to begin with.
Now i get to try my hand at sculpting.I start with the Gauntlets and then extend the sleeves.Something to consider with sculpting things like sleeves is move your figure at the joint to make sure the new sculpt doesn't interfere with articulation or rub against other parts.
Also sculpted on the mask, making sure that it was evenly matched on both sides.
Now to add the accesories.I sculpted on the belt and then cut 1mm thick pieces of Styrene for the pouches and glued on at even spacings. Then added the gauntlet and sleeve pouches with some flat and half round styrene making sure they were all the same size.
Also used the half round styrene to make the ties on the shirt. Then i sanded them to round them all off and puttied in the additions to look like they were part of the costume.
The Belt Buckle was a part of one of my Wifes old earrings and i built up the rounded centre with Super Glue with an instant hardener to get the rounded effect.
The Batrope and Batarang was from a Zipline Bats,i filled in the gap on the back of the Batarang with Putty. Then i wrapped the rope around a small Glass Jar and sprayed it with Spray Glue. When the Glue was nearly dry i merely slid the rope off the jar and moved it into the desired shape to set.
Then i put her all together and painted her.Unfortunately i didn't photograph the painting process as i was a bit concerned about getting her finished before the competition ended. This is my favourite picture of her.
Hope you all find this interesting.
