Hi again everyone. I can't believe it's been so darn long since I last posted anything (9/27/04). It's been a long and challenging year and a half. Shortly after I posted the last time my mother fell and broke her hip. She died almost 6 months to the day after her fall. Things have steadily improved and the entire family is closer as a result. I finally have gotten back into my art and have produced 3 new superhero portraits, 2 of Batman and one of Superman. So here they are! Jack

*me breaks pencils, throws broken bits in garbage, and crawls in bed crying*
oh man, my sympathy though. I've had to live through broken hips with parents as well. no one's died yet, but it was kidney cancer that broke my mom's hip, and it's still wandering around her skeleton.....
back to happy stuff! can i have your drawing pencils?
POST MANY DRAWINGS PLEASE.

well, i can't guess the actor's name, but i'm hating you more and more with every post!
(er...that's friendly hate. in a friendly, hate-your-guts-and-your-shiny-pencils-too sort of way.)
er...another ps---- i know i should be able to tell this, but who's your model or whatever for batman? actor wise. or did you just draw someone/anyone? the 3/4 length shot of batman smacks of michael keaton. am i right? *looks again* yeah, the abdominal armor is definitely 1989 and returns-wear.

so! stumps or fingers for the shading?
(is that a pencil artist's pick-up line?)
seriously. waddya use? i use faber-castell 6h-8b, and a 9b woodless if someone gets rowdy on me. i've been meaning to break out the stumps/fingers to smooth my shading, but haven't yet, for some odd reason. maybe i'm chicken....
how big are your drawings? if I do anything bigger than about 9X12, I run into "scanner trouble"---the biggest local scanner is 11 by 17, if i recall correctly. if yours are bigger, how do you scan em in? you got a bigger scanner?
enquiring minds want to know!
and also----that first one. the background is absolutely black black black, they-finally-invented-something-darker-than-black-and-here-it-is black. background by computer? or gray and white pencils on a black board?

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. That is an amazing job you did JackStem!!!! I love that Superman one from 'SuperMan Returns' but I like the second Batman sketch the best. I believe it's Michael Keaton from the 1989 'Batman' movie. Great job.

You are correct! Christian Bale for the headshot and Michael Keaton for the 3/4 shot. Actually, it's a rendering of a plastic model.
Very Good!!! He also did a cameo in the 1978 Superman movie. He was on the train with another "old timer" Noel Neill. They played the parents of a young Lois Lane riding the train that Clark was racing.
I use Derwent 9h - 9b and I use a blending stump along with tortillons (I hoped that's spelled right). These are rendered on 11x14 Strathmore Smooth Bristol Board. I like the heavy weight. It holds up well if I have to erase. If i go with a bigger size, I scan in sections and then use Microsoft Image Composer to "stitch" the scans together. The BLACK background is computer generated. If I find I need a black background for the actual picture, I either use black paper or Carbon pencils.
Thanks Riddler, and you are correct about Mr. Keaton!
Thanks to all for your comments and questions.

LOL! Believe me, if I DIDN'T have to erase, I could use Newsprint...but I've learned my lesson...so to speak. I have 2 favorite reference books that have helped me immensely. The first is Lee Hammond's Big Book of Drawing. I bought this book 2 years ago when I began drawing. The second book is Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil by JD Hillberry. This guy is phenomenal! You can check out some of his stuff on his website: jdhillberry.com/

drawing textures? ooo! in fact, i DO have an amazon wish list, and i shall go run off to put that one on my list. thank you very much for the unsolicited-because-i-wasn't-smart-enough-to-know-to-ask-for-it advice! i currently have on my wish list......hogarth's book on wrinkles and drapery. know that one? is it any good? i have his book on hands, too, but i don't know---they look kinda like cartoon hands, and that's not what i'm after. ok, i've found that texture book and added it to my wish list. i'll pass on the hammond one for the time being---i think i've already got the equivalent. while we're on the subject of books---has anyone got Gary faigin's book on facial expression? that one's helpful.
