Hey Josh, i'm hardly an expert by any means, but my understanding / definition of a wash is essentially the same as "stain". You can use actual stain or in most customizing circles you simply thin some paint with water and "wash" the project or the specific areas you want. Its purpose is to enhance and show definition. like on a figure, the deep creases in the muscles would be darker that the upper/outer portion. more realistic. if your figure were blue, you would in most cases use a darker blue (or whatever), thin it so it will flow into the small areas, paint it and in most cases wipe away the excess. I have seen several better explination and good step by step examples here and accross the net. Others here can certainly explain i better im sure

It's something i need right now LOL "Phew!is that me?"
Seriously though,Batlaw is on the mark.A Wash is a diluted darker shade of paint designed to "accent"the darker recesses of your figure.Simply choose your colour, don't try and stray too far from the base colour as a lot of people think you wash everything in Black.Which IMO looks extremely fake and spoils a paint job. Then dilute to a runny texture like milk if that makes sense. Then drag it over the areas of your piece you want to darken. Then with a Paper towel simply blot away the excess and from the raised areas and there you have it. if you need to know more don't hesitate to ask.
