Ok, well those of you that know me at all know that my wife and I are both college students. I'm currently in a Military History class with this great professor. He's so knowlegable...worked in intelligence during the cold war..very insightful. Well, today we touched on world war 2...and It came out that he is actually the author of this book that I LOVE. www.amazon.com/gp/product/0807124435/ref=sib_rdr_dp/104-7766142-2323939?%5Fencoding=UTF8&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&no=283155&st=books&n=283155I had no idea he was this famous (to me at least) author! It was really exciting. The research he did for this book was amazing, he spoke with vets on both sides of the conflict...received some amazing one of a kind documents and info...

Allthough not a "student" of, nor entirely well versed on the subject, I have always been facinated by that era and those events surounding the war. Without a doubt "the Greatest Generation" indeed. I do not believe ANY generation to come will ever offer such character. Nor sadly will any likely ever pay the proper due respect or even recognize the sacrifices made. I feel similarly about the men and woman serving as we speak. But then I realize we have far more important things to be concerned about and pay tribute to... such as Ashley Simpson's new Hair do, Brad Pitt's "break up" and most importantly, who designed Paris Hilton's Oscar dress and how much did it cost.... sorry had to rant a sec.
Anyway I adore chatting with my wife's Grandfather who served upon the USS Nevada during Pearl Harbor where he was wounded as a result of an enemy Kamikazi plane.
I come from a family history of civil and Military Service, something I am tremendously proud of.

Wow, i had no idea that you were studying such a fascinating subject.
I too come from a military history.
My grandfather served as a Chindit in Burma and even though his details are sketchy ( he died before i was born) i am really proud of his record. He was wounded in action and had to crawl from the jungle on his own. The war changed him and he never really spoke of it after. I have loads of other relatives who have served but i have very little info on them.
I have an Uncle who served in the Scots Guards and saw a lot of the action in Northern Ireland and was blown up with a grenade during his time there. He carried on and made Sgt Major by the end of his career.
I myself served in Iraq during the latest war in 2003. I am proud to have served my country but hold a lot of animosity to our government for the way we were treated etc but that is a whole different story. I have served in Germany, Poland, Iraq, Kuwait and am currently in the UK. I am a Corporal at the moment but i intend to have left by the end of this year.
Anyway, it is an amazing subject to study and one we should never be allowed to forget.

[shadow=purple,left,300]I am a bit of a history buff. My grandfather served in Korea and he has a box filled with stuff he collected- bullets, stuff from the enemy, a piece of a truck that was set on fire, and a few other odd yet amazing souveniers he found in Korea in the 50s.
I don't really keep up with a lot of US stuff (I mean, I pretty much learned it all by 14), but I have read into a lot of foreign war involvement, really obscure stuff, and foreign history. I like studying African history a lot, especially Apartheid (a gruesome subject). I also love reading up on Russia, Greece and Australia/ New Zealand.[/shadow]

My Father served two tours in Korea (lied about being old enough to join). His first brother (my Uncle) joined him the first go round. His ather (my Grandfather) and both his Brother's served in WWII (One of whome miraculously survived being ran over by an enemy tank). Another Uncle served in Vietnam, and I signed up during Desert Storm (which essentially ended as I was completing Basic Training). For a "happy ending", I end up marrying my former Commanding Officer's Daughter! lol (who is currently a Lt. Col.) Turns out I not only served under her Father, but we spent half our lives within a couple miles of one another. Ya just never know huh?

That would make a cracking Holywood movie Batlaw When you hear things like that it reminds me that we live in such a small world. Are you still serving now Batlaw?
