So, it just came out. Has anyone seen the goriest musical-turn-into-movie in history yet ? From what I've read from critics, its another Burton and Depp hit. Lots of 5/5s and As which is good. I have to catch it soon but I wanna know if anyone has any words about it. Discuss here.

Johnny Depp is actually amazing as Todd/ Barker, and Helena Bonham Carter is fantastic as usual. Of course, the blood got to be too much sometimes (it spurts out like it does in Kill Bill; With Kill Bill, it was supposed to be funny; in Sweeney Todd, the comical blood-spraying takes something away from the macabre story). However, I'd say this is Burton's best movie since Ed Wood, and I hope he gets at least an Oscar nomination for Best Director; he deserves it here.

I think the blood spurt was suppose to be funny in Sleepy Hallow too.. I think thats just Burtons sense of humor..

[shadow=green,left,300] Just watched it, beautiful. Captured everything I wanted to see, I wouldn't recommend to those who are quite faint hearted. Surprisingly a lot of old people were watching it, when I say old I mean grandparent's I was amused by that. It contained lots of singing which I liked, but practically non stop. A lot of men were there, I would hit anyone that says the movie is bad because they sing. It is based on the musical people, don't watch it if your going to whine... I love it though, five stars from me. [/shadow]

Saw it, LOVED IT!!! Johnny Depp owns, he is perhaps the greatest actor of our lifetime right now!!!
And somebody that always goes un-noticed and that deserves just as much praise is Helena Bonham Carter (spelling) she is absolutely amazing as well, Love her!

I loved her in Harry Potter as well as Fight Club and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Like Depp, she is able to adapt into a character seemingly without trouble.

Sweeney Todd was pretty cool. I was surprised that Depp and the whole cast were as talented singers as they were. Of course, there were some parts I didn't care for. The blood. I'm a man. When I see someone get their throat cut, I want there to be blood. That being said, it was completely over the top. That is saying a lot considering I grew up on Mortal Kombat.

I couldn't agree more! Sweeney Todd is a damn masterpiece. The ONLY thing I would change...I would bring Danny Elfman in for the music.

As much as I love Danny Elfman, you wouldn't be able to do that well. The score was written by Steve Sondheim back in the 70's & I don't think they would've been able to do it without Steve.
& I agree, one can never watch too much Monty Python.

Sweeny Todd was beyond fantastic! Tim Burton is an absolute genius! I seen it three times in theatres and can’t wait for it to come out on DVD!
I was really excited that there is thread on this master piece, but there are not that people here! Heck, will anyone else post a comment after me?

I was very disappointed in Sweeney Todd. First of all:
I don't know if it was the theater I saw it in, or if it was the sound editing, but I could not understand the lyrics of any of the songs. And if you can't understand what they're singing, what's the point?
Plus, I just found the gore over the top! It took away from it, for me. Just not very good, IMO

Just not very good, IMO I don't seem to recall any problems understanding the lyrics beyond the accents. It very well could have been your theatre that messed it up. I remember this one time I went to see this awful movie with some friends. While I was watching I noticed that there was something weird up at the top of the screen. It turns out that for about two thirds of the movie, the boom (microphone that is used to record dialogue) was clearly visible. The projectionist had the picture angled too low and as a result, it made a horrible movie even worse. The blood in Sweeney was over the top. I think that is just a Tim Burton thing. I still liked the movie though.

I was lucky enough to get to see it live in June. It was beyond amazing! David Hess & Judy Kaye where fantastic. & David really scares me. I got front row seats, & during the reprise at the end the cast stood right infront of us, he had this crazy mad look in his eyes. It was awesome
